INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

Australia's landmass is 7,617,930 square kilometres surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans and separated from Asia by the Arafuraa and Timor seas. Australia is often called the “island continent”. It’s huge!

The Rainforest

The rainforest

• North-eastern Australia is very diverse because it is full of very different ecosystems: coral reefs,

sea grass, mangroves, beaches, rocky shores, rain forest… The terrestrial part of north-eastern

Queensland is known as the 'Wet Tropic', with one of Australia's most beautiful towns, Cairns,

at its centre. The 'Wet Tropic' has Australia's highest rainfall and supports the continent's

main tropical rainforest

The great barrier reef (Seen from the sky)

The Great barrier reef

The reef is scattered with beautiful islands and idyllic coral cays. The Great Barrier Reef system consists of more than 3000 reefs

which range in size from 1 hectare to over 10,000 hectares in area.

Mount Augustus

Mount Augustus stands 1105 m above sea level. Mount Augustus is widely claimed to be the “world's largest monolith”, but it is not scientifically proved. Its rival is Uluru another claimant for the title.

Mount Augustus is here.

In the South-East of Australia there are often forest fires because

the weather is hot and dry.
