Superintendent Message: BRAVO on a Tremendous Start!
Week one is in the books...and what a week!
Thank you again for the extraordinary effort – on everyone’s part – in preparing for the start of this unique beginning of the year. Being an old drama teacher, I equated this to the night before the performance where everyone is scrambling and there seems to be no way we will be able to pull it off. And yet, every time, the show is tremendous, and the crowd loved it! I do think our first week was tremendous, and I would say the majority of our families loved it.
Of course, one week does not make a year and we still have the charge to ensure that all of our students are engaged, feel empowered and are learning to the best of their ability, so they can be prepared for whatever opportunity they choose when they leave our system – College, Career and Life readiness. This work
is made more difficult, of course, in the land of remote learning. With your exceptional communication skills, empathetic hearts and compassionate mindset, however, I know you are up for the challenge.
I was able to sit
in on a Fall City
Elementary
“assembly”
this week. Look
at these faces!
Remote or in person, this is why we do what we do.
Keep up the amazing work you are all doing, and thank you again for being who you are for our students, families and each other.
I hope to see you soon as I am still making rounds to schools every few days!
Take care,
—
Superintendent Robert W. Manahan, Ed.D.

District Health & Safety Plans Are Available Online
Special thanks to Nurse Anne McGavran for leading efforts last spring and throughout the summer around defining our district’s Health and Safety Plan, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. For staff who are working in our buildings now, and in preparation for when we resume in-person classroom learning, there are a few resources you can access for guidance. It’s important to note, however, that these are WORKING DOCUMENTS that continue to be updated as new information about the coronavirus becomes available and as safety guidance for schools evolves. The following resources are located on the Staff tab of our district website:
COVID-19 Health & Safety Resources: SVSD Staff Health & Safety Plan/Letter 8-21-20 (2 pages) COVID-19 Job Site Safety for SVSD Employees Supplemental Plan 8-16-20 (6 pages) WORKING DRAFT of the District Health and Safety Plan as of 8-31-20 (56 pages) COVID-19 Public Health resources
To protect yourself and others: Wear a mask. Wash your hands often. Stay 6 feet apart. Get tested if you have any COVID symptoms. Stay home when you’re ill. And, continue to use the QR code system upon entry to SVSD buildings as this is currently our contact tracing model should we have a case of COVID-19. (We are also looking into another tool for health attestations and tracking — more information to come.)
SVSD Welcomes Four New Leaders to the District!
This summer four school administrators to join our leadership team.
We welcome Scott Beebe as Executive Director of Digital Learning and Innovation; he joins us from the Marysville School District.
Nicole Fitch, the new Executive Director of Student Services, previously served students in Seattle Public Schools; she replaces Nancy Meeks who retired in July.
Chris Hill was hired from Moses Lake to serve as Athletic/Activities Director at Mount Si High School; as Darren Brown opted to teach this year.
And, Josh Young joins us from the Kent School District as Assistant Principal at Timber Ridge Elementary School, partnering with Principal Kaaren Kim.
Please extend them a warm welcome, when you have the opportunity, and read the full story for their biographies.
