HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
The Anvil, Issue 279 is the monthly newsletter of
the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The
International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms
and phrases from Star Trek are owned by
Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of
Paramount Communications and all rights are
reserved.

Greeting from your Captain, It is Christmas Time. This is a fun time because I like to see all the Christmas Movies that are on. I fill up my DVR with a lot of the movies on ABC Family and Lifetime. Christmas movies are about the only chick flicks I like. Also I love to watch the cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Jim Carrey movie is okay but I still like the cartoon better. Check out the Name the Santa later in the Anvil for some of my favorite Santa’s. . Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those
trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which
means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine
ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.
Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out

Looking for a Director for Star Trek 3
Robert Orci has step down from directing Star Trek 3. The rumors that Paramount asked him to step down
because of the script Orci says is wrong. Fans have set up a Facebook page and a hashtag following on twitter
with #bringinRiker. Riker being Jonathan Frakes who is willing but says that it is slim chance they will let him.
Other people Paramount is considering is Edgar White (Shaun of the Dead) Joe Cornish who was considered
before Orci was announced.

35th anniversary for Star Trek The Motion Picture
Star Trek the Motion Picture is 35 years old this year. The movie grew out of abandon Star Trek Phase 2 TV
project. It was directed by Robert Wise who was known for The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Andromeda
Strain. The movie has both its fans and detractors. It is considered what brought Star Trek back and gave the
fans something to look forward too.

Zoe Saldana Gives Birth
Zoe Saldana gave birth to twin boys on December 8th. Zoe is married to Marc Perego an artist. Zoe Saldana is
known in the Star Trek universe as the New Uhura. Congratulations from the crew of the Hephaestus.
Christmas Gifts The Trek News feeds again were filled with many
things to buy for Christmas. The only thing that stuck out to me was getting a Student I.D. for Starfleet Academy from Cafepress. Other than that there was not much else I couldn’t live with out. If you are looking for something to suggest to
friends then you might want to point them to these sites. (www.startrek.com, www.trekmovie.com, www.trektoday.com,etc). I am sure there is something there that you might
want or need from these interesting items. Again, I do not want the Wesley Crusher Uniform Hoodie! (Did I miss something? You have an interesting news item from Star Trek? Then send me your suggestions and

Star Trek: The New Adventures: The Starlight Before Christmas
By: Donald Arnold
Bill and Stephanie were decorating their quarters for
Christmas. The Enterprise J was in route to Earth, but not
quickly. Spock had warned Bill not to hurry back for any
reason. The Ambassador was acting strangely lately. He
seemed worried constantly. He even turned down
Christmas dinner a few days early so everyone could go
home for Christmas. Ambassador Spock kept his distance
for a reason. All was not right within the Federation. Bill
didn’t think of it much. He and his wife hummed
Christmas carols and working quickly. They had both been
the reason the ship was festive for almost every holiday.
Oftentimes, for Christmas, Bill even got it to snow, thanks
to the staff. He thought about if he’d do that this year. The
klaxon sounded, though. t
Bill and Stephanie got to the bridge and something was
going on at the planet Neptune. Bill tried to sense
something, anything. He couldn’t figure out what was
going on but when they arrived, a great shadow had fallen
over one area. There was no sign of what it was except that
it vanished ten minutes after the Enterprise J got there.
Bill, Stephanie, Spock, Data, and Jack beamed down.
There were stone arms reaching out of the ground, statues
everywhere, and a blue box in the middle. Bill knew this
had The Doctor written all over it but he couldn’t
remember what the statues were. The Doctor came out. He
had regenerated again. He looked… older. There was a
young woman with him that he kept calling Clara. Bill
questioned, “Doctor, did you do this?” The Doctor looked
at him as if he had lost it and responded, “I make an effort
not to cause Weeping Angels…” He said nothing further
as he fired some strange energy from his sonic screwdriver
and barely missed Data’s head. Bill turned to see one of
the statues had been destroyed. The crew got in a grouping
where no one wasn’t looking at a statue. Bill said, “I
remember these now, Doc! I must have forgotten them
after that little event with the transfusion. Which reminds
me, does that need to be redone now that you’ve
regenerated?” This new Doctor seemed concerned more
about keeping Clara in the TARDIS than anything. He
answered, “You don’t have to that I know of. I’m glad you
remember the Weeping Angels but remembering and
destroying are two different things. I was here following a
legend that said a mysterious and allusive Time Lord lived
here. Evidence has been found of his existence but nothing
that was strong enough to be scientific. He lives just over
this clearing but we can’t get there without the Angels
taking the phone box.” Bill asked, “Can the Enterprise
destroy them? Does the TARDIS still have those shields I
installed?” The Doctor said ‘yes’ to both questions. They
group ran into the TARDIS and locked the door. It shook
as a bright red light destroyed the Weeping Angels. Bill,
The Doctor, and Company continued on. A small village
smelling of baked goods lay over the hill and singing came
from it. The Doctor climbed up on the roof and Bill and
the others turned invisible and went through the front door.
They all met in the center of a room where they were met
by a large man in a red suit to which The Doctor said,
“Saint Nick. So the legends of Gallifrey are true. A time
lord alive longer than me. No man has ever caught him,
despite trying…” Bill and the others talked but they
headed back as the Doctor obsessed over Saint Nick, a
Time Lord who was very, very famous on Gallifrey.
Christmas on the ship and Christmas at home were great
for Bill. However, after all was over, he was called back to
Vulcan ASAP by Ambassador Spock. The truth was about
to be revealed…
TO BE CONTINUED…

Gotham (Fox – Monday 7PM central) By MarkAdam Miller
RATING: AAAaa
(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article) tttt
If you are a big Batman fan then this might not be the show for you. Bruce Wayne is in the program but as a 12 year old boy. This is about Commissioner Gordon when he was a detective. Also we are seeing several of the know villains before they were made infamous (Penguin, Riddler, and Catwomen.)
Ben McKenzie is playing James Gordon. He is known for THE O.C. Donal Logue is playing the Detective Harvey Bullock. Donal Logue is better known for his character Lee Toric in Sons of Anarchy and Sean Finnerty in Grounded for Life. A well know actress Jada Pinkett Smith is playing Fish Mooney. Jada is better know for the character Christina Hawthorne in Hawthorne, Carla Purty in the Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy and being the wife of Will Smith.
The program is good but is moving slow. They are doing set up for several of the characters. The focus is mostly around Gordon, Bullock, Mooney and Penguin. The premise is that Gotham is slowly decaying and the only thing stopping it is the Wayne Foundation. Now that the Wayne’s have been killed there is nothing stopping the war that is coming between the crime Bosses Falcone and Maroni. Most of the cops are on the take to Falcone so they are turning the other way on most of the crime.
The people they have chosen are really some good actors to play the different people we know and love from the comic. I really like seeing David Zayas (Angel Batista from Dexter) playing the Mob Boss Maroni. He does a good job as a Mob Boss. Camren Bicondova is doing a good job as Catwomen/Selina Kyle. The only problem is that she seems a little old to be a love interest of Batman later on in the Batman story.
It has a great beginning and I think if they stay on the Gordon/Bullock track and don’t veer off on the Batman line then they will have a really good show.
Forever (ABC -Tueday 9PM central) By MarkAdam Miller
RATING: AAAAA
(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)
If you are watching Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. then you need to stay tuned after the show and watch Forever.
This is a program that has a man who doesn’t die. Every time he is killed he comes back to life in the nearest
body of water. He has been alive for over 200 years. The man is named Henry Morgan and is played by Ioan
Gruffudd. Ioan Gruffudd is better known for Reed Richard/Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four Movie. Judd
Hirsch is also in the program playing his friend Abe. (SPOILER ALERT) Abe is actually a child that Henry
saved in WWII and raised as his son. It is an interesting contrast to see an older man looking to a man that looks
to be younger than him. Alana De La Garza is playing police detective Jo Martinez who is the one helping
Henry solve the murder cases.
THE ANVIL NCC-2004
USS HEPHAESTUS 9 ALWAYS ONWARD
This has been a good program tying Henry’s past with what is going on in the here and now. Because of his
age he is looking at things from a different perspective that gives insight into what is happening. He is also
trying to understand why he doesn’t die and that is why he became a medical examiner to study death. I really
like this program and gives a good twist on the old formula for cop shows.
