Automotive Design Portfolio - Aaron McTurk

Who:Hi there!

My name is Aaron McTurk, Welcome to my portfolio for 2012.

I was born and raised in Tauranga, New Zealand and have studied at Massey Universtiy in Auckland. I’ve had a strong interest in cars from a young age and am always interested in how something is made and assembled.

Why:

My design philosophy is pretty sim-ple; Form follows function follows fun. What’s the point of having a good looking vehicle or object if it doesn’t work or isn’t fun to use?

My ultimate goal is to work for Mat-tel’s Hot Wheels, designing a new vehicle every week would be a great challenge, or running my own company specialising in kit car design and manufacturing.

Inspired by the legend...1Simplify, then add lightness

That’s the motto of Colin Chapman and his Lotus 7, the original kit car thatis still the benchmark for performance and style.

The Escapade Sports car is a modern take on Chapman’s idea, creating a low cost, light weight fun car that can be built at home and driven anywhere.

Target user:- Male, 30 - 55 years old- Strong interest in mechanics and vehicles- Races at local track on weekends- Some expendable income to spend on a second car

2The thrill of an open road.To fulfil the promise of providing the ultimate driving experience, the Escapade was designed around several core ideas:

- Less power, more fun.

- Low, open and loud for the complete immersive experience.

- Wearing in, rather than wearing out.

- Form follows Function follows Fun.

By focusing on these ideas, the Escapade manages to capture the ultimate driving experience in an unique and immersive way.

Upgrade

Straight from the factory, custom made to your specifications. Your engine, your paint, your car.

Designed to be easily built up over a few weekends, The Escapade can be assembled by anyone with a basic mechanical knowledge

Simply get in and drive, the reliable drivetrain means less time repairing and more time driving. The Escapade’s light weight and peppy drivetrain means a fun drive everytime the ignition is turned

Modular design means new suspension, body panels and engines are a direct swap, adding to and expanding the whole ownership experience

9 Wear it in, not out.Multiple layers of paint that will wear through over time.

Side panels that deflect debris from the driver and create unique patterns.

Black painted chassis will reveal aluminium with scratches and chips.

Skid pan under car protects driver, fuel tank and engine components.

10Simple and uncluttered dash panel allow maximum driving focus.

Lift up section improves access and creates a cockpit-like environment.

Classic materials such as Leather and Cherry age well and create an unique interior aesthetic.

Butterfly steering wheel increases space and adds unique driving experience.

11Build it your way.

The Isetta O2 by BMW is a smart city car designed as a homage to the 1957 Iso Isetta, BMW’s original micro-car.

Utilising innovative Di Petro Air engine technology, the Isetta O2 achieves 90% efficiency with pure oxygen being the only by-product.

The Isetta O2 seats three adults comfortably using a central drivers position and angled passenger seats to make the most of the small footprint.Blending old and new influences, the Isetta O2 is the perfect homage to BMW’s first micro car.

Light, Fast and Barely Legal.15 The Oakley SwitchBlade.

Designed to match sportswear manufacturer Oakley’s design language, The Oakley SwitchBlade is a Motard style motorbike that infuses Oakley’s core principles into its design.

With a CNC cut aluminium chassis powered by a 500CC single cylinder engine, the SwitchBlade is light and nimble, perfect for carving up city streets and dusty back roads alike.

With interchangeable grips, seat and tank cover, the SwitchBlade can be customised to match the owner’s personality,

17Project ZEDProject ZED started life as a Toyota MR2...

...And has become an unique sports car capable of taking on the best the factories have to offer.

My role for this project is to refine the existing design and advise on the finishes and details that will make this one-off car stand out even more.
