Note: Dialogue occurs at many levels and with many different purposes. A keyindicator in determining what kind of interaction is taking place is the level of interestin the other. When dialoguing, parties may be more interested in themselves than inthe others, and try to impose their view and their opinions; this typically results indebates. Alternatively, parties may not carry a particular interest for themselves intothe exchange, and instead may wish to help a third party better discern their ownviews; this may take the shape of appreciative inquiry. When both parties bring thesame degree of interest for themselves as for the other (that is, when they want tosatisfy their needs while helping satisfy those of other people), dialogue takes on aproblem-solving dynamic.
