Final Project Description This semester’s topic is “Rendering Nature: making the invisible perceivable”. Students will first explore and develop small-scaled environmental installation designs on an individual basis. Then our team selected our own site and collaboratively design and install their full-size work.

Site Analyze

we call this site the “Edge” which is located at the

corner of the parterre. Then we analyze the advantages

and weakness of this site to guide our design and

determine What points we can use and what points we

need to avoid.

The Wind in the edge is comparatively strong, which means we may use this advantage or change this condition.

The view of the hill is another profitable point. We may give an exposure on this side to let the individual to have a good

glance of this beautiful hill.

There are enough sunlight which could achieve multiple light-handling method.

Individual Work Iteration I - IV

This is the first iteration of the final design models. I used the sectioning, which is a series of profiles whose edges follow the line of surface geometry, as the major element, to create a gradual changes like the wins and waves.

The second iteration I used folding and tessellation as the primary elements. The translucent pieces create a huge contrast with Batemale building. However this design needs to be improved because it doesn’t has a stable base and even can

fly away by a gust of wind.

Then I designed two kinds of top pieces, combining the tessellation pieces and the table base together.

The second one I use overlapping and repetition instead of tessellation as the theme to design the top which is like the fish scale.

Group Design Development

We alternatively chose triangles as our theme of the final design for the following reasons:•  The triangle has outstanding structural

stability•  The triangle will make an obvious

contrast with Batemale’s brutalist box•  The triangle has management folding

capacibility

First we list our specific needs: the wind, three organized areas and light. To satisfy these needs, our approach is using Aerodynamic by folding the triangle frames and skinning them to let wind enter the structure with ease, and we designed entrance and exit detached from the main structure to created complexity. The sitting area is in the center for social interaction. Then, we designed the structure that allows sunlight to enter, but we also wanted to reduce light and UV rays by adding the translucent pieces to create a pleasant experience for individuals who explore this space.

Materials

Materials List· 2x6 boards for framing· 4’x8’ plywood· 4’x8’ Opaque Acrylic sheets· Simson A34 Framing Angle · Wooden pegs (for connections on frame)· Stake holders· Cement stakes· Screws· Yarn· Silicone glue· Wood glue

The wood and plastic panels.

Construction Process

Initially, we worked at Fidel’s shop to cut the wood board, the wood and plastic panels. Then we assembled these pieces together.

The first day to install on our site.

In order to prevent the rain damaging to the wood, we painted lacquer to protect the wood panels.

We use frames to connected these triangle plastic pieces to create a intersection angle like the pieces which showed on our final model.

The plastic panels and the path were gradually set up.

We also created a view spot outside the structure to let people have a glance of the hill on the opposite side.

Made these stairs to create a path to invite people to get

in to our main structure .
