Contents

We, the editorial team of RAC Swoyambhu proudly present to you the

first subscription of our semi-yearly bulletin (Bajra) for the year 2013.

RAC swayambhu has always believed in being involved in positive initiations toward social change. For all of us Rotaract all along has not just been a part of our life but way of life. This year as our family has extended with enthusiastic and determined new members, we are moving ahead on a progressive note. Hopefully. this fresh addition will allow all our four avenues to strengthen individually.

In these pages our team has tried to incorporate our efforts in different purposeful events as well as participation in different fellowship programs. The moments captured in this bulletin are glimpses of our memorable journey throughout the year.

We would like to thank all of our members for equally participating in all the events. Also, special thanks to our president Rtr Rajiv Lama and Rtr Samten Gurung for their support and help without which the release of the semi-bulletin would not have been possible.

Lastly, we as editorial team have worked hard and tried to present this bulletin as a reflection of RAC Swayambhu without any errors. However, We are only human to make mistakes. Hence, we hope our readers consider it being our first attempt. We will make an effort to improve more in the future.

Together we learn, be and conquer

Dear Rotaract Leaders, Success and excellence are defined different with the difference in per-son and thoughts, despite that once should never discontinue challenging their own performance and limit. For youthful minds in order to be tamed and widen, they need consign and resource to inflate. Rotaract has given me and many youths around the globe this horizon to learn, share, believe and prove myself. I urge you to do the same if you are aiming to stand out and never the less know the different sides of life which means to serve and make people around you smile. Spread smiles and help people to help yourself develop as well as evolve into an able person, son, citizen or human being. My best wishes for your journey to self-exploration and expansion. Sky is not the limit. You are limitless. Stay positive, stay healthy.

Dear Rotaractors of RAC Swoyambhu Namaste!!

I take this pleasure to wish you Happy New Year 2014 and Happy Rotary Awareness Month, This is the month for us to consider how our Rotary values – and our own actions – influence public perceptions of Rotary. Rotary’s strategic plan outlines five core values that define and guide Rotary family as we chart a course into our second century of service. Service is our first value, as it should be. The focus of service is reflected in our primary motto, Service Above Self. We have the potential to create better, safer, and healthier communities, one project at a time. Fellowship is the reason Rotary was founded over 100 years ago and has been our Moto, Fellowship Through Service. The friendship, the camaraderie, and the wonderful sense of doing something good together is what keeps us all looking forward to our Rotary meetings week after week. Diversity is an aspect of Rotary that becomes more important with every passing year. Just realize the background of different Rotaractors in your club, the diversity they bring is evident of the same. Integrity is fundamental to the organization’s identity. Every one of us is a guardian of the reputation that generations of Rotarians and Rotaractors have worked to build. When we maintain the highest ethical standards in all of our dealings, we strengthen the trust that allows us to serve more effectively. Leadership, the fifth, and final, core vale. Each of us must remember, with our every action, that we are part of Rotary. When we are chosen to become a part of Rotary, and when we choose to accept that honor, we take it upon ourselves to become representatives of the entire organization. When we are known as Rotaractors, then everything we do reflects upon us all. By living by our core values and committing to Service Above Self, we build a stronger Rotary and a better world for all. Lets Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community. Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotaractor has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring. More over spread information about the five core values among Rotaractors. The beginning of a new year is a good opportunity to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year.

It is a proud moment for me to have our club’s semi-yearly bulletin released. I feel grateful for this opportunity to share my feelings through words in this auspicious occasion. I would like to praise the Editorial Team for their wonderful concept and efforts.

As an individual I believed myself to be someone capable of serving and developing a community. Hence, Rotaract has given me that platform to serve people in need and be a part of the positive development. Being a Rotaractor is synonymous to serving the community with all your heart. In my journey as a Rotaractor all the hard work in different initiation has ended up giving me immense joy and self satisfaction. This very fact pushes me to move ahead and achieve more.

Apart from it, as a rotaractor we get the opportunity to acquire knowledge, learning from every circumstance and people who come together from different parts of life has always been an exhilarating experience. Developing and sharpening your skill in a whole new dimension are always an added value to your character that defines you. Several opportunities during different programs widen our imagination; help pursuing good habits; put it in actions that lead us to be a better human being. My experience as a Rotaractor till date is worthwhile to me.

A lot to learn, much to experience, more to share and much to travel in this wonderful journey. We ought to achieve everything on our way TOGETHER being the change we seek inside out.

That Drunken Man’s Dream -Rtr Salina Shahi

I was dead asleep when my mobile started buzzing like crazy out of nowhere. For first two times, I tried avoiding it as I could hardly comeback to consciousness. But it wouldn’t stop ringing. So, I gave up and pressed the answer button. As soon as I put the mobile to my ear, a voice almost jumped out of it, “What kind of a jerk are you? How in the hell can you leave me alone when you know I’m totally wasted? Do you know how I got home?” I could not believe my ears. I looked at the number and it was of nobody I knew. I was irritated and yelled back, “Excuse me, who do you think you are shouting at and who the freaking hell are you to shout at me?” There was silence for few seconds and then the man replied,” Well I definitely didn’t think it was you lady. I must have dialed a wrong number.”And then, he just hung up the phone. For a moment I was taken aback,” what kind of manner-less guy was he, does not even have the courtesy to apologize. But I was least bothered by him to have affected my sleep anymore.

After 10-15 minutes of struggle, as I was almost asleep my mobile buzzed again. It felt like it was buzzing even louder this time. I looked at the screen and it was the same stranger’s number. I pressed the red button and ignored the call. Ten seconds later it rang again. Had I not to be dependent for a wakeup call from my friend, I could have switched off my mobile and ignored him but it wasn’t worth the risk. Annoyed, I received the call but before I could utter the outburst of my irritation, the voice on the other side replied,” well, you must have thought it was rather rude of me to not apologize, right Miss? I swear if I were sober I would have never acted this way.” Still only half conscious, I think, “How did he know what I was thinking?” and answered with a pitched tone,” Well, it is rude to disturb a stranger in the middle of the night and shout for no reason. Also, it is even ruder to keep disturbing having realized that the number dialed was a wrong one.” The voice replied, “Wooh!!! Someone seems really pissed off but I guess I have apologized for that and it’s not like I did it intentionally. Moreover, everyone is not as lucky as you to have sound sleep, right?” The bluntness of the voice was only making me more upset. What the hell! Who

does he think he is? First he calls me, shouts at me, disturbs me again and now he’s being judgmental just because I’m trying to sleep? “Mister, I don’t know who you think you are but don’t you dare judge me. What are you, a psychiatrist now?”

The reply from the other side wasn’t quick as earlier but the voice seemed calmer. “Listen lady! I didn’t mean to disturb you in the first place it just happened to be so. It was a silly mistake, alright. Mistake happens right? Miss, don’t mind me asking you but haven’t you made any mistake ever? I was in no mood of playing Q/A, so I tried wrapping it up as quickly as I could, “ok I get it, it was a mistake and maybe I overreacted, now let me sleep.” But before I could end the call the voice continued, “Miss you did not answer my question, haven’t you ever made any mistake?” Seeing no way out, I bluntly said, “Yes, I have made mistakes, a lot of them.” “Well,” he muttered, “Then have you apologized for all of them? And were you always forgiven?” “No.” I said. He stammered as he continued, “It is sad right, how your few mistakes haunt you all your life. I wish I could apologize for all of them. Today, if I still had a choice, I would do that, I would apologize to each of them. Then at least I wouldn’t have disturbed a stranger in the middle of the night.”

As much as I thought I was trying to avoid this conversation, I was somehow getting into it. My sleep had gone out with the wind a while ago and I was interested to know more about the man whose voice in some stranger way intrigued me, lured me into a want for a conversation. Hence, I couldn’t help myself asking, “Did you do something wrong to someone?” I did regret it as soon as I asked but the voice on the other end seemed indifferent to my curiosity. He plainly answered, “Yes Miss, I guess to everyone I love- well, most of them.” Earlier I was only cursing myself for not turning off my phone, now I was ridiculed for having gotten into what seemed like a never ending conversation. I had nothing to say since I was thinking of ways to undo the trouble I just created. But the man hardly noticed my silence and continued, “You know, I have always been a bit of an egoist. My life always had options but for a man as stubborn as me I only chose what I thought would work. I have very clearly proved that I just am a failure all along. Disappointingly, I had to lose a lot of loved ones before I actually realized where I stood.”

BAJRA 9

To this, I said, “well if they actually love you, they will always forgive you. As you said earlier, just ask for forgiveness and you can undo things with an apology, right? “No miss, I cannot,” yelled the voice on the other side, “It’s not that they will not forgive me, it is just that I will never accept my mistakes once I am sober. I don’t want to be the first one to tell myself that I was stupid and a failure. And what, undo things? Right! As if that would have solved the problem. If I could undo things, I wouldn’t ignore my mom’s call so much; I would listen to my dad whenever he tries to correct me. I would never have let go of the girl who loved me more than myself. I would admit that I was not happy just earning money. I would hurt my ego to bring them all back into my life. If only I could undo things, Miss.

The voice on the other side was gradually sounding human to me. I was no more irritated with it, I rather sympathized. I could feel how sad and low he might have felt but all I could do to comfort him was be silent. The voice seemed unaffected with my silence and continued again, “You know what my dad used to say… never stop doing things that makes you happy, even better list them out so that you never forget them. I did make a list- playing football, listening to Curt Cobain songs and eating a lot. Back then, it was easy to be happy. But as I grew up my list changed and I started believing that money, success and women would make me happier. Well, it does make me happy but then it’s not easy always having those things. What he didn’t teach me was parallel with happiness came struggle and failure. That is why I am learning things the hard way. I don’t blame him though; I just blame my ego, of which I just cannot let go. Because now, at this moment I am everything but happy and I have no one to tell this to except for a stranger who probably thinks I am just a crazy drunkard. Right then, before I could tell him, that he was wrong to think so- the phone got disconnected.

I waited for sometime- for him to call again, but he did not. I thought of calling him too but it seemed like a crazy idea and I quit pursuing it. I could not sleep for the rest of the night.

All that the voice said kept me awake with questions and realization that made me more helpless. To me, that drunken man was the inner voice of every human being. I was one of them- insecure with their imperfections, uncomfortable with their loss, broken

every time they fall and hopeless with faith they had. That drunken man was a human being not trying to pretend. The consciousness that we can never overcome our failure and fears until we actually learn to deal with it, hit me then. It was then that I learned that truth is never bitter it is rather ignorant. The voice kept reminding me of our incapabilities to face the fear assuming the consequences. I suddenly felt hollow inside knowing how that fear kept me away from my true self and from the ones that are familiar with the real me. It is sad that we choose to live in fear as someone else when in reality we only dream of being who we truly reflect as an individual. May be there will come a day when we will live that dream without pretence and thus we will not have to depend on any liquor or stranger just to exist in true sense…someday.

MY FIRST RYLA EXPERIENCE - Rtr. Tsering Gyalmo Having never been involved in RYLA before and not even knowing what it was until about a month ago, I really didn’t know exactly what to expect. I was extremely excited, but as the event got nearer I became nervous since no one else from my club would be attending. Holding my breath anxiously, I strolled up to the Rotary hall, Thapathali where we were to gather for the registration. Everyone was huddled up in groups talking and my heart sank. I knew it would be awkward to barge into a group uninvited, but before I had chance to think about it anymore, a couple of girls were already walking to me. I wanted to cry! But not because I was sad or scared. I wanted to cry because I was relieved. I knew them from a leadership training seminar I attended just a few days before the RYLA. No amount of words could describe how relieved I felt there. They did their best to make me feel welcomed and that’s when I knew that this RYLA would be absolutely unforgettable. Rotary Inter-national District 3292 (Nepal and Bhutan) organized RYLA 2013 with the theme “Awak-ening Youth” from 24-27 May 2013 at the Agricultural Development Bank central training insti-tute at Bode, Bhaktapur.. I participated in this program with 51 other rotaractors from across the nation in an atmosphere full of fiery spirits. We all got really close through various games, meals and chats. Throughout the four consecutive days, the program offered us various work-shops facilitated by internationally acclaimed dignitaries like Ranjit Acharya, Hare Ram Bhatta, Sujeev Shakya and so forth. We prac-ticed Tai chi (an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits) every morning, went for hik-ing nearby pottery village, took part in var-ious team building activities and expressed the reflections of the day in the forms of Debate session. At the last day evening, we had drama competition among the different groups we were divided to. Despite the limitation of

time and resources, all the teams were able to per-form really good. I personally feel that the entire program was very beneficial while also allowing us to have fun. The opportunity to listen to the amaz-ing speakers and meet such inspiring youths from across the regions really opened my mind to all the possibilities that await me. It gave me the opti-mism and allowed me to have faith in myself. RYLA allowed me to see how a small group of motivated people can make a difference in the society and gave me the push to work for it. It taught me how

to bond with new people and become more actively involved. “It didn’t matter where you were from, what you believe in, what your goals were, or how talented you were. It didn’t change the

fact that we were all there to learn, not just how to lead, but also how to connect with others, starting with each other. I know that during my time there, I have made lifelong friends that I trust complete-ly.” Every picture of the RYLA is clearly staying in my mind and even though it has been almost 8 months now, it seems as if that had happened just yesterday.............. RYLA Bode 2013, was a once in a lifetime experience.

Rotaract Club of Swoyambhu’s President Rajiv Lama walks his Rotaract talk by promoting peace in his profession as a team leader/facilitator of the Children’s World Peace Organization.

Children’s World Peace Organization is a non-profit organization that empowers children world-wide to transform their challenging emotions and conflicts into healthy mutual songs, dances, various activities and arts. Students move to learn beyond prejudice and assumption to realize their potential, their connection to each other, and the global human family. In Nepal the organi-zation is registered as CPON (Children Peace Organization Nepal)

“We facilitate a proven Peace Education Program in 9 schools to 1500+ primary-aged students in order to realize peace in our time,” said Lama. “The schools that are receiving our free program in each class one hour a week have told us that formerly violent schools have become peaceful learning centers in as few as eight to 11 weeks,” continued Lama.

“In the future, we will have curriculum for all eight grades of primary school and will be offering training for teachers, school directors, parents, and community members so that students will feel completely supported to create sustainable peace,” continued Lama.

“Our club’s theme is Together We Be the Change. Our club’s motto is Serving Humankind with the Vision of Peace. I am very fortunate to be able to blend my professional life’s goals with my Rotaract goals to make a measurable difference in the world,” concluded Lama.

SAP Corner

Rotaract club of Swoyambhu has been operat-ing in the full course of running its Special Area Project. Helpless Colony is a home for twenty children. They range in age from 5-1 9; and is lo-cated in Pasikot, Budhanilkantha. The orphanage is taken care by a single woman, Mrs. Nanu Rai. Our mission is to improve the living and health condition of the orphans and offer them better educational opportunities.

We have been paying visits and organizing var-ious programs (cloth donation, kwaati purnima, educational project) in the orphanage. In addi-tion to that, we have started a campaign with the slogan “ Rupaiya dui ujjwal Bhawishyako laagi “ which aims to collect Rs. 2 from all the members on a daily basis.

The campaign has been running for over six months now. We believe that this sum collected will help in the scholarship for the children in order to achieve their further education. The club will continue to be actively involved in support-ing the orphanage.

TAKE ACTION: If you are willing to contrib-ute to these orphans, you can contact any of the members of the club. Every contribution you make is a miracle to them.

Your generosity will play a big role in their lives. Be generous, be a miracle! Even 1 rupee makes a difference!Rtr Sonam Wangmo (Treasurer)
