Application of Textile on Air

Class Presentation 8th Semester B.tech in

Department of jute &fibre technologyBy

Introduction

The application of textiles in Air is a term used for thematerial used & the process of covering aircraft structures. It is also used for reinforcing plywood structures. Themore effort is being put into design of aircraft interiors tomake them more passenger ‘friendly’.

Increased safety is also being researched to make seatsstronger & bulk head airbags are also plays a vital role inAircraft . The main technical challenges are safety mainlywith respect to flame retardency & weight saving. So thatfurnishings & equipment are refurbished regularly orwhen signs of wear are evident.

Different Textile materials used in Aircraft

Properties:• Fabric coverings provide a light airproof skin in lifting & control

surfaces of the Aircraft.• The seat coverings must have the soil release properties .• The seat belt must last lifetime without any significant

deterioration.• Curtains should have UV protective facility.• Carpets must be extremely hard wearing to cope with the volume

of foot of traffic.• The blanket should have softer feel, protect against cold & soil

during journey.• Pillows should be made as per as the comfort of the passenger

with less stain & good cleanability.• Aircraft lifting airbags have high tear strength, high antiseam

slippage & controlled air permeability.

Fabrics used in Aircraft

Grey fabric Aircraft seat fabrics Aircraft lifting airbags

Floor covering Fly bag luggage

seamless fabric

Specifications of the material used:• Nylon & Butyrate dope used for adhesive in Aircraft

fabric covering.• Woven wool or Wool/nylon blends of 350-450 g/sq.meter

are used for seat covering fabrics.• Polyester yarns of typically 320 ends of 1100 dtex or 260

ends of 1670 dtex yarn are used to make seat belts.• The carpets are generally made of Wool & Nylon fibres.• Nylon 4,6 (Akzo), Nylon 6,6 (210,420 & 840 D),

Polyester & Nylon 6 has been introduced to makeairbags.

• The pilot chute is an umbrella type , 40” inches in diameter & is made from nylon duck.

Essential Testing's Applied:

•Colour fastness•Crocking(wet&dry)• Light fastness•Abrasion•Pilling•Snagging

•Tear Strength•Tensile strength/ breaking & elongation•Stretch & set

•Air permeability test•Stain repellency•Resistance to micro‐organisms•Dimensional Stability test•Flammability resistance test

•Water wicking test•Compression•Stiffness testing•Cleanability test

Fibre and fabric reinforced composites used in modern aircraft body: The latest Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Different Fibres Reinforced Composites in Aircraft construction:-

The fibre reinforced polymer is made by polymer matrix reinforced with fibres.

Reinforcingmaterial

Most common Matrix material

Properties Improved.

•Glass fibres UP, EP, PA, PC, PEM, PBT, PP & VE

Strength, Heat resistance & Elasticity.

•Wood fibres PE, PP, ABS, HDPE & PLA

Flexural strength, Tensile Modulus & Tensile strength.

•Carbon & Aramid fibres

EP, UP, VE & PA Elasticity, Tensile strength, Compression strength & Electrical

strength.
