In 2018 Three Counties Agricultural Society celebrated its 60th year on the permanent site at Malvern, and as Patron of Royal Three Counties Show I was pleased to attend a reception to recognize the anniversary and meet volunteers, sponsors and award winners.

It was interesting to see historic memorabilia of how the showground has evolved during the 60 years, starting out as an empty eld without infrastructure or roads into what can be seen today. Also revealed were plans for future development and a new multi-use building. The expectation of good facilities increases with time and the progressive vision for the Showground and the enthusiasm of those involved was plain to see. I look forward to following progress as future plans for the Showground evolve.

The dedication of its volunteers is a valued part of the Society and I was pleased to present Honorary Life Governorships to those retiring from Council this year, Joanna Beswick, Judy Proger and Richard Bradstock. I wish you all a successful 2019 for Royal Three Counties Show and Three Counties Agricultural Society.

Welcome to Three Counties Agricultural Society Review of 2018

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron, Royal Three Counties Show visit to Three Counties Showground December 2018

Firstly, a huge and warm welcome to the 2018 Annual Review. A remarkable year for us on so many levels, not least as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Three Counties Agricultural Society’s permanent site here at Malvern; a visit by HRH The Princess Royal, who attended a traditional Afternoon Tea to mark the occasion, being the true ‘icing on the cake’. It was a privilege and honour to welcome Her Royal Highness and invite her to cut the beautiful celebration cake.

Each of our signature annual events welcomed bumper crowds enjoying the memorable weather of 2018 and the Farming Conference again proved to be a resounding success.

No report would be complete without extending a humble thank you to the army of officials, volunteers, trustees, staff and, of course, the supporting public who make our Society so successful; particularly our hardworking 2018 President, Lt. Col. Patrick Holcroft LVO OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, and his wife Annie.

Here’s to the next 60 years!

Clive C Roads FLAA Chairman of Council

It’s a great pleasure to once again be able to report fantastic results for the Society for 2018, bucking what was forecast to be a difficult year thanks to the delivery of three successful major events.

This success has enabled the Society to continue in the delivery of its charitable objectives and facility improvement programme, with notable progress achieved on developments across the Showground. May witnessed planning permission being granted for forty quality lodges in our adjacent woodland, and detailed plans are now complete for the development of a multipurpose space in the area between the present Avon and Wye event halls.

In early December, we were delighted to present our vision for the future to HRH The Princess Royal during her visit.

Throughout 2019, our focus lies in continuing to deliver high-quality events and venue hire facilities in as cost-effective a way as possible, enabling us to continue our charitable work for the benefit of the community. I’m confident that 2019 is set to be another hugely successful year for the Society.

Embarking on the summer season with new Head of Shows, Diana Walton, at the helm, RHS Malvern 2018 greeted an impressive 100,000 visitors through the gates; our most successful year to date.Helped in no small part by glorious weather and a fantastic line-up of experts from the worlds of gardening and food, crowds gathered to glean top tips from the likes of Alan Titchmarsh, John Torode, Valentine Warner, Raymond Blanc and BBC Gardeners’ World favourites Carol Klein, Joe Swift and Alys Fowler. Each year, RHS Malvern raises the bar for design and horticultural talent, with 2018 proving to be no exception. Ruth Gwynn and Alan Williams were awarded the Best Show Garden accolade for 'The Perfumer’s Garden', with Elaine Portch clinching the top gong for our brand-new category designed to inspire creativity in small spaces, Best Green Living Spaces, for her design 'Outside Number 39'.Gardening enthusiasts were spoilt for choice with 70 handpicked specialist nurseries in the Floral Marquee and a host of new plant varieties on display, with Andy’s Airplants taking home The Lyn Downes Award for Best Floral Marquee Exhibit this year. The brand-new Great Pavilion of Art and Flowers also proved to be a must-visit, housing spectacular floral displays cascading from miniature Morgan cars, suspended above the floral theatre.

Once again, budding young gardeners were invited to bring their garden designs to life under the theme of ‘Great Britain’. Twelve schools took part in this unique area of the Festival set alongside a homage to Blue Peter in honour of its 60th year on television, with the Three Counties Home Educators taking home the top award for Best School Garden for their wonderful 'Beatrix Potter Garden'.The real jewel in the crown of the Festival for crowds was the 'Work of Heart Garden', designed by widow Clare Young in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, which cared for Clare’s late husband Ken. This first-ever knitted Show Garden installation featured a hospice bedroom overgrown with knitted plants including lavender, rosemary and colourful sunflowers, with funds raised exceeding £25,000 to date. Proudly organised in partnership with The Royal Horticultural Society, RHS Malvern Spring Festival has continued to go from strength to strength, with 2018 hailed as its best-ever year

With Worcestershire in the hotseat as host county this year, celebrations commenced with the launch of the Royal Three Counties Show at Worcester Cathedral on 30th May, with prized livestock from Worcestershire making their way inside the Cathedral, along with representatives from the county, for a service and reception to celebrate rural life.We were excited to welcome JCB Paint as headline partner for the first year.As ever, a strong host county theme was evident throughout the show’s many events and attractions. Visitors were treated to a colourful medieval re-enactment camp focused on Worcestershire’s history, with a veritable selection of the county’s best music, art, food and drink on offer. This year’s show wasn’t without its famous faces, either, with several cast members from BBC’s The Archers proving hugely popular in the Wellington Boot Theatre with their tales from Ambridge. Local farmer and TV presenter Adam Henson returned as Show Ambassador, entertaining the crowds with his knowledge and passion for farming and rare breeds alongside his sister Libby Henson.Visitors were treated to an outstanding display of some of the finest cattle, sheep and pigs from across the UK, including national shows for a number of breeds. Fittingly, it was stock from two of these national shows which headed the lines in the Cattle and Sheep Interbreed Competitions, with a British Blonde heifer from David and Sue Knight’s Bristol-based Doncombe herd clinching the Cattle Interbreed Category.

Top ticket in the sheep section went to a Southdown ram from Jonathan Long and family, based in Bishop’s Frome, Herefordshire, whilst the overall Champion of Champions went to Rare and Minority Breeds Show Champion of Champions British Saddleback Gilt, Prestcombe Belle 8, from Alice Newth, Somerset.Over in the Equine Village, the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship Qualifier was won by the Riding Pony Breeding Section Champion, Crafton Blithe Spirit, from Mr M Buckley, Marcosie Stud and produced by Stanley Grange Show Team.At the heart of the action was the show’s exciting Main Arena, with crowds treated to thrilling spectacles including Shetland Pony Grand National Races, the awe-inspiring Grand Parade of Livestock and the ever-impressive Red Devils Parachute Display Team. We were delighted to welcome Westons Cider Mill back as headline partner. In 2018 we saw an exciting, fresh new look and layout for our ever-popular Malvern Autumn Show as the RHS Flower Show found a new home in the heart of our brand-new Gardening Village with 53 award-winning nurseries proudly on display.

It was awards a-plenty across the show’s many varied exhibits. For the first time ever, a nursery from the Orchard Pavilion, R V Roger Ltd from Pickering, Yorkshire, was awarded the coveted RHS Best Exhibit in the RHS Flower Show title, whilst over in the Floral Fiesta growers were awarded five medals for their beautiful displays. Mentored by celebrity florist Jonathan Moseley, the Fiesta area aimed to provide a platform to demonstrate the beauty and diversity of flowers that can be grown here in the UK. Here, show visitors were also treated to inspiring demonstrations, including a woodland wedding showcase by former Royal florist, Sarah Champier.

Floral Art wasn’t without its stars either, with Mrs Margaret Thomas awarded Best in Show and first-time exhibitor Mrs Alexandra Bolton clinching the gong for Reserve Best in Show and Best Use of Colour. Best Use of Foliage went to Mrs Barbara Pullen.

This year’s CANNA UK National Giant Vegetables Championship proved to be as popular as ever, witnessing a staggering six world records across 33 categories and almost 600 entries in total. Even the national press were keen to see the fruits of our entrants’ labours, with BBC Breakfast interviewing growers David Thomas and Paul Rochester live on Sunday morning.

A host of famous faces added to this year’s marvel, with Valentine Warner and Mark Diacono making a welcome comeback headlining the Autumn Potager Kitchen and horticultural experts Joe Swift, Carol Klein and Alys Fowler sharing their gardening know-how in the Autumn Potager Theatre. Broadcasting legend Gyles Brandreth stole the show with ‘Just a Minute – I’m in the Garden’ and his ‘Tales from the Wardrobe’, whilst former BBC Blue Peter presenter and dog lover, Peter Purves, hosted our Top Dogs Arena; a particularly popular new addition.

A fun-filled family event, giving youngsters a hands-on insight into farming life.

It was a fantastic day of farmyard fun once again at this year’s CountryTastic, with everyone’s favourite farmer and BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson taking the helm for a baa-mazing sheep themed line-up of demonstrations, exhibits and entertainment.

Youngsters were given the chance to quiz the experts on all things sheep as Adam Henson and other top farmers from across the county shared their farming wisdom in the Ask the Farmer Classroom. The Museum of Carpet gave children the chance to get hands-on with wool spinning, whilst the Sheep Show gave an entertaining and highly informative display of breeds from across the world.

Sheep weren’t the only stars of the show, as the British Pig Association Junior Club Pig Agility demonstrations proved just how majestic these farmyard animals can be and the ever-popular Wag and Bone Ring played home to the incredibly talented Mid-Western Gundog Display team. There was even the chance to ride unicorns!

NATIONAL YOUNG STARS 21-22 August 2018

5 April 2018

Renowned as a national platform for agriculture’s next generation, this year’s National Young Stars event saw around 150 young agricultural enthusiasts from across the UK descend on the Three Counties Showground for two days of exciting competition in various cattle, sheep, pig and butchery sections.

Hugely supported by headline sponsors Allflex UK, youngsters went head to head in competitions including stock judging, show preparation, ring craft, public speaking, marketing and publicity and industry knowledge, with two new sections making a celebrated entrance this year: the untrimmed sheep section and dual purpose/untrimmed cattle section.

Commenting on the event, Chairman Neil Lloyd said: “Yet again the standard of youngsters competing was mind-blowing to see. The work these teams put in over the two days, not to mention in the run-up to the event, is to be commended and they’re all a credit to their sponsors, family and the industry.”

Malvern Caravan Show proved to be a fun-filled event for industry insiders and caravan enthusiasts alike in 2018, rounding off our outdoor show season wonderfully.Working jointly with Warners Shows, experts in motorhome and caravan shows, visitors new and old descended on the Showground to enjoy a variety of fabulous entertainment over the course of three days, including evenings of live music and a popular Macmillan coffee morning. The trade show also proved to be a hit, giving traders the opportunity to sell their finest new and used models and accessories.

The Three Counties Championship Dog Show, a Crufts Qualifier, once again proved its popularity as one of the most highly-entered Championship Shows in the UK, with this year’s event witnessing 7,133 entries from throughout the UK testing their mettle across a range of categories. With over 9,000 visitors eagerly descending on the showground to see their favourite canine breeds in action, Best in Show was awarded to the American Imported Champion American Cocker, Am Ch Sh Ch Ir Ch Silhouette Troubling Nasailleen, who won a strong Gundog group as judged for the first time by Doreen Smillie-Gray.

Planning ahead for the future of food and farming.

Once again, the annual Three Counties Farming Conference welcomed lively debate and expert insight on issues of great importance to the agriculture industry here in the UK; the chaos of Brexit and the rise of veganism in Britain dominating proceedings at this year’s event.

With the UK’s most senior farm leaders gathering at the showground to discuss and tackle imminent threats facing the region’s producers and growers, the afternoon kicked off with thought provoking talks from Knight Frank, The Farming Community Network, the NFU and The Business Barn; Nuffield Scholars Richard Counsell and Geraint Powell then taking the helm to challenge views from delegates into the evening.

The evening debate, expertly chaired by BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson, saw NFU President Minette Batters, MP and Chair of the EFRA Select Committee Neil Parish and the Soil Association’s Farming Head Liz Bowles answer questions in front of a lively audience of 400 farmers.

NFU boss Minette Batters gave a passionate speech about British farming and challenged Neil Parish to “corral” the Government in support of British agriculture, leading Mr Parish to agree that he would “redouble” his efforts; adding that clarity on Brexit negotiations was in short supply.

THREE COUNTIES AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY BURSARY In memory of Joe Henson MBEThe Three Counties Agricultural Society Bursary, in honour of the late Joe Henson MBE, is a bursary established to support and encourage students enrolling in further education courses related to agricultural industries. This year, we were delighted to support an additional four students, bringing our current total to eight. We’re very proud to have bursary awardees studying at all of the major land-based universities and colleges in and around our region.

EDUCATION AT THREE COUNTIES

Adam and the late Joe Henson at The Cotswold Farm Park

As ever, the education of the future generations of farming and outdoor industry was of paramount importance to the Three Counties Agriculture Society’s aims for 2018’s shows and events. Kick-starting the year in January was the inaugural Three Counties Careers Fair, where over 500 young people were welcomed to the showground to discover more about careers awaiting them in the agricultural industry. Exhibitors from a wide range of areas provided interactive activities, advice and career guidance to those in attendance, with tractors and remote-controlled stump-grinder demonstrations giving an enthralling visual spectacle for visitors to enjoy.CountryTastic, held in April, was once again based around experiential learning for youngsters, with exhibits and activities designed to give children a realistic idea of where food, in particular meat, comes from.Education didn’t stop at farming’s door, with RHS Malvern Spring Festival’s popular School Garden Challenge encouraging school children to use their imaginations to envisage and create stunning garden designs. This year, 14 different schools produced 12 spectacular gardens around the theme of Great Britain, with the winning garden telling the story of Beatrix Potter’s work. The success of ‘Schools Go Free Friday’ at the Royal Three Counties Show in June has grown from strength to strength, with over 2,500 school children attending this year.

Malvern Autumn Show’s education focus proved to be a hit with visitors during the sunny September weather, with Worcester University and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust returning to offer valuable insect-focussed insight. We were proud to support a Nuffield Scholar once again, this year working with Kate Mayne who is investigating the best approaches for agri-environmental success across the world. Kate’s work considers how and when collaboration with environmental organisations is most effective and aims to discover what the impacts and challenges are to farmers and rural communities.

VENUE HIRE

11

A host of exciting events, new and returning, have contributed to a hugely successful year for the Three Counties’ Venue Hire division, bolstered by our continued programme of facility improvements and hardworking ground staff.Brand-new to the showground in 2018 was the International Fellowship of Rotarians event, which has already booked its next local rally with us in 2020, as well as the Great Shires Game Fair; an exciting new event for 2018, which proved to be very popular with visitors. We were incredibly pleased to host Busfest, the largest VW Transporter show in the world, which returned to celebrate its 25th anniversary. We very much look forward to welcoming them back in September 2019!Across the summer, the Equine Rings played host to numerous Horse Shows, including the Arab Horse Society, National Pony Society and Shetland Breed Show, all benefiting from our new Duralok Fencing. The National Pony Society liked the Showground’s equine facilities so much that it has moved its Spring event here in late April 2019; a real testament to the quality of our equine offering.

In order to maintain our excellent venue hire reputation, our Estate Team works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that our facilities remain in top condition. This winter saw the installation of a brand-new security fence by the North Pay Gate, as well as the replacement of the Ledbury Ring. The Shearing Shed has benefited from a complete overhaul, with new lighting, changes to the pen layout and a fresh lick of paint throughout, whilst the permanent stables have been completely refurbished and repainted. The showground’s main water supply will also be replaced this winter, along with further additions to the CCTV system for improved security.

“An excellent venue. As an event organiser, I appreciate the flexibility of the grounds and buildings available, plus the wide range of equipment and resources available to hire. The staff are knowledgeable and efficient and, just as important, a pleasure to work with and always happy to help.” Mark Wakeland, Show Manager, National Working & Pastoral Breeds Society Championship Dog Show

In 2018, the Society experienced another very good year. This was due to a variety of factors: the success of our shows, the continued hard work of our showground team and Council, and a selection of exciting new projects in the pipeline, all culminating in an accomplished and gratifying outcome to the year.

Over one million visitors attended the showground, helped in no small part by the wonderful weather we enjoyed during the summer months. New Head of Shows Diana Walton and her team produced two innovative and creative layouts for the RHS Malvern Spring Festival and the Malvern Autumn Show, both of which were extremely well received, and I’m pleased to announce that all financial targets for the year were achieved; setting the bar high for 2019.

The Society produced a consolidated turnover of £5.89m and a net surplus of £217k before gains on investments. EBITDA, the preferred reporting format, was £542k, again a very respectable result.

We were also delighted to receive planning permission to develop 40 lodges in Langdale Wood, in time providing new income to help protect the longevity of the Society.

This year has also been one of change, with our hardware, software and cyber security systems all receiving vital upgrades. Other projects have included the installation of further CCTV, ticketing and Wi-Fi systems to improve our visitors’ experience.

I would like to congratulate and thank our hard-working Dog Show Committee for their expertise and commitment in bringing the Three Counties Championship Dog Show to an outstanding level, as well as our Equine Committee for generating such positive feedback regarding our equine facilities.

My thanks must also extend to all of our staff and volunteers who, without reservation, put their valuable time and expertise into making the Society the success it is today. Ken Nottage Chief Executive, Three Counties Agricultural Society
