Chapter 1

Toolbars

Bydefault,PhotoshopgivesyouasetoftoolsontheleftcalledtheToolbarorthe“Tools.”Eachgroupoftoolsisseparatedbyadivider.Thefirstsetoftoolsiscommonlyusedforselectionsandmakingselections.Thesecondgroupisusedforimageorphotoediting.Thethirdgroupisthevectorbasedtoolsusedtocreateandeditvectorobjects.ThelastgroupisthegeneralPhotoshopmovementandutilitytools.

Option Bar

Theoptionbaristhearealocatedrightbeneaththemenubar.Thisbarprovidesdifferentoptionsbasedonwhattoolisselected.

Elliptical Marquee Tool

TheEllipticalMarqueeToolmakesanellipticalselection.Byselectingspecificareas,youcaneditandapplyeffectsandfilterstoportionsofyourimagewhileleavingtheunselectedareasuntouched.

Undoing Actions in Photoshop

InPhotoshop,theUndocommand(Ctrl+ZonPC,Command+ZonMac)onlyreversesonestep.ThisisapracticalitybecausePhotoshopfilescanbeverylarge,andmaintainingmultiple

Tip:TheHistorypanelcanonlyviewupto20stepspriortothecurrentstatebydefault.

Tip:Youcanusevariousmethodstozoominandout.Forexample,whentheZoomtoolisselected,youcanselecttheZoomInorZoomOutmodeontheoptionsbar.YoucanchooseView>ZoomInorView>ZoomOut.Or,youcantypeanewpercentageinthestatusbarandpressEnterorReturn.

Swatch Panel

TheSwatchPanelcontainsspecificcolorsforyoutochoosefrom.Bydefaultyougetastandardsetofcolors,butnewswatchescanbeaddedbyclickingtheNewSwatchbutton.

Layers Panel

TheLayersPanellistsallthelayersinanimage,displayingthelayernamesandthumbnailsofthecontentoneachlayer.YoucanusetheLayerspaneltohide,view,reposition,delete,rename,andmergelayers.Thelayerthumbnailsareautomaticallyupdatedasyoueditthelayers.

Tip:InordertousetheAdobeCameraRawfeature,youmustmakesurethatyourcamerahascapabilitytoshootinthisparticularRawfileformat.RawformatsincludefileextensionsCRWandDNG.

Camera Raw

Acamera rawfilecontainsunprocessedpicturedatafromadigitalcamera’simagesensor.Manydigitalcamerascansaveimagesincamerarawformat.Theadvantageofcamerarawfilesisthattheyletthephotographer—ratherthanthecamera—interprettheimagedataandmakeadjustmentsandconversions.Becausethecameradoesn’tdoanyimageprocessingwhenyoushootacamerarawphoto,youcanuseAdobeCameraRawtosetthewhitebalance,tonalrange,contrast,colorsaturation,andsharpening.

Ruler Tool

UsingPhotoshop’sRulerTool,youcandrawalineparalleltothetopofyourimagetohavePhotoshopstraightenyourimageforyou.

Color Replacement Tool

UsetheColorReplacementtooltopaintoveronecolorwithanother.WhenyoustartpaintingwiththeColorReplacementtool,itanalyzesthefirstpixelsyoupaintover.Becauseitthenonlyreplacespixelsofsimilarcolor,youdon’thavetobeterriblypreciseasyoupaint.Youcanselectsettingsthatdeterminewhetherthetoolpaintsovercontiguousordiscontiguouspixels,andhowmuchcolordifferencethetoolaccepts.

Tip:TheHealingBrushtoolworkssimilarlytotheSpotHealingBrushtool,exceptthatitrequiresyoutosamplesourcepixelsbeforeretouchingthearea.

Sponge Tool

TheSpongeToolletsyouchangethesaturationofacolor.TheSpongeToolisusefulformakingsubtlesaturationchangestospecificareasofanimage.

Clone Stamp Tool

TheCloneStamptoolusespixelsfromoneareaofanimagetoreplacethepixelsinanotherpartoftheimage.Usingthistool,youcannotonlyremoveunwantedobjectsfromyourimages,butyoucanalsofillinmissingareasinphotographsyouscanfromdamagedoriginals.

Spot Healing Brush

TheSpotHealingBrushtoolquicklyremovesblemishesandotherimperfectionsfromphotos.Itpaintswithsampledpixelsfromanimageorpatternandmatchesthetexture,lighting,transparency,andshadingofthesampledpixelstothepixelsbeinghealed.UnliketheCloneStamptool,theSpotHealingBrushdoesn’trequireyoutospecifyasamplespot.Itautomaticallysamplesfromaroundtheretouchedarea.

Content Aware Fill

Content-awaretoolstakeblendingafewstepsfurther:Photoshopfillsaselectionwithpixelsthatmatchthesurroundings.UsingthePatchtoolinContent-Awaremodeisn’tlikecloning,becauseyouaren’tcopyingpartoftheimagetoanotherpart.Really,it’smorelikemagic.Youcanfillanyselectionwithcontentsimilartothecontentaroundit,asiftheobjectyouselectedneverexisted.

Unsharp Mask Filter

TheUnsharpMaskFilteradjuststhecontrastoftheedgedetailandcreatestheillusionofamorefocusedimage.
