News from the Board:May Day is upon us and May 1st puts us about half-
way between the spring equinox and summer sol-
stice. That means we are already halfway between
spring and summer! Can you believe how fast time
moves on? Many of our snowbirds have headed
north and others are preparing for the trek. Did you
know that the term “snowbird” has been around for
almost 100 years? It was fi rst used in 1923 to de-
scribe seasonal workers who moved south for the
winter months, and by 1979 it was commonly used
in reference to the large number of retired tourists
who fl ocked to the south. If you are a snowbird, you
are in good company as John D. Rockefeller was
one of the very fi rst snowbirds. Rockefeller was way
ahead of his time and spent the winters in Ormond
Beach, Florida beginning in 1914.
Wherever our snowbirds are right now, please
take the time to be certain that your home here in
The Mainlands is safeguarded. Be certain to leave
a key with a neighbor whom you can trust and ask
him to enter your home once or twice a month to
check on appliances, sinks, air-conditioning systems
and other possible sources of problems. Make sure
to remove all movable objects from outside your
home as they could turn into dangerous projec-
tiles that could damage your home or a neighbor’s.
Insurance companies suggest that you close your
drapes and blinds in order to help keep strangers
from peeking in to see what you own and to discov-
er signs you may be away. They also suggest setting
your air conditioning to about 80 degrees, enough
to keep bills down and to prevent mold build-up on
walls and carpets. Be sure to shut off your water! If
you have fruit trees please have someone pick up
any fruit that drops off so that you don’t give fruit
rats their favorite food to eat. Remember also that
the care of bushes and shrubs is the responsibility of
the homeowner. You cannot guard against every
problem, which is why it also may be wise to leave a
key with a neighbor in case someone needs to enter
your home during an emergency.
A reminder that recently the board passed a
resolution concerning plastic bags and curbside
trash. Eff ective May 1, if trash is put at the curb the
night before the pickup, it MUST be placed in lidded
cans. This was enacted because rodents and birds
have been picking apart plastic bags left curbside, at
night.
Any change to our bylaws must be voted on and
passed by homeowners at our annual meeting in Oc-
tober. If there is any change that you would like the
board to consider, you must present this to a board
member by May 31. Once accepted by the board, the
proposed changes are sent to our legal counsel so
that the change may be written in voting format.
May your days be as bright as the fl owers
of May.
Respectfully,
Linda Byrd
Homeowners’ Board President

Social Club NewsEaster is over and I hope everyone celebrated it with
family.
Soon our Northern and Canadian friends will
head back home. We wish them a good summer and
hope they return healthy next fall.
Our Memorial Day Service is coming up. If
you know someone who has passed away last year
or this year let us know, call Linda Bonnemann so
we can put them on the list. I hope everyone will
come. We will have fried chicken and potato salad
and dessert, all for $ 8.00.
Respectfully,
Leni Miller, Social Club President
Women’s Club NewsWe hope you were rewarded with many blessings
during the Passover and Easter seasons. Sam and I
always consider ourselves lucky as we got to picnic
with old friends, family and especially the littlest
grandchildren. So much fun tossing eggs, hiding
and watching little ones hunt for eggs and eating too
much chocolate. After the sugar rush we said good-
bye to the little ones and let their parents deal.
Our April installation meeting at Banquet
Masters was a fun afternoon. Much thanks to Nova
Redlow for her grace and charm in installing the
Board of Directors. She gave each of us chocolate
bars. Each candy bar was descriptive of the board
members job. Thank you Nova, you are a very
special lady. Special thanks also to Ruth Bartlett,
our historian, for the lovely album she put together
chronicling the meetings and events of the women’s
club from September 2016 through April 2017.
I will have the album available for members to
review at the next meeting. We will certainly miss
Ruth, who is moving back to her childhood state
to be closer to family. If you like to take pictures,
please consider volunteering to be our historian for
our next season.
The Hawaiian Luau on April 29 was a fun
event. Our entertainer Mark Ralston played the mu-

great, thanks to our Board who prepared the pulled
pork sandwiches and baked the lovely desserts. Our
Unit 4 artists painted a Hawaiian back-drop and
people lined up to have their pictures taken. Thank
you, Bruce Christick and Judi Harriman for sharing
your time and talent. We also have to say a big thank
you to Sally Small for sharing her magnifi cent cam-
era and spearheading the photo opportunity.
Our fi nal luncheon will take place at the club-
house on Tuesday, May 9. Hoagie sandwiches will
be on the menu and members will bring a dish to
complement the fare.
As this may be my fi nal Fourcaster article until
September, may I take this opportunity to thank
every board member, Sally Small 1stV.P., Maureen
Corley 2nd V.P., Carole Root, Secretary, Vickie Bes-
singer, Treasurer and our committee members Jayne
Fafard, Sunshine lady and Ruth Bartlett, historian.
There were also many people who helped without
a title like Clara Petrelis, Lou Fill and Susan Ohl.
Please forgive me if I have forgotten to mention you,
know that everything you do to support the Wom-
en’s Cub is much appreciated. Any success we have
is a result of your support.
We wish you all a very pleasant and safe sum-
mer.

Painting News:This fall the following Unit 4 homes will be painted:1. 36th Way N. (Exclusions: 9700, 9701, 9710, 9720, 9730, 9740)
2. 36th Street (Exclusion: 9700)
3. 98th Terrace
4. 98th Street N.
The painting begins in September, typically right after Labor Day. Your house will be power washed prior
to painting. Last year new shutter paint color options were selected and have been posted on the clubhouse
bulletin board, so please take a look! Your current color may no longer be an option. If your home is going
to be painted, please read the following carefully, as it lets you know what to expect.1. The front door and the shutters will be painted the existing color(s) unless notifi cation of desired color
change is submitted in writing to a member of the board by August 1, 2017.
2. Side and back doors and garage doors will be painted white, the same as the walls of your home.
3. At the written request of the homeowner any door may be omitted from being painted (written request to be submitted by August 1.) As an added measure put a reminder note on the door that is NOT to be painted.
4. If no direction is received in writing by August 1, the paint director will select the front door color and shutter color that most closely matches what is currently on your home.
5. The shutters (and front door if requested) may be painted a color other than what is on our color chart, if approved by a member of the Board. Contact the paint director to receive the necessary specs on the paint that must be purchased by the homeowner and be available to the contractor when he arrives. As a reminder, the front door must be white or the same color as the shutters.
6. Awnings will be washed but NOT painted unless requested by the homeowner in writing by August 1. There is an additional charge that is paid directly to the paint contractor immediately upon comple-tion.
