Introduction
SPIE is a not-for-profit professional society for optics and photonics
technology, founded in 1955. It organizes technical conferences, trade
exhibitions, and continuing education programs for researchers and
developers in the light-based fields of physics, including: optics,
photonics, and imaging engineering. On July 1, 1955 SPIE was founded as
the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers in California to
specialize in the application of photographic instrumentation. In 1964 the
society changed its name to the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation
Engineers. In 1977 SPIE moved its headquarters to Bellingham,
Washington, and in 1981, to reflect a changing membership, the Society
began doing business as (DBA) SPIE—The International Society for
Optical Engineering. In 2007, the society ended its DBA, and is referred to
simply as "SPIE".
SPIE Student Chapter CSIO Chandigarh
Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), a constituent unit of
Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), is a premier national
laboratory dedicated to research, design and development of scientific
and industrial instruments. It is a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional
apex industrial research & development organisation in the country to
stimulate growth of Instrument Industry in India covering wide range and
applications. CSIO is a multi-disciplinary organization having well
equipped laboratories manned by highly qualified and well trained staff
with infrastructural facilities in the areas of Agrionics; Medical
Instrumentation and Prosthetic Devices; Optics based Instrumentation;
Fiber/Laser Optics based Sensors & Instrumentation; Analytical
Instrumentation; Advanced Materials based Transducers etc.
SPIE Student Chapter CSIO Chandigarh came into existence in February,
2016 with 34 members. It promotes Science among researchers,
academicians and students.
On Campus Activities:
We organised Photonics lab visits for undergraduate students of Indo
Swiss Training Centre, Chandigarh and imparted knowledge of different
optics equipment including Electric Arc Fusion Splicer, Optical Spectrum
Analyser, Light Runner, Interrogator, Magnetron Sputtering Unit etc.
We have also organise SPIE awareness program at our campus for the
undergraduate students various colleges near Chandigarh region and

knowledge about our Chapter and ongoing activities were imparted to
them. We have Fiber Bragg Grating writing system at our lab. The
fundamental processes involved in creating grating in the core region of
the fiber were illustrated and the transmission spectra of the same has
been shown.

We have also demonstrated about practical aspects and applications of
optics to school children. Experiments related to reflection, refraction,
dispersion and diffraction were demonstrated. LASER beam pattern of
HeNe LASER was shown to them.
We have organised seminars for topics related to optics and photonics for
researchers and members of SPIE at our campus.
Outreach activities:
During one year, various outreach activities were carried out to promote
active interactions among research scholars of our institute and other
nearby R&D organisations like IISER Mohali, INST Mohali and Panjab
University.
We have visited Physics Department in IISER Mohali and interacted with
faculty and students of department. We came across various R&D
activities going in their department. We also presented our research
activities to researchers of their department.

Our outreach activities also comprise a two-day interactive lecture series
on light for high school students of Government Model School, Sector-30,
Chandigarh and a workshop for practical demonstration of different
phenomenon of light. This activity was very interesting and successful
which appeared from huge presence of students and their active
participation in Quiz competition conducted at the end of the session.

A lecture session on fundamentals and applications of Optics was
organised for students of Indo Swiss Training Centre, Chandigarh in
information related to light, its applications and future prospects in this
field were provided. Students enjoyed the session, they enquired about
job opportunities and current scenario of Optical technology in Indian
market.
During CRIKC Nanoscience Conclave held at Institute of Nano Science and
Technology (INST), Mohali. Our Chapter President delivered a poster
presentation on "Fiber Technologies and their Applications". He put light
on SPIE student chapter activities.
We have attended the Chandigarh Science Congress Conference held at
Panjab University, Chandigarh. The faculty advisor of our chapter Dr.
Umesh Kumar Tiwari delivered lecture on "Fiber Grating Sensors and their
applications".
