9IamspeakingthetruthinChrist—Iamnotlying;myconscience2

bearsmewitnessintheHolySpirit— thatIhavegreatsorrow3

andunceasinganguishinmyheart. ForIcouldwishthatImyselfwereaccursedandcutofffromChristforthesakeofmybrothers,

4mykinsmenaccordingtotheflesh. TheyareIsraelites,andtothembelongtheadoption,theglory,thecovenants,thegivingof

5the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong thepatriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is theChrist,whoisGodoverall,blessedforever.Amen.

6ButitisnotasthoughthewordofGodhasfailed.Fornotallwho7are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are

childrenofAbrahambecausetheyarehisoffspring,but“Through8

Isaacshallyouroffspringbenamed.” ThismeansthatitisnotthechildrenofthefleshwhoarethechildrenofGod,butthechildren

9of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what thepromisesaid:“AboutthistimenextyearIwillreturn,andSarah

10shallhaveason.” Andnotonlyso,butalsowhenRebekahhad

11conceivedchildrenbyoneman,our forefather Isaac, thoughthey were not yet born and had done nothing either good orbad—inorderthatGod'spurposeofelectionmightcontinue,not

12becauseofworksbutbecauseofhimwhocalls— shewastold,

13“Theolderwillservetheyounger.” Asitiswritten,“JacobIloved,butEsauIhated.”

14Whatshallwesaythen?IsthereinjusticeonGod'spart?Byno15means! ForhesaystoMoses,“IwillhavemercyonwhomIhave

16mercy,andIwillhavecompassiononwhomIhavecompassion.”Sothenitdependsnotonhumanwillorexertion,butonGod,who

17has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this verypurposeIhaveraisedyouup,thatImightshowmypowerinyou,

18andthatmynamemightbeproclaimedinalltheearth.” Sothenhehasmercyonwhomeverhewills,andhehardenswhomeverhewills.

19Youwillsaytomethen,“Whydoeshestillfindfault?Forwho

20canresisthiswill?” Butwhoareyou,Oman,toanswerbacktoGod?Willwhatismoldedsaytoitsmolder,“Whyhaveyoumade

21melikethis?” Hasthepotternorightovertheclay,tomakeoutofthesamelumponevesselforhonorableuseandanotherfor

22dishonorableuse? WhatifGod,desiringtoshowhiswrathandto make known his power, has endured with much patience

23vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to makeknowntherichesofhisgloryforvesselsofmercy,whichhehas

24preparedbeforehandforglory— evenuswhomhehascalled,25

notfromtheJewsonlybutalsofromtheGentiles? AsindeedhesaysinHosea,

“ThosewhowerenotmypeopleIwillcall'mypeople,'andherwhowasnotbelovedIwillcall'beloved.'”26

“Andintheveryplacewhereitwassaidtothem,'Youarenotmypeople,'theretheywillbecalled'sonsofthelivingGod.'”

27AndIsaiahcriesoutconcerningIsrael:“ThoughthenumberofthesonsofIsraelbeasthesandofthesea,onlyaremnantofthem

28willbesaved, fortheLordwillcarryouthissentenceuponthe

29earthfullyandwithoutdelay.” AndasIsaiahpredicted,

“IftheLordofhostshadnotleftusoffspring,wewouldhavebeenlikeSodomandbecomelikeGomorrah.”

30What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue

righteousnesshaveattainedit,thatis,arighteousnessthatisby31faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to

32righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why?Becausetheydidnotpursueitbyfaith,butasifitwerebasedon

33works.Theyhavestumbledoverthestumblingstone, asitiswritten,

“Behold,IamlayinginZionastoneofstumbling,andarockofoffense;andwhoeverbelievesinhimwillnotbeputtoshame.”
