To Ocala We Came To Ocala We Came To Ocala We Came To Ocala We Came Jeanette Rantala and Sheri Houtakker—
WWWWinter in Ocala, Florida is a horse-lovers dream. There are endless ranches,
ranchettes, race tracks, riding and training stables, stud farms and horse shows
every weekend. Sheri Houtakker and Jeanette Rantala missed seeing you there
this winter. They volunteered for the Live Oaks International Combined
Driving and Show Jumping held at Live Oaks Stud Farm March 9-12.
Day 1: A volunteer coordinator warmly welcomed all volunteers during the
early morning continental breakfast. A lead person for each task met
volunteers at a pre-assigned station to give detailed instructions. This year a
man from Austria was in charge
of driving dressage shows.
Sheri staffed the warm-up
arena for driven dressage on
Thursday, checking in each competitor and alerting them to the start of
their scheduled time. After the turnouts finished their test in the
Competition Arena, Jeanette and two other women measured the axle
between the two rear wheels. This measurement was used in the
obstacle/cones course on Sunday.
Day 2: After a provided lunch on Friday they both assisted scribes for
international judges for more driven dressage tests in the lower arena.
One judge was from France and the other from Sweden.
Day 3: The Horse Network Driving Marathon featured singles, pairs and four-in-hands competing in ponies and horse
divisions on Saturday. Thousands of spectators, walked the perfectly groomed grounds to see horses splashing through
ponds, galloping over bridges, leaping up banks and twisting through mazes of fence as they negotiated hazards in this
timed event. The “Gulch” Hazard was amazing (see pic) and Sheri relieved
one of the spotters while she took a break.
Day 4: On Sunday morning the obstacle/cones course at the Competition
Arena was surrounded by covered bleachers as well as tables with food and
beverage service under white tents. The cones were interspersed among
the jumps used by the jumpers on day three and Sunday afternoon. The
horses, carriages and weather were beautiful and volunteers went home
with t-shirts and visors as mementos of a delightfully long weekend. For
more information check out the website at: www.liveoakinternational.com
On another horsey note, Sheri and Jeanette took dressage riding lessons at
the Big Rock Equestrian Center (BREC), owned by Tyra Vernon, now living in Ocala but originally from near Ashland, WI.
Another Wisconsinite, Autumn Howland from Maple, WI, works for her. The week was topped off by shopping at several
tack shops.

Mini BitsMini BitsMini BitsMini Bits Harness Club Takes On Horse Fair
Connie Johnson--The Northland Horse Fair,
sponsored by Diamond Royal Tack in Superior turned
out to be a very successful event this year and the
display for the Northwoods Harness Club was awesome!
In addition to Smokey Joe's easy entry cart and harness,
this year’s display included a beautiful Doctors Buggy
owned by Jim Block and a very classy wicker road cart
and 1913 Swedish sleigh owned by Candy Hankins.
Candy's display even included some of her fine show
apparel.
We also displayed digital pictures, posters, handouts, a
rein rail and complimentary magazines. The people that
came to visit the booth had lots of questions about the
club, driving, and the vehicles.
We let visitors know that new members are always
welcome, and that the NWHC holds events throughout
the year for all it's members.
Jim Block also gave a very informative demonstration
on "Harnessing the Horse". As always, he did an
awesome job and and was a hit.
Vicki Garro, Alana Maijala, Jim Block, Candy Hankins and
I were all on hand to greet visitors to the booth. It was a
great event with good club participation. The highlight
of the day for me was getting a ride through the mall in
the Doctor’s Buggy with Jim as my horse!

Tabanidae family (i.e. horse flies, deer flies, etc.) there is

Some club members plan on gathering similar materials
to create their own home-made version,
and work on building it at the Memorial
Weekend Bird Sanctionary in late May. If
this interests you, then the following
Youtube Demo should help you get an
idea of what is needed to build your very

May 13-- Diane Monson-- I am hosting a drive at Sand
Dunes State Forest, just west of Zimmerman MN. The
official drive is Saturday May 13 , but can easily be a 2
or 3 days of driving. Hopefully the Dunes horse camp
will be open $16.00 per day, or folks can stay at my
place, I live a block away. The DNR has been kind
enough to open the gate so 4 wheeled vehicles can get
on to the trails. 2 wheels can easily go around the gates,
and out riders are always welcome. The drive is open to
all of the local driving clubs. The only warning is that the
sand can be very deep on the main trails, but enough
smaller trailers to keep us busy, if your horse/pony is
not in condition. I welcome you all, please just E-mail
MDEQ@AOL.COM or phone call 612-670-5958 if you
can join us.
