Baron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and BaronessBaron and Baroness Greetings Joyous Populace of Tir Ysgithr!
We are truly basking in the glorious reign of our beloved Majesties, Thomas and Ilora.
These are prosperous times for Tir Ysgithr and the kingdom. We danced, drummed,
feasted, drank, and smiled as the populace of Twin Moons showed us hospitality and
amusement. We were overjoyed by the recognition of our populace at Middle East Feast.
To see Lady Elsa offered a Laurel and Lady Thyra offered a Pelican made our hearts
rejoice. Sable Millrind was given a long overdue recognition of the Scarab, for a household
that has been a sound cornerstone of the barony.
We hope many of you will travel to Pennsic to support the Aten Crown. If you are unable
to attend you could always head to Sundragon for Renman. The current Renman is Baron
Heinrich and we should definitely vie to keep the accolade in the south!
Speaking of the south! MACE AND GREATSWORD approaches!!! We are so excited to
reunite with old friends from out of town (we aren't telling who). We know Zhigmun' will
purport himself well in the Bastard Sword Braggart Tourney (knocking down Lord Wilhelm
a notch we hope), and we hope to bring home a mace. No matter how the tourneys go, we
know it will be an amazing time!
Finally Crown Tournament! It will make our hearts heavy to see the reign of Thomas and
Ilora come to an end; however, we trust that many worthy fighters will take the field of
honor to succeed these two mighty gentles. We know whoever wins will be mighty, just,
and worthy. We just hope they are from Tir Ysgithr!
As ever, have fun

We welcome all populace members to

When a commander or sub commander is deciding what tactic to use in a battle there are several things he should keep in mind. These things are the characteristics of the opposing force, the characteristics of his troops, the goal of the battle, the layout of the terrain, and the rules of the
battle.
The Characteristics of the
Opposing Force:
The characteristics of the opposing force are an amalgamation of all the information that a commander can gather about the ‘enemy’. Basically examining the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses. One of the things a commander should look for is the make up of the enemy’s troops. How many spears are there? How many sword and board fighters? The commander could also know specific information about some of the enemy if he had fought the enemy before. For example, is there a group of fighters
that are fast runners? Perhaps the main body of the enemy is slow but good at being defensive. Or the enemy could have a group of fighters that often act as a reserve or go off to try to flank. All of these facts should play a part in the tactics a commander uses
in battle.
The Characteristics of His
Troops:
Much of this factor involves the same type of considerations as in the previous section, only this time a commander is examining the strengths and weaknesses of his troops. A commander
should know the different types of weapons at his command and how many there are. A commander should also have knowledge of what his troops are capable of and what each of them is best suited for. This information can be critical in troop placement and using resources to their fullest
potential.
The Goal of the Battle:
The goal of the battle should be the foremost thought in a commander’s brain. The goal of the battle will help to determine the best tactics for that battle. A battle where the object is

to fight to the last man might require careful consideration of each side’s strength before committing to an attack. It may even be that a very defensive position is the best one to take for a battle to the last man. Whereas a capture the flag battle could necessitate more aggressive tactics. It is no good for a commander to be defensive and save his men if he does not first capture the flag. When a commander loses sight of the goal of a battle he can make tactical decisions that, while accomplishing their purpose, do nothing
to win the battle.
The Layout of the Terrain:
The layout of the terrain is important for troop movement and tactics. If there is a lot of broken ground then running or charging may not be the best tactic to use. Or if there is a heavily wooded area, the trees need to be considered as obstacles to troop movement and as object that will direct the
flow of the troops, on both
sides.
The Rules of the Battle:
This facet of the battle is particular to SCA style (recreation aspect) of combat. Part of the rules of the battle has to deal with resurrections. A battle that has resurrections will be a different battle than a fight with no resurrections. Another thing a commander should consider is where the boundaries of the fight are. Can these boundaries be used for offensive or defensive purposes? Is there a cliff that the enemy troops or his troops can be pushed off of? The different types of boundaries and the placement of those boundaries will affect the tactics a commander uses. Finally, there are the different rules of combat among kingdoms. For fighters and commanders who mostly stay in kingdom this will not be as big of a concern. However, once a commander or fighter is traveling outside of the
kingdom then the tactics they use will change depending on the combat rules for that kingdom. For example, flanking tactics would be less useful in a kingdom that does not
allow death from behind.
These five things are merely the beginning of tactics in battle. Once these things are given consideration then the information they generate must be matched with the right tactics and other items, like pressure mechanics, should be taken into account. However, the items listed here are a good place to start thinking about the ‘why’ of battle. Obviously, it is crucial for the commander to know why a specific tactic is the best option for a specific battle. Yet, every fighter should be thinking about these ideas before, after, and, on occasion, during a battle. They will give the fighter a better appreciation for the tactical decision a commander makes and the opportunity to be a better
war fighter.

If you’re a fan of the Brilliant British
Comedy series from the 1970’s called
Monty Python’s Flying Circus, you would
KNOW that, no one *EXPECTS* THE
SPANISH INQUISITION (Stinging Musical
Fanfare!)…..
Relax, you’re not about to be carted off by
Cardinals Ximemez, Biggles and Fang, but
at any moment, you could be. Sometimes
life makes you LONG for the Soft Pillows
and some treatment in “The Comfy Chair”.
Things tend to sneak up on you when you
least expect it. Unfortunately it’s not
usually something nice like Michael Palin
and the Terry’s Squared (Jones and
Gilliam) sneaking up on you in red robes
and colorful, yet tasteful hats.
At this point you’re probably going, “Fergie,
you come out of left field so often that we
don’t know what the hell you’re talking
about!” And you’d be right. This time I will
speak plainly, even more plainly than
Marvin Zindler of KTRK-TV Channel 13
Eyewitness News, Houston, TX, when he
said, “Texas has a Whorehouse in it!” (He
really did. I saw it live in 1973. That’s why it
was part of the lyrics in the musical and
the movie, “The Best Little Whorehouse in
Texas”.)
I’m talking about Cancer.
Ok, THAT got your attention, admit it.
In the past two months, I have been
diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma on
my face. It’s a skin cancer that rarely
metastasizes or kills, but it can leave your
face pretty disfigured if left untreated.
Because of the destructive nature of it, it is
considered a malignant cancer. (I’m hoping
that by the time this article is read I will
have finished my second, and hopefully
FINAL, treatment to get rid of this crap.)
This little adventure hit me right in the gut,
Hard. Many of my family, some really cool
friends and bunches others have been
taken from me by one form of this blight or
another.
It has led me to do some SERIOUS
thinking. (Something I urge everyone to do
every once in a while and not just when
moles on your face start making ticking
bomb noises.) And not just about my own
mortality.
Ask yourself, “What is important to me?”
If you are honest with yourself, you may be
surprised by some of the answers. I was.
One of the answers I will share here is the
SCA. (Well, I *AM* writing in one of their
publications.)
The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here”The View From “Up Here” A tall, goof’s perspective of the SCA and whatever else strikes his fancy.A tall, goof’s perspective of the SCA and whatever else strikes his fancy.A tall, goof’s perspective of the SCA and whatever else strikes his fancy.

Why is the SCA important to me? Is it the
Family I’ve found? ; The Friendships? ; The
memories? ; The Dream?
Or, has it been something else for me: The
chance to occasionally “get my inner letch
on” when I’m really throwing up a wall of
BS to keep you from seeing how scared to
death of you I really am?; How I laugh and
make jokes while keeping everyone at
arm’s length?; Acting the goof when every
day I have to will myself to get out of bed,
and even then I’m usually late for the rest
of the day?; How I start with grand ideas
and never see them to fruition? How I try
and look all fancy, knowledgeable and
interesting…and fall flat of my face…
If you guys haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a
pretty messed up cat.
I’ve realized that the SCA is Hope. As such,
there may be some hope for me: Hope that
I can improve myself. Hope that I can see a
dream and realize it. Hope that I can forget
the real world for a while. Hope that
through the use of Chivalry and Honor that
there may be redemption for a wretch like
me.
Hope is, whatever the circumstance, the
knowledge that I Can.
Admit it; you weren’t expecting “True
Confessions”, were you.
Neither was I when I first started to write it.
Now I go forward with whatever life throws
at me. Reaching a goal is less important
than giving it my best effort.
I’m a work in progress
like each and every one
of us is. Hopefully
together, we might not
turn out too shabby.
And remember to wear
sunscreen…

Knight (KSCA), Master at Arms (MSCA), Companion of the Laurel (OL), and/or Companion of the Pelican (OP). When looked at as a group, Tir Ysgithr’s Peers represent hundreds of years of experience participating in SCA activities. We thought it would be valuable to learn more about what those Peers think, and share that knowledge by publishing their
responses to a monthly question posed by the staff of the Tusker TimesTusker TimesTusker TimesTusker Times.

the first step in every new friendship.

Hear Ye!! Hear Ye!! Greetings unto the Populace of the Kingdom of Atenveldt, does the current Renman, Baron Heinrich Loescher of Mons Tonitrus, send greeting and does announce that it is time to select a new Renman/Renwoman from the populace. The competitions this year will include the always twisted political game, a Bardic competition, a Flirting contest, and a Challenge tourney for Rapier. Just as last year, there will also be several secret/ hidden contests going on throughout the event. So come to the only indoor fighting event in Atenveldt, come for the fun and games, and come for the shenanigans of RENMAN!!!!! Anyone may choose to enter as few or as many of the challenges as they wish just for the fun of it. A champion may stand in your stead for a single competition if you are competing for the overall title of Renman, but you must compete in all of the other competitions. So the challenge goes out to all in this glorious Kingdom. Send us your men and women of the Renaissance and see who will survive the day to be one among few, the Renaissance Man/Woman of A.S. 47. Note that Baron Wilhelus will also be unearthing one of the most diabolical game challenges ever created by the mind of Master Yehudah. Those who remember please share your experiences with those too new to know the madness of musical chairs gaming. A special prize will be awaiting the victor! Directions: in general-take your best route to I17 and the Cactus exit and head West. The site is just West of the cross-roads of 67th Avenue and Cactus. Site opens at 10 am and continues until 5:30, courts are at their Excellencies whim, while competitions will run all day long. Please bring your own lunch; there will be maps to local nearby food establishments. Site fee is $10 for members, $15 for non members, youth 17 and under free. The site is dry. Smoking permitted 50 feet from entrance. No pets are permitted. If any further information is needed please contact the co-autocrat Baron Master Wil-helus le Casse, quasimortal@cox.net
