Preliminary Task-Cover and contents of a
college magazine
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Front cover similarities-
Both magazines include a masthead
Both include various cover
lines
Dominant MCU image using rule of
thirds
Both have a background matching
the colour scheme
Front cover differences-
I have used banners at the top and bottom whereas this one
hasn’t included them
My mast head is rounded and the
VOGUE mast head is over the image
whereas my image is underneath
The VOGUE front cover has cover lines
on both sides whereas mine only
has them on the left
My image the girl is looking towards the camera front on whereas the VOGUE magazine her body is turned away from the camera but her head turned towards it creating a more mysterious effect
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Contents Page
Both include mast head titles
Use sub headings to help reader
Both include page
numbers
Both include images to
attract reader
Both include the date issued in the top right corner
Contents page differences-My contents includes
3 little images whereas VOGUE is one main image, by
using one main image it is as if that person is welcoming the reader and telling them what
to expect
VOGUE contents page doesn’t
include a banner
A lot more text is on the VOGUE contents page whereas mine
states the page titles VOGUE gives more extra information
My titles have banners behind them
whereas VOGUE’s doesn’t
What have you learnt about the technologies from theprocess of constructing this product
Digital CameraWe used a digital camera to take the original images that we were potentially going to use in our contents and front cover magazine, we could then upload them onto the computer ready to edit in the other programmes. By using this I learnt about all the different shot types and angles are best to create what effect.
Adobe Photoshop CS6
We used the program Adobe Photoshop CS6 to produce the front cover of the magazine utilising all of the different tools on offer and I also used it to edit my original images in to make them more professional to later use.
Adobe InDesign
Another program I used was Adobe InDesign which was where I had my double page spread and produced my contents page on by using the different tools and options.
The website Moodle was also used to see examples and use resources
The digital camera was used so that I could take an image that was an MCU as specified, it was to be big so it dominated the readers attention and caught their eye. I made sure I abided by the rule of thirds so that my image was also slightly towards the right to ensure I could fit cell lines would fit in on the left. IN addition to this I made sure that their was space above my models head so that I could easily fit in a mast head at the top.
I then used Adobe Photoshop to make sure my images stood out and were defined by editing them and altering the contrast and brightness adding shadows too, so that they were more aesthetically pleasing and add emphasis on the student. I also cropped the image so that the face was closer and more visible.
To improve I think I could have utilised Adobe Photoshop to edit the text and make it stand out more and look more interesting rather than a normal font. Also I could use a flasher on my front cover to add more substance and interest.
Using In-design For my Contents page
I used a coloured box at the top and bottom of the page that I coloured black to create a banner look creating a more professional impression.
I ensured I used the same colours on the contents that I did on the front cover to create a house style that will be consistent
I think to improve my contents page I could have filled the dead space that is spotted around the whole page. I could have also used more text such as a writers note to welcome the readers and give them a deeper insight into what to expect from the magazine. Perhaps to improve I could also use effects on the text to attract my student target audience however there wasn’t much time allocated for this project for me to discover how.did use columns and I think I used text quite well.
