What does it look like?

For the second year in a row, World Vision and John Brown University are hosting a competition to design a transitional housing solution to victims of natural disasters. In order to effectively and comfortably house a family of four for a year, the design needs to meet certain criteria. The shelter needs to be over 6’7” tall through most of the interior for comfortable head clearance. It needs to resist damage from seismic activity and wind loads, of up to 75 kph. In order to be effective for large-scale deployment, additional goals must be met: the structure must be inexpensive to mass-produce, falling under $1,500, the materials must be lightweight, under 200 kg, the shape must be effi cient to ship, and the technology must be easy to construct on site.
EXTERIOR
Fabric sheathing with reed coverings for windows gives vernacular aesthetics to the shelter and provides the users with a sense of the traditional dwellings that they are accustomed to. Reed coverings, which can be rolled up and down, control sunlight and ventilation. They allow moderate amount of light and air in to the interior. The light, neutral color of the fabric is a good refl ector of sunlight in tropical Indonesian weather and also gives the shelter a pleasing aesthetic. A hole at the center of the roof alternatively serves the purposes of either rain collection or ventilation.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
INTERIOR
The interior is designed to provide users with a comfortable amount of space to move around and sleep. Head clearance of 6’9” makes the interior neither too confi ned nor too lofty for the users. Two separate spaces give users the option to have separate areas for males and females since some parts of Indonesian domestic cultures are sensitive about separate genders in shared living space.

How does it go together?
USA TO INDONESIA
How does it get there?
The key components of our design for the shelter are its ease of shipping and and assembly. As the shelter would be built in the United States and shipped to
Indonesia, shipping is a major concern. For shipping purposes, the shrunken pods can be turned on their side and stacked like cups, fi tting thirty pods, or fi fteen shelters, into one forty-foot shipping container.

How does it happen?
2 - Rain Collection
Two separate areas not only give users the freedom to manage the interior spaces according to their preferences but also allow for gender-specifi c space division in Indonesian domestic culture.
1 - Adaptability
In the center of the roof of each pod is a hole for rain collection as well as ventilation.
3 - Fabric/Reed SkinThe compound system of fabric overlaid in parts with reeds allows for maximum ventilation, is lightweight and is easily replaceable with local materials.
4 - Metal JointsStronger than normal PVC joints, the joints are universal making it easy for PVC-replacement bamboo to be used. The two custom joints, one for the top and one for the bottom, can easily be mass produced.
5 - FlooringThe Eventdeck fl ooring is perforated for drainage, is durable, can be assembled quickly and contours to the shape of the ground.
6 - PVCStrong, light and durable, the PVC poles make up most of the structure and can be easily replaced with local materials, such as bamboo.
7 - TensionThe tension ropes in the wall and roof systems prevents racking, further strengthening the entire system.
