DYERVILLE GIANT—Within Humboldt Redwoods StatePark, along the Founders Grove naturetrail, are two special examples of themany giant redwoods found near theSouth Fork of the Eel River. TheFounders Tree was dedicated to thosewho led the drive to establish the“Save-the-Redwoods League”. TheDyerville Giant was recognized as the“Champion” Coast Redwood as certi-fied by the American ForestryAssociation until it fell on March 24,1991. Before it fell, it was at least 362feet tall (estimates from two differentsources measured it at 370 feet after itfell). That is 200 feet taller than NiagaraFalls or comparable to a 30-story build-ing. It is also 17 feet in diameter and 52feet in circumference. It probablyweighs over 1,000,000 pounds.
