Introducing ArtbagWe are delighted to offerexciting and highly originalworks from the Artbag seriescreated and made by artistDebra Franses Bean.
Debra describes Artbag as awindow into her soul and itwas whilst studying atCentral St Martins School ofArt (2002-2005) that theidea for these firstmaterialised. Debra took abeautiful handbag from a top
couture house and adapted it into a silicone mould for casting. The first bag was in heavy white plaster, but, her next bag,Catch, was cast in resin, and featured a goldfish inside a tank ofwater, mounted on a plinth. Her first pieces were highlyautobiographical as through these Debra visualised how shewas feeling about various areas of her life. Although this focushas shifted over time Debra acknowledges that every bag is adistillation of who she has met, where she has been and whatshe has seen in the world. As Debra explains, ‘…all interactionsleave a trace in me which inspire my work’. Every Artbag has atitle and these are equally as intriguing: ranging from a single, punchy word through to smart, thought-provoking statementswhich brand and define the Artbag.
Debra explores ideas centred on consumption and massproduction, and recognises the complex relationship we havewith material objects as consumable goods. With their kitschyelements these works are a clear nod to pop art, however, theyalso reference our contemporary digital age, as the contentswould be acquired through online shopping and socialnetworking. Objects span the low and high levels of comfort, prestige and style. The process of resin encapsulation results in
a visually-heightened presentation of the chosen items, withthe anticipation of their consumption forever suspended in timeand never to be realised.
The creation of an artbag has been likened to mummification ina slick and chic resin coffin. Objects are selected to ensure thatthey won’t break or melt in the casting process, andoccasionally delicate items need their own mould. The siliconemould of the handbag is in two parts and an initial layer ofobjects is laid out in each half. Liquid resin is poured in, inlayers, with a day in between for each layer to cure and withfurther objects added to build up the layers. The completedhandbag is then put into a pressure chamber where any last bitsof air are removed. This is the most delicate stage of theprocess as bubbles can be created in the resin. Once cured thehandbag stays in the mould for several days and when removedit is sanded down, polished to a high sheen and lacquered.
Debra Franses Bean was born in London in 1967, she studiedPolitics and Economics and initially pursued a career inadvertising. She has lived and worked in New York and London, where she is now based. Her Artbags have been exhibited ingalleries around the globe and she also undertakes privatecommissions. In 2015 she created works for the Coca ColaMuseum to celebrate 100 years of the iconic coke bottle designand her works were shown alongside pieces by some of Debra’sown personal art heroes.
64Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)Divine RevengeMixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of athree dimensional handbag encasing various fabricatedcontents including a golded replica ‘gun’, gold platedchain, gold plated and diamanté ‘Chanel’ charm.29cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm., weight 2kg.£1,500-£2,000
DFB: With its contents of gold, this small feminine bagis equally delicate and dangerous, and full of glamourand tension It conjures feelings of a female James Bond.

65Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)Ode to Warhol IIMixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of a three dimensional handbag encasing variousfabricated contents including a soup can, a pair of glitter shoes, lipstick, a small golden replica ‘gun’, adollar bill and ‘Chanel’ bottle of perfume.56 cm. x 40 cm. x 16 cm., weight 15kg.£5,500-£6,500
DFB: My homage to the iconic father of Pop Art, featuring a plethora of kitsch signs and signifiers fromWarhol’s oeuvre. This work personifies 1960s’ Americana and would be a perfect accompaniment to aPop Art or handbag collection. This is one of two similar artworks, and each is unique. The other example is owned by Tanya BaxterContemporary, Hong Kong.

66Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)The Emoji BagColoured painted and solid transparent resin, in the form of a three dimensional handbag encasingnumerous fabricated colourful Emoji ideograms and smileys.56 cm. x 40 cm. x 16 cm., weight 15kg.£5,500-£6,500.
DFB: I was inspired by the visual global phenomenon of the Emoji as a communication to identify with ouremotions in a non-verbal, international digital language.
These icons of communication, used by both adults and children, add humour to our lives.Hand painted balls of coloured resin sit inside, some reflecting the viewer through small mirrors and sobringing the outside inside and the inside out. This bag makes me so happy every time I look at it, it has been part of my private collection since 2015.

67Debra Franses Bean (b.1967) EleganceMixed media in solid transparent resin in the form of a three dimensional handbag encasing variousfabricated contents including lipsticks, a golden replica ‘gun’, a gaming chip, a ‘Chanel’ compact andperfume bottle and a miniature black bag.56 cm. x 40 cm. x 16 cm., weight 15kg.£6,500-£7,500DFB: Created for the woman of quality; she wears vintage Dior, Chanel and Prada and writes with a MontBlanc pen.
Her seductively made up eyes hide tantalisingly behind designer shades. She holds secrets, gambles and her bag teems with £50 notes. Her temper she tames with champagne, elegant, yet wild, sexy and just a little dangerous too.

70Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)‘Bang!’Mixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of a threedimensional handbag encasing a black replica ‘gun’.29 cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm., weight 2kg.£1,200-£1,800.DFB: Bang! is colder and more overtly masculine than Divine Revenge,it is simply a single black pistol concealed in a small handbag.
The adage ‘never judge a book by its cover’ has never had a morefitting consequence.

68Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)Butterfly BluesMixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of a three dimensionalhandbag encasing common British butterflies, such as the Duke of Burgundybutterfly and the Pearl Bordered Fritillary butterfly.29 cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm., weight 2kg.£1,300-£1,500DFB: Butterfly Blues presents a dichotomy between the freedom to fly and thebrevity of life. It expresses the delicate balance between freedom and captivity. The butterflies were purchased from the Education Department at ButterflyWorld, Herts which is now closed.
69Debra Franses Bean (b.1967)Lava BagMixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of a three dimensionalhandbag encasing bubbles of orange 'lava'.29 cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm., weight 2kg.weight 2kg.£1,200-£1,800DFB: This iconic bag makes reference to the larva lamp from the 60’s. Eachmolecule has been hand made and replicated to look like the originalEdward Craven Walker design which consisted of a special coloured waxmixture inside a glass vessel. The heat warmed wax rises through thesurrounding liquid, cools, loses its buoyancy, and falls back to the bottomof the vessel in a cycle that is visually suggestive of pāhoehoe lava, hencethe name. This sculpture is an abstract formation that has a playful yetbiological aesthetic. I made this one in Orange.

DFB: One of a series of unique Artbags inspired by the sophistication of Parisian women.Taking its design credentials from slick grooming, a chic wardrobe and luxury accessories. She loves the high life in the one of the world’s most iconic cities, likewise money. And, from time to time, slightly dangerous men when she kicks off her heels.

DFB: Inspired by the sport of success: for city boys who become men, the golf client, thechampagne nights and gambling risk takers. This artwork is a tribute to the hard working ethic and nerves of steel needed to win the game ofmoney and secure financial success. The ‘Manbag’ is my most recent creation: a critique of the celebration and glorification of excesswhich defined our culture through the closing decades of the 20th century.
