Dear Parents/ caregivers,
As Term 1 draws to a close, I
would like to thank all teachers,
parents and students for a great
start to the 2017 academic year.
During this term, staff have
emphasized the importance of
students accepting responsibility
for their learning. Our teachers
have worked with dedication to
assist and motivate students
achieve to the best of their
abilities.
Thank you to all parents and
students for their great efforts
and support of our college’s
uniform policy. Almost all
s tu d e n t s a r e p r e se n t i n g
themselves in full school uniform
each day.
Recently, we celebrated Harmony
Day. It was a wonderful way to
celebrate our cultural diversity,
spreading the message that
everybody belongs. Our students
also presented well by sending a
strong message of zero tolerance
to bullying and violence.
Our college takes a strong stand
against bullying and violence.
Students are encouraged to treat
each other courteously and
respectfully, both in class and
during their break times.
Term 2 will soon be upon us with
NAPLAN tests.

Oh ! My Lord
Advance me in
knowledge
Thank you to staff and
students for your
excellent work. You
h a v e e a r n e d a
well-deserved holiday.
The college will reopen
on Tuesday 18th April
2017. I would like to
wish you all a safe and
relaxing period. I look
forward to Term 2,
Insha’Allah, to ensure
our students have the
very best learning op-
portunities.
Mariam Banwa,
NAPLAN Test Preparation
Preparation for the year 3, 5, 7
and 9 Literacy and Numeracy
tests are well underway. The
college has made a decision not
to teach to the tests, however,
our teachers will familiarise
their students with the
NAPLAN format and types of
questions. This will help ensure
that the results achieved will be
more accurate, meaningful and
useful. It is important to
remember that students are not
expected to do exceptionally
well, but are only competing
against the results they
achieved when they did the test
two years ago. This will help
determine their level of learning
growth over this time. The
NAPLAN tests wi l l be
conducted on 9th, 10th and 11th
May. More details will be sent
out early next term.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
This week, the primary school
teachers have been conducting
parent/teacher interviews to
discuss student’s performance
and provide feedback for future
growth. My thanks to all those
parents who attended. I also
encourage every parent to
attend an interview so that they
can address any concerns they
may have. If you could not make
it this time, please contact your
child’s teacher for an alternative
appointment.

Message from Year 1

Asalamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barkatahu.
As we are nearing the end of Term 1, our Year One
students have been reflecting upon the exciting
learning journey we embarked upon! So much has
happened this term both within the classroom and
beyond. From swimming, to the Sand Safari
excursion, to Harmony Day celebrations, the
excitement of Family Fun Night, professionally
coached tennis sessions, weekly extra-curricular
activities and even a visit from the Fire Department!
What a jam-packed term it has been!
All of these stimulating, hands-on activities have
resulted in a classroom full of young children who are
highly engaged and eager to learn! It certainly has
given us so much to discuss, study, absorb and
discover. Daily writing is so easily inspired by all the
adventures we have embarked upon. The Sand Safari
made learning shapes in Mathematics so much more
engaging too! Harmony Day linked in perfectly with
our understanding of world celebrations and the
significance of particular events throughout history.
Even the excitement of the fire truck visit helped us
to understand pressing issues relating to our own
personal safety.
However, evidence of just how much worldly
knowledge our students maintain became most
apparent throughout our Biological Sciences unit.
Beginning with simple observations of our
vegetable garden and immediate surroundings,
students developed a strong understanding of the
parts of a plant and its functions, as well as what it
needs in order to grow and survive. We were really
grateful to Brother Ahmet who took the time to
help us develop a better understanding of our
chickens, goats and sheep. We were amazed to
discover that a chicken’s wattle (the funny, red,
jiggly bit under its beak) helps to keep our chickens
cool (in a temperature related sense of course)!
From then on, the children launched themselves
into a student-led inquiry into the parts and
functions of a variety of animals including spiders,
bats, birds, sharks and whales! We even learnt to
compare like animals on a Venn diagram.
At such a young age, the little people of Year One
truly have set themselves an extraordinarily high
standard. I cannot wait to see where learning and
inquiry will take us in Term 2!

News from Years 3

The Year 3’s have been extremely busy this term
and some exciting learning has taken place. This
term we have focused on a variety of topics. In
science the students learnt about living and
non-living things. As an end of the term
assessment students were required to research on
a living thing of their choice, create a poster and
present it to the class. The students worked hard
and diligently on their research and enjoyed
discovering new things about their living thing.
In HASS students created an art and video
presentation to represent 1 out of the 19 World
Heritage Sites that are located in Australia.
In English and Math’s we have been working on a
variety of strategies to enhance the students
learning and skills. They enjoy competing with
each other on their multiplication to make their
way up the multiplication ladder. We play a
variety of spelling and English games that
engage students learning and enhance their
skills.
The students in year 3 have also been busy
enhancing their creativity by being involved in a
variety of performing arts. On Harmony Day the
students composed and performed a rap song
about what harmony day means to them. We
were also delighted to be invited by the
Multicultural Families Organization to this
year’s Women’s Day Celebration to perform the
national anthem.
They did a wonderful job representing our school
and sang beautifully. They even got a little surprise
and were given a tour of the TAFE College which
they thoroughly enjoyed. Overall we have had a
very eventful Term 1 from guest speakers, to
performances, to swimming & Tennis and all of the
many things we do in the classroom. The students
and I are both exciting about the holidays but are
already looking forward to the new learning that
will take place in Term 2.

High School—Maths / Science
Assalamu alaikum Wr Wb,
Dear parents / caregivers
During term one, the IB theme was “Belonging”.
Students in Year 7 and 8 studied topics in biology
that required grouping of organisms into categories
that they belong to based on their characteristics i.e.
Taxonomy. Students studied the five kingdoms and
were required to complete an assignment on an
extinct or endangered animal as well as an animal
mentioned in the Quran. In the inquiry based
assignment, it was expected that students incorporate
their animal’s food web, habitat and effects both
natural and human that has resulted in the animal’s
decline. They were expected to come up with an
awareness program for their endangered animal, or
suggest ways their extinct animal could be saved.
This required them to discuss topics on climate
change and global warming, poaching, pollution and
the importance of protecting these organisms.
In Year 9 individual students were assigned a body
system to research and teach to the rest of the class.
Students spent many weeks preparing for this and
their hard work definitely showed in the high quality
presentations. Year 10 students did genetics and
researched how genes control physical traits as well
as different types of gene technologies that are used
today.
Term one of Maths got off to an intense start with
Year 7 and 8 revising skills in numeracy,
multiplication and division. The class routine is to
begin each week with a weekly quick quiz that
checks their mental calculation. This term’s focus
was on Number and Place Value, and topics such as
factor trees, integers and fractions were done. The
maths test in Week 5 test was met with full
attendance and positivity from all students, and
those who studied hard performed extremely well.
Year 9 and 10 covered algebra where they
investigated patterns and relationships with direct
and indirect proportion, how to represent these
graphically, and then we moved onto algebraic skills
involving index laws, expansion and factorisation.
Maths and Science are subjects that are no longer
done individually. In class, students are all expected
to work in groups to carry out investigations or
experiments. By doing so, they are able to gain skills
in communication, problem solving, and conflict
resolution. Experiments such as investigating
number patterns, or looking at specimens and dis-
cussing their characteristics enhance their scientific
literacy and inquiry, which will be a strong theme
throughout the year.
