BASIN trans Atlantic cruise with RV GO Sars

EURO-BASIN cruise planning meeting 29-30 September, London

Geir Huse & Webjørn Melle

RV METEOR ‘Deep Convection’ Cruise 2012 EURO-BASIN Cruise Programme, 29-30 Sep 2011

Overall research questionsEcosystem structure and functioning: How are ocean basins in the North Atlantic structured and, what are the key drivers affecting them?

Comparative approach: What are the commonalities and differences in the structure and functioning of the Subpolar gyre, the Labrador, Irminger and Nordic Seas?

Connectivity: What are the major oceanographic and biological interconnections between these basins?

Ecosystem effects of climate variability and change: How is the distribution of water masses in the different basins and how does it affect the species distribution?

Work content1. Continuous acoustic mapping of pelagic nekton and

zooplankton with keel based and towed platforms2. Station sampling with:

• Trawls• Plankton nets• Acoustics/optics

3. Onboard process studies of zooplankton4. Opportunistic sampling (by large midwater trawl)5. Seabird and cetacean studies.

1. Sightings, and if possible tagging.2. Passive acoustics

• Active acoustics for ecological and predator-prey interactions

• Physical oceanography• CTD, ADCP• Bathymetry mapping.

• Conceptual ecosystem modelling.

Platform Instruments, sensors and software Vessel acoustics

EK60 –6 frequencies Multi-beam EM300 EM1002 Sonar SP70 Sonar SM2000 Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), 75 and 150 kHz LADCP – ADCP on CTD Acoustic target strength transducer Temperature, salinity, oxygen and fluorescence (surface sensors) Topas – parametric sonar

Towed systems MESSOR (EK 60 – 7 frequencies, OPC,++) WEBJØRN?? MUST (EK 60 – 7 frequencies, OPC,++)

Sampling equipment

Big pelagic trawl (Multpelt) to be used for opportunistic sampling of particular targets located acoustically Medium-sized pelagic trawl for routine use (Åkratrål) equipped with multisampler to sample 3 depth strata (3 cod-ends in one tow) Multinet (for sampling mesozooplankton) Macrozooplankton trawl (for sampling large zoopl. and micronekton) Scantrol Deepview: Continuous undulating automatic identification of pelagic resources in trawl

Trawl instrumentation

Scanmar Catch Control systems – height, distance, speed, trawl eye. ITI - Trawl sonar Cameras and housing for use on trawls

Software

LSSS ER60 Korona OASIS – abundance estimation software and vizualisation tool OLEX GNAV

Longline Baited long lines will be used to sample large pelagic piscivorous fish Litter sampling?? Underwater filming

Opportunistic underwater filming and still photos for both scientific and outreach purposes
