The Diary of a Young Girl

Anne Frank

She called her diary “Kitty”• Anne wrote in her diary

about all sorts of things that happened to her everyday

• She began the diary just as they escaped into the secret area

• Her first pages described how they got to the secret passage and why they were hiding

Inside the Annex were many rooms

• We had a bathroom or Water Closet - WC

• Margot and I shared a room• There was a sitting room that was

also Mummy’s and Daddy’s bedroom

• The Van Daan’s also had their own bedroom

• We all shared a kitchen, living room and dining room

"Como esconderijo, a casa de trás é ideal; ainda que seja úmida e está toda inclinada, estou segura de que em toda Amsterdã, e talvez em toda Holanda, não há outro esconderijo tão confortável como o que temos instalado aqui."

"I haven't written for a few days, because I wanted first of all to think about my diary. It's an odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done so before, but because it seems to me that neither I - nor for that matter anyone else - will be interested in the unbosomings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl. Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart." (from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, 1952)

"I know I can write. A few of my stories are good, my descriptions of the Secret Annex are humorous, much of my diary is vivid and alive, but... it remains to be seen whether I really have talent."

“Since you’ve never been through a war, Kitty, and since you know very little about life

in hiding, in spite of my letters, let me tell you, just for fun,

what we each want to do first when we’re able to go outside

again…I’d be so overjoyed I wouldn’t know where to begin”

“Leave me alone, let me have at least one night when I don’t

cry myself to sleep with my eyes burning…all day long I hear nothing but what an exasperating child I am”

“I long to ride a bike, dance, whistle, look at the world, feel young and know that I’m free.”

“I…feel like a songbird whose wings have been ripped off and

who keeps hurling itself against the bars of its dark

cage”

“The most you can do is pray for God to perform a miracle and save

at least some of them”

“…but you have to make sacrifices for a good cause…if we can save even one of our friends,

the rest doesn’t matter,”

The song that Anne Frank wrote

Give me faith and hope and courage Let me love my fellow man Working, striving every day to do

the best I can!

Let me see a world of beauty Let me dream of worldwide peace

with confidence and vision, Let me pray for wars to cease!

"In spite of everything," said she, "people's hearts are good."

Let me strive to keep alive her dream of brotherhood.

May we live to build the world that Anne Frank had in mind.

A world of peace and harmony and love for all mankind!

Anne Frank, age twelve, at her school desk. Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1941.
