Genetically modified food

Genetically modified foods are foods derived

from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

These techniques are much more

precise than mutagenesis(mutation breeding)

where an organism is exposed to radiation or

chemicals to create a non-specific but stable

change.

MethodGenetic modification

involves the insertion or

deletion of genes. In the

process of cisgenesis,

genes are artificially transferred

between organisms

that could be conventionally

bred.

The method to introduce new genes into

plants requires several important factors

such as specific promoter, codon usage of

the gene and how to deactivate the gene.

Benefits:

Crops

1. Enhanced taste and quality

2. Reduced maturation time

Animals

1. Increased resistance, productivity, hardiness, and feed efficiency

2. Better yields of meat, eggs, and milk

GM Products: Benefits

and Controversies

• Environment

1. "Friendly" bioherbicides and

bioinsecticides

2. Conservation of soil, water, and energy

• Society

1. Increased food security for growing

populations

Controversies

• Safety

1. Potential human health impacts,

including allergens, transfer of antibiotic

resistance markers, unknown effects

• Access and Intellectual Property

1. Domination of world food production by

a few companies

• Labeling

1. Not mandatory in some countries

• Society

1. New advances may be skewed to

interests of rich countries
