Choosing Sunglasses
For Sunny Weather From: Nurse Marilyn
Remember you can always check the weather forecast on WKBW First Alert
Weather. Please vote for Tuscarora School on WBKW Andy Parker’s Weather
Machine Contest at: www.weathermachine.com
As you slather on sunscreen to protect your skin this summer, don’t forget
sunglasses to protect your eyes. The same harmful rays that damage skin can also
increase your risk of developing eye problems, such as cataracts –a clouding of the
eye’s lens that develops over the years.
In the short term, people who spend long hours on the beach or in the snow
without adequate eye protection can develop photokeratitis, reversible sunburn of
the cornea. When sunlight reflects off of snow, sand and water, it further increases
exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These invisible high energy rays lie just
beyond the violet end of the visible light spectrum.
Everyone is at risk for eye damage from the sun year round. The risk is greatest
from about 10 am to 4 pm. Fisherman, farmers, beach-goers, and others who spend
time in the sun for extended periods are at the highest risk.
UV radiation in sunlight is commonly divided into UVA and UVB, and your
sunglasses should block both forms. Don’t assume that you get more UV
protection with pricier sunglasses or glasses with a darker tint. Look for a label that
specifically states that the glasses offer 99 to 100 percent UV protection.
Sunglasses should be dark enough to reduce glare, but not dark enough to
distort colors and affect the recognition of traffic signals. Tint is a matter of
personal preference. For best color perception, lenses that are neutral grey, amber,
brown or green are recommended. People who wear contact lenses that offer UV
protection should still wear sunglasses.
Children also should wear sunglasses. They shouldn’t be toy sunglasses, but
real sunglasses that indicate the UV protection level just as with adults.
Even with sunglasses with 100% UV protection, light still enters from the sides
& over the top. If you are in the at risk category –consider sunglasses that wrap all
the way around the temple & a hat with a 3 inch brim can help block sunlight that
comes in from overhead.

Unplug and Read! PARP 2015
The Theme-This year’s PARP theme is inspired by the book
Doug Unplugged by Dan Yaccarino. In the book, a robot is
plugged in each day, but one day he unplugs and discovers all of
the wonderful things the world has to offer.
Did you know? Too much time screen time (time spent using
computers, video games, phones and video games) can lead to
poor school performance, behavioral problems, trouble sleeping, obesity and less
time for play. 1998-2015 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research
The Challenge-During PARP (May 11-22), students will be challenged to unplug
each day and read or listen to someone read. Students will fill out a form each
week and turn it in to Mrs. Diegelman or Mrs. Brock.

3 Energy-Boosting Snacks To Help Get You Through The Day By Justin Caba
Here are three energy-boosting snacks packed with fiber and protein to keep you going throughout the workday.
We’ve all been there before — that midday slump when all of our hard work for the past couple of hours really starts to weigh us down. We debate over our fourth cup of coffee or maybe go straight for the sugar-laden energy drink, even though we know that’s probably not the best decision for our health. Instead of struggling with that sudden urge to use your desk as a pillow, reach for a low-calorie, energy-boosting snack that will give you the strength to power through the day. Whether you’re looking for that extra rush of energy before the gym, working with your hands all day, or trying to avoid turning your cubicle into a bedroom, here are four healthy snacks that will help you sustain energy throughout the day: 1. Greek yogurt with granola By now, we have all heard how nutritious protein-packed Greek yogurt is, but on its own it can
leave a bitter and almost sour taste in your mouth. To make plain white Greek yogurt more palatable, add some granola for
flavoring. Not only will it bring a little taste to your probiotic snack, but the fiber found in granola’s oats can help you feel fuller
for longer. Combine that with the 18 grams of protein found in a 6-oz. cup of Greek yogurt and your midday snack containing
around 200 calories should hold you over until dinnertime. No need to worry about Greek yogurt’s sugar content. All of the
sugar found in Greek yogurt naturally occurs from milk.
2. Fruit with peanut butter- Fruit by itself may not seem too enticing, but add 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter and this
nutrient-filled snack can be just as delicious as it is healthy. A lot of people think about peanut butter and stress over the word
BUTTER. A healthy serving of peanut butter can actually provide you with a good amount of fiber, potassium, and protein,
which is why many health professionals regard it as a heart-healthy snack. The best part about this option is that you can mix
and match which fruit you would like to add. From apple slices to bananas to strawberries, this midday snack can satisfy any
palate. Just make sure you’re not going overboard with the peanut butter. Measure out 2 tablespoons of Skippy Natural peanut
butter for the perfect balance of calories, fat, protein, and other nutrients.
3. Vegetables with Hummus- If vegetables slathered in ranch dressing is your idea of a healthy snack it’s time to rethink your
options. You got the vegetables part right, but turn around a bottle of ranch salad dressing and you’ll find it's packed with
calories, saturated fat, and sodium. Try switching out ranch dressing for hummus to healthy up your midday snack. Combining
chickpeas, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, and tahini paste, you can’t go wrong with baby carrots, celery, and sliced peppers
alongside 2 tablespoons of fresh hummus. High in both fiber and protein, hummus can help with satisfying your appetite and
sustaining energy when your work comes bearing down on you.

they created and solved addition sentences to match the array.
Arrays will be used as a strategy for solving word problems as well.
ELA In Writer’s Workshop we learned
what makes up a fictional narrative.
We read several mentor texts by
authors such as Ezra Jack Keats and
