USA National Karate Championships and USA Team Trials Results
Greenville, South Carolina
Tibon’s Goju Ryu Fighting Arts Karate program had 9 students attend the USA National
Karate Federation National Championships and USA Team Trials in Greenville, South
Carolina. I’m proud to announce that out of the 5 athletes who tried out for the USA National
Team Trials for Junior and Senior National Karate Team, 4 of our students made the national
team pool. The athlete who did not make the team this year was on the USA Team National
Karate Team last year to the Pan-Am’s in Brazil.
Joane Orbon was a tremendous standout with fighting 12 matches and only losing one match
in the Women’s Open Weight Kumite (fighting) where she won the silver medal and a spot on
the USA National Karate Sr. Team for the North American Cup. She dominated her own
division female black belt -61kg Kumite(fighting) for a spot on the USA Team to the World
Championships in Guadalajara –Spain November 7-10, 2013, and to the Pan-American Karate
Championships in Medellin, Colombia August 29-Sept.1, 2013. This will be her 3rd
time to
the world championships last time finishing in the semi-finals out of 80 countries in Morocco
was a great accomplishment for her. This will be her 6th
Pan-American Karate Championships
winning Gold Medal in Chile, Bronze in Brazil, and a Bronze in Canada, etc.
Cristian Embry who also won a silver medal for male 16-17 yr. old -68 kg Kumite the USA
Team Trials for Medellin, Colombia was a member of the USA Karate Team, and two years
ago to the Pan-Am’s in Canada. This year both Joane Orbon and Cristian Embry will both
travel to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO for a week in August with
the USA National Team for training before leaving to Colombia.
Two other athletes Jacob Ruiz and Kaitlyn Gilmour both won spots on the USA National
Team Pool in the Bronze medal position for male and female 12-13 yr. old Kumite (fighting)
divisions. If one of the gold medal or silver medal athletes does not go on the Pan-American
trip to Colombia then they will take their place in their respective division.
Other students did well including Danesah Thompson win Gold medal for a National
Championship title in the female 10-11yr old Novice Kumite division. Claudia Lee also won
Gold medal National Championship title in the 10-11 yr. old advance Kumite division.
Tibon’s Goju Ryu will be hosting several fundraisers to help these athletes with their travel
expenses; any who would like to donate support are welcome to call (209) 465-0943. See rest
of results below.

Sensei Gene Tibon Teaching Kata Sepai Seminar 6 & 7TH
Degree Black Belt Kata
Main Dojo Sunday August 25th, 2013
Time 10am-12:00noon
Cost $40 per person
Must be Two Stripe Green Level and Above to Be Qualified to attend Seminar.
Seipai (“Eighteen Hands”) is derived from 6 x 3 = the 6 represents color, voice, taste, smell, touch, and justice the same as the
second 6 of Sanseru. The 3 represent good, bad, and peace. **Please note that this may not be the ‘exact’ theory of how Seipai was
created. There are numerous different theories and this is one suggestion out of many. The name Seipai originates is from ‘18
(Seipai) Rakan-Te’. The kata consists of 18 basic hand techniques of the 18 Rakan-Ken of Nan-Pa (Ha) Shorin-Ken. It is the 18
hands of basics from Tsuki, Keri and Uke (punch, kick and block). Rakan is a saint whose worldly passions attain a higher
perception of life. Gautama (Sakyamuni) appointed the names of 18 saints and they reached the stage of Arakan.
After Seipai, Sanseiru ( 36 hands) and Suparimpei (108 hands) were created. The two katas were created as a reverse, opposite and
throw technique variations of Seipai. This is why the numbers of Sanseiru and Suparimpei are multiples of 18. It is interesting that
in Japanese, 18-ban (read as ‘Ohako’) can mean favorite and Seipai was Sensei’s Miyagi’s favorite Kata. Seipai includes ‘Gyaku-
Waza’ and ‘Nage-Waza’ with sekkin-sen (close distance fighting). Seipai has particular Goju movements called ‘En’ which means
that all the movements are circular. Seipai has a variety of ‘Atemi-Waza’, ‘Gyaku-Waza’ and ‘Nage-Waza’. There is a good balance
of techniques and energetic motion, and therefore it is a difficult kata to perform.
