The Global Interior Design Standards, designed by SOM, facilitate the creation of a highly performative workplace for BBVA, an international retail banking institution. The standards – implemented with SOM’s interior designs for four BBVA facilities worldwide – convey the company’s core brand ideas while bolstering client services and amplifying opportunities for growth.
The Global Standards are based on the reinterpretation of traditional workplace organization to accommodate the transformation of the BBVA’s operational structure from a hierarchical model to a more horizontal, collaborative organization. This new approach includes a radical transformation to a completely open plan environment, with the incorporation of alternative workplace strategies and innovative programming.
The workplace model contains four primary components, each designed to enhance collaboration, agility, and experience: Individual Work Settings, Collaborative and Confidential Work Settings, Support Spaces, and Business and Client Centers. In addition, the standards put in place a global procurement strategy, which establishes the criteria for global fixtures and finishes in accordance with local manufacturing, installation, and maintenance recommendations. In addition to the general office interior, the standards also direct the design of elevator lobbies, receptions, waiting areas, conference facilities, office areas, and support areas.
The Global Standards take advantage of BBVA’s unique opportunity to revolutionize corporate practices and workplace design across its new global facilities. The standards have been implemented with SOM’s interior design of the BBVA Bancomer Operations Center, BBVA Mexico City Headquarters, and BBVA Centro Tecnológico in Mexico City; and the BBVA Madrid Headquarters in Spain. The guidelines will subsequently be rolled out to other corporate locations, as opportunities present themselves for development and renovation.

The 154,000-square-meter Operations Center, designed by SOM, consolidates and repositions BBVA Bancomer’s physical presence in Mexico City. Rising 132 meters, the state-of-the-art, environmentally sustainable building raises the bar for new commercial projects in Mexico’s capital and elevates the profile of BBVA Bancomer in Latin America. The facility reimagines BBVA’s work environment for the 21st century, with the interior programming based on the larger Global Interior Design Standards that SOM created to convey the company’s core brand ideas.

The BBVA Mexico City Headquarters is a 235-meter-tall office tower with interior design by SOM. The interior programming of the Mexico City Headquarters embodies the principles of SOM’s Global Interior Design Standards through flexible working environments, highly transparent conference rooms and break-out areas, and a variety of workplace amenities, including a double-height cafeteria and dining area. The result is a design that promotes a sense of community and interaction between staff, across 79,000 square meters of interior office space. The building’s architecture is by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Legorreta + Legorreta.

BBVA Centro Tecnológico is a highly secure data center and office complex designed by SOM that provides critical information technology support for the bank’s operations worldwide. The 31,025-square-meter center is designed to the highest levels of safety and redundancy – with progressive collapse design strategies and a foundation isolator beneath the data center building to protect against seismic events. As part of SOM’s total reimagination of the BBVA global offices, the data center interiors are organized in an open plan configuration. The facility features a business center, dining amenities, and an outdoor terrace.

The BBVA Madrid Headquarters sits on a 59,000-square-foot site located on the northern periphery of the city. The design features a network of passages, courtyards, and gardens that weave between the campus’ three-story structures. SOM’s interior design maintains the collaborative nature of the campus with highly transparent glass-walled offices and conference rooms that allow daylight deep into the space. The high level of visibility promoted between work spaces emphasizes the horizontal organization of the company, a core tenant of SOM’s Global Interior Design Stardands developed for BBVA. The headquarter’s architecture is by Herzog & de Meuron.
