Fauvism – Art History

Based in a small town outside Paris 1904 – 1908

Strongly influenced by the work of Van Gogh, Cezanne, and other artist of the late 1800’s.

Henri Matisse is considered the leader of the movement.

This movement was all about COLOR.

Characterized by bold brush strokes and vibrant use of colors.

While widely respected today, the Fauves received mostly poor reviews when they were first exhibited.

Fauve means “Wild Beasts”

Henri Matisse (French)

This is where Matisse started out.

Would you be flattered if someone painted you this way?

Pointillism. Right there.Check it out.

Why does Paris look so tropical?!

Hi, I’m Andre Derain.

I worked with Matisse to create a new style of painting featuring brilliant, unrealistic

colors.

I was also a snappy dresser.

BLENDING EVERWHERE!!

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Guten Tag. I’m Ernst Kircher. I’m from Germany.

Check out my amazing Technicolor dream-robe! I

painted myself in it in 1910.

I’m not technically a Fauve artist, but my art was strongly

influenced by them.

I’ll eventually go to WWI, go crazy, and kill myself. But for

now I live like a rock star!
