Treating the Uncurable
Type 1 diabetes affects millions of people in America.
Unfortunately, we have no known cure. For a while
now, the best treatment came in the form of a blood
glucose monitor and separate insulin pump. Diabetics
check their blood sugar, and when it is low, they
deliver the necessary amount of insulin. The big
problem with that method is that the two devices can't
communicate with each other, which can make
monitoring and delivery difficult during certain times,
like exercise.
ASOLUTION?
A Step in the Right Direction
Thanks the the dedication of diabetes researchers,
there are several solutions on the horizon. Hopefully,
diabetes will be easier and safer to manage.
MEDTRONICBIONICPANCREAS
Uses a "hybrid closed loop" consisting of an
autonomous blood glucose monitor and insulin pump
to manage blood sugar.
User is responsible for adjusting insulin doses at
meals
Proven to be safe and effective.
UVA/HARVARDCLINICAL TRIAL
This trial followed 240 patients in the US and Europe
Researchers are testing a monitoring system that
consists of an insulin pump, continuous glucose
monitor, and smartphone app.
The app uses an algorithm to tell how much insulin
the pump should administer
BETA BIONICSMONITOR
Instead of administering insulin in reaction to
glucose levels, this system monitors insulin and the
hormone glucagon
This method should allow for more accurate blood
sugar readings
Clinical trials are planned to start in 2017
