THERE ARE VERY fewplaces where adults canreturn to find things thesame as their childhoodmemories. TheChildren’s Library inRichards Landing is oneof those very specialplaces.
Established in 1934 as agift from the late Mrs.Florence Orrell – lovedand remembered as“The Island’sFairyGodmother”,the Children’sLibrary’s firstand only homewas a formerlyderelict house.Today, itremains one ofthe very fewprivately oper-ated children’slibraries in Canada. Over its long history, every effort has been made to captureand retain its classic, old-time appeal, while responding to the developing needsof the community.
“The Children’sLibrary is a greatplace for memo-ries. For parents,it’s “rememberwhen” or “I used toread these books”says Dawn Stinson, the Librarian. “Weare blessed withsummer residents
who are very supportive of the library. We see generation after generation visit-ing – Grandparents who brought theirchildren and now their grandchildren. It’s all part of the atmosphere of thelibrary“.

With two large fir-paneled roomswarmed by a rustic stone fireplace, acozy reading room, an upstairs arts andcrafts room, and the walls lined withmemorabilia and artifacts, the experi-ence offered is truly unique. From thebear rugs to the Chinese Wedding dollsto the antique books, the Children’sLibrary is truly one of a kind.
In addition to its other popular pro-grams, the library is also openThursdays “After School”, where localstudents can drop by for a quiet place touse library resources, study or simplyread in a safe and cozy environment.(Please note New ‘After School’ Hours –Thursdays 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm.}
Their popular Summer program forchildren aged 5 – 10 on Mondayevenings has always been a great
success, based on themes such asPirates, Puppet Mania and ‘Aroundthe World’. Their Story time andcrafts for pre-schoolers (10:30 amWednesday and Thursday mornings)is a must for entertaining andenchanting the wee ones. And, dur-ing the year, other programs andworkshops are given, such as journalwriting, newspaper reporting, song-writing, art classes, book publishingand fire safety.
The Children’s Library is a regular visitfor local students – Primary gradescome once a month for stories andcrafts, while Junior grades come once amonth to learn how a library works.

QUESTION:What are the chances ofgetting wireless Internet in our commu-nity?
ANSWER: Rumours have been circulat-ing for some time now regarding wire-less Internet availability in our ruralarea. Wireless Internet shares the samecellular infrastructure used by cellphones. According to a sales representa-tive at a local cell phone store, your cellphone signal must be at least 3 bars orbetter to receive uninterrupted wirelessInternet. Cell phone signal strengthbelow 3 bars will result in frequentlylost Internet connections and slow per-formance. That’s the state of wirelessInternet today; however, there are newdevelopments reshaping wirelessInternet in the future.Telecommunications giants, Rogers andBell, are installing a more powerfulform of wireless Internet calledWiMAX. The new WiMax technologyreaches farther than regular wirelessInternet. Tests have demonstrated that aWiMAX Internet signal can be receivedup to 40 km from the transmittingtower. Rogers and Bell are equal part-ners in this venture, building and shar-ing new cellular infrastructure compo-nents. To see current progress, visit thewww.rogers.com website. Go to InternetServices, and then to something calledPortable Internet Services. Click on
Coverage Area and use the availabilitytool for Ontario. Anyone with a fond-ness for maps will enjoy examining thegreen-shaded areas which denote cur-rent wireless Internet coverage. SinceRogers and Bell share the same wirelessinfrastructure, coverage is the same forboth companies. In Ontario, the largestwireless Internet coverage is found inthe Muskokas extending up to ParrySound. Look carefully for the tell-talegreen shading in the Sudbury area andaround Thunder Bay. Sadly, our ruralarea lacks this green shading. Tomorrowmaybe? What should you expect whenWiMAX finally arrives? Rogers promiseswireless Internet speeds 25 times fasterthan dial-up Internet. Your wirelessdownloads will be monitored and exces-sive downloading will be subject to sur-charges. Homes and businesses thatrequire good reception will need toinstall an outdoor antenna to comple-ment the indoor receiver-transmitterunit. Looks like Rogers and Bell will uti-lize this new WiMAX technology toreach Internet customers where cable orDSL Internet is just not economicallyviable. The existing wireless Internetsignal is unreachable for most ruralhomes. When WiMAX arrives, will myhome be within the coverage area? What will it cost? Will WiMAX be 25times faster than dial-up? Who knows?

Road Conditions
Thanks to fate, C.P. Wallace and the late Jim Reed, we havefound our piece of heaven on earth. This will be our eighthwinter on St. Joe Island to experience and enjoy. We movedhere, prepared for more snow and colder temperatures. Sofar, (touch wood) I tell everyone the weather is better uphere 365 days of the year.
If you believe the international and local media, this may bethe best place in the whole world to reside.
One negative piece of small talk I sometimes hear revolvesaround summer and winter road conditions. In 40 years ofrural winter driving, I find that Algoma and St. Joe Islandhave the most talented, dedicated and courteous snowremoval operators I’ve ever seen. With much less snow andwind than we’re used to, we’ve never found road conditionsdangerous or impossible.
Before spring comes around, we hope everyone thinks beforecomplaining to a municipal employee or contractor aboutless-than-perfect road conditions. Possibly, realize how goodwe have it here and thank your operator for his long night-time and weekend hours he puts in, to enable us to getaround as easily as we do.
Grateful 5th Side Road Residents,Gord & Sigrid Robinson
Islander’s Important Contribution
I work in a lab with Adam Courtney at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. Adam grew up on St. Joseph Island, graduating from high school in 1999 or so. He recently pub-lished a very important paper regarding auto-immune dis-eases in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences. A brief summary of the article will be published inthe journal Chemistry and Engineering News. I am notentirely sure if your publication would be interested in thistype of story, but I thought I would pass along the informa-tion about the important contributions a product of St.Joseph Island is making to the scientific and health commu-nity. Please see links below.

THE ISLAND CLIPPINGS has received anumber of calls from Residents who haveheard “the news” via SooToday.com thatour Hospital is to be closed. The closureis still only a recommendation at thispoint (one of many recommendations)and NOT yet a fact. The actual decisionby Sault Area Hospital has NOT yet beenmade, and it could prove to be quite diffi-cult for SAH to make such a drastic moveunilaterally. Last weekend’sSooToday.com Reader Poll resulted in an85% vote against the closure (no surprisethere!) and hopefully, the Communitystill talks as loudly as the Consultants.
The Community certainly made its feel-ings clear at Monday’s impromptu “demonstration” in frontof the Hospital, which was taped by a CTV television crewfor Monday’s news.
There are also other options still to be explored, either aspart of the official Consultant’s report, or through other,community-sponsored alternatives.
Let’s not count MMH out yet! Your voice and your contin-ued active support still count. You and your neighbours mustbe heard and seen – not only by SAH and the public, but alsoby MMHA, the Hospital Auxiliary, your local Council – andall your fellow community members who are so closelyinvolved in the fight to keep MMH open. They still need toknow we’re behind them, as the battle goes on. This fight isfar from over!
IT’S NOT OVER YET!

Historical SocietyQUESTION: What is the history ofmedical care on the Island?
ANSWER:Medical care on the Islandwas non-existent up to 1878 when set-tlers began to arrive inlarge numbers. And eventhen, it was neighboursrelying on neighboursand a cabinet of homeremedies. For the mostpart only the healthy sur-vived and it took muchlonger to recuperatewithout the benefit of themedicines and serviceswe have now.
Thomas J. McCort,Physician and Surgeon, was a young Doctor whoresided at Bruce Mines. His name appears onIsland birth and deathregistrations from 1879to 1889. He marriedFanny Marks, daughter ofJohn Marks and MargaretTrainor in 1888 inMarksville, but the couple continued tomake their home in Bruce Mines.
The first resident doctor was Hector M.Ross who served the Island from 1887until he retired in 1903. He had a resi-dence on Richards St. in the RichardsLanding in which he maintained anoffice. At the same time a Dr.Rounthwaite resided in Hilton Beachserving that area from 1898 to 1903.
Dr. John R. Godfrey came to the Island, resided in Richards Landing, and servedthe Islanders from 1903 to 1911. Therewas also a Dr. Wolfstein, who was asummer resident from Cincinnati,Ohio, located in Hilton Beach at thistime. He would treat anyone who cameto him and was not above treating ani-mals as well, as were most of theIsland’s doctors.
Dr. Allen Blackwell came to RichardsLanding in 1911 and took over Dr.Godfrey’s practice and his drugstore onRichards St. He maintained an office onthe second floor and remained on theIsland until 1917 before moving back toPenetanguishene.
All of the above were true “Horse andBuggy” doctors, often staying with thefamily until the patient had sufficientlyrecovered. At times the local ministerwould travel with the doctor if thepatient’s recovery was in doubt. TheIsland being a rural farming communi-ty and cash not always readily available, many people more often than not paidtheir doctors for their services with pro-duce, eggs, chickens, or beef and pork.
Shortly after the close of World War Ithe first hospital came to the Island
largely due to the efforts of theWomen’s Institute. It was started as athree bed Outpost Hospital of the RedCross in an empty residence owned byFred Brason in Richards Landing (now
known as the Bartonhouse). The village councilpaid for rent and fuel. In1925 the St. Joseph IslandHospital Association wasformed, and the ProvincialGovernment chartered it.By November, permanentand summer residents hadcontributed $2,500 to afund raising drive for apermanent hospital, and in1926 the former home ofLanding founder JohnRichards, located onRichards St. also, was cho-sen and purchased.
Unfortunately, this build-ing was destroyed by fire inMarch of 1929. The $3,300derived from insurance waspitifully inadequate forrebuilding, and the unoc-
cupied Anglican Church parsonagelocated on the corner of Elizabeth andLucy St. was rented as a temporary hos-pital until 1930 when Mrs. Mary AnnMatthews, a summer resident fromOhio, donated $35,000 to build a newhospital as a memorial to her late hus-band, Mortimer Matthews, who haddied in a boating incident nearLlewellyn Beach in the autumn of 1927.It was named the Matthews MemorialHospital in his memory.
Others then stepped up to the plate.Florence Orrell, another summer resi-dent, presented a much needed x-raymachine to the hospital. Miss MamieGrindley donated a complete set of sur-gical instruments, and many othersmade generous cash contributions. Dr.J. E. Godfrey, former resident physician,

donated $10,000 in memory of his latewife, to build a maternity ward additionto the hospital, which was completed in1954. Over the years, through the tire-less efforts of the MM HospitalAssociation and the MM HospitalAuxiliary, funds have continuously beenraised to support our hospital and pro-vide for its needs.
The Outpost Hospitals were first estab-lished by the Red Cross, using surpluspost-World War I money, to providemedical care to those outlaying com-munities that had little chance of hav-ing hospitals built otherwise. By 1984this work was becoming more thanthey could handle. They discontinuedits Outpost Hospital Program andMatthews Memorial Hospital fell underthe jurisdiction of the PlummerHospital, which later joined with theGeneral Hospital, to form the SaultArea Hospital Association.
Because of today’s troubled economyand the ever-rising medical costs, the
continued existence of MatthewsMemorial Hospital is once again injeopardy. The Sault Area HospitalAssociation, with their current out-standing deficit of over $13 million, hasbeen advised that, as a cost savingsmeasure, it is in their best interest toclose our Island hospital and its emer-gency room service. Hospital’s emergency departments arealready understaffed and overworked.Does it make sense to increase theirworkload, not to mention the addition-al hour it would take for Islanders andthe North Shore residents our hospitalserves, to receive emergency care? Evenone life lost due to the delay in receiv-ing medical care is one too many!

The Bathtub TestA visitor to a psychiatric facility asked the director what
determined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized. Well, said the director, we fill up abathtub, offer the prospective patient a teaspoon, ateacup and a bucket, and ask him or her to empty
the bathtub.
The visitor said, I see. A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or
the teacup.
No, said the director. A normal person would pull theplug. Do you want a bed near the window?
Did you know that, according to legend, Valentine's Daywas started because of Saint Valentine, a Roman saint
who was executed on February 14th, 270 A.D.? St. Valentine was killed for secretly marrying couples in
defiance of an order of the Roman emperor. The emperor had forbidden marriage after Roman men
began refusing conscription in order to stay home with their wives.
