The National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio)

Law nº 11.105, dated March 24th, 2005

“Brazilian Biosafety Law”

How the NBTs might fit on Brazilian

Biosafety Legislation?

• Previous consultation mechanism with the molecular characterization to

demonstrate if the final product is a GMO or not based on the CTNBio

conclusions.

• Research remains following Brazilian Biosafety Regulation (Biosafety Law

and CTNBio normative)

• Basic Concepts maintained: case by case and risk assessment (“fast track”).

Proposal of Normative for NBTs in Brazil (Under Discussion)

New Breeding Technologies (NBTs)

New Breeding Technologies (NBTs)

• Focus on the Product not in the Process;

• Genetically Modified Organisms without the presence (in

the progeny) of recombinant DNA/RNA or with the

presence of genetic elements that could be obtained by

conventional breeding or natural mutations.
