Targeted Problems Finding the trigger is difficult and time consuming

Doctors rely on history inquiry and may not see symptoms Patients/carers rely on memory to describe symptoms Allergy tests can be risky; may not be accurate; and do not cover all allergens

Effective medication and “action plan” Patient can present varied degrees of symptoms with different triggers Patient can have varied responses to different medications of the same objective Patient self-carries medications and uses based on presented symptoms

First Stage: Eczema (Skin Allergy) 10%~ 20% of children with skin allergy

60% of skin allergy on-set happen before age of 1 and need proper management before 2

Challenges Babies have limited ways of expression; Diagnosis relies on carer’s

descriptions Skin allergy symptoms have several stages may develop across weeks;

Late-stage symptoms seem impossible to be traced back to triggers Skin care can be source of allergy

Eczema Cycle

Second Stage: Food Allergy 1/13 children in US and 1/10 children in Australia have food allergy

Symptoms range from mild symptoms to severe anaphylaxis (systematic multi-organism symptoms)

Doctors find triggers via inquiries and allergy tests Patients are suggested to keep a food journal to deduce triggers Emergency room, family physician and allergy clinic do not share clinical records of allergy

Patients are recommended to carry medication and follow action plan

Challenges Conducting tests may be too risky; For examples, food challenges or skin scratch test can

trigger anaphylaxis Physician-patient communication barrier and inaccurate patient memory Effective and detail anaphylaxis action plan

Third Stage: Allergic Rhinitis (Nasal Allergy) Doctors need frequency, time and place of

flare-up to diagnose triggers

Fourth Stage: Asthma A quantitative way to track asthma conditions

Patients are recommended to document peak expiratory flow (PEF) every day

Early actions can be taken based on PEF

Doctors need frequency of flare-up during day and night in order to prescribe medicine

Challenges PEF meter is for age 5 and up When PEF meter is not available, mild symptoms are often neglected by

carers, teachers; therefore, it might be difficult to trace back to triggers

We need…An interactive app that help parents, care-takers, baby-sitters, and doctors to document, track, analyze and discuss allergy
