We can think of severalreasons you should
stop procrastinating
(1) Mammograms can detect lumps
in the breast long before they are
discernible any other way (2) Properly
performed by trained technicians it
takes only minutes from your day (3) Itrsquos covered by most insurance plans
but if yours doesnrsquot special nancial
arrangements can usually be made
(4) It can save your life
We can think of several more reasonswhy women 35 and older should
have regular mammograms But we

Studies have been conducted by various
researchers studying the link between
specific food items and their ability to
fight breast cancerAccording to a study published last
May in Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment dieting may decrease chances
for metastases in triple negative breastcancers by strengthening the tissue sur-
rounding the tumor The study discovered
when mice models of triple negative
cancer were fed 30 percent less than what
they ate when given free access to foodthe cancer cells decreased their produc-
tion of microRNAs 17 and 20 MicroRNAswere decreased most when mice were
treated with both radiation and caloric
restrictions
A clinical trial known as PREDIMEDalso reviewed the affects a version of the
Mediterranean diet heavy with extra
virgin olive oil has on reducing the risk
of breast cancer The clinical trial com-pared the version of the Mediterranean
diet with women who simply reduced the
overall amount of fat in their dietsThe results of the study suggested a
benefit of a Mediterranean diet supple-
mented with extra-virgin olive oil in the
primary prevention of breast cancerSusan P Wheatlake Cancer Center Di-
etician Debra Jenson said itrsquos important
breast cancer patients practice a diet that
can assist in maintaining their weightldquoWith chemotherapy your medications
will be determined by your weightrdquo Jen-
son said ldquoAlso when you lose weight rap-
idly you are also losing muscle Maintain-ing muscle mass can reduce side effects
of treatmentrdquo
She said practicing food safety also isessential in protecting your immune sys-
tem
Jenson said there are a number of cook-
books providing individuals diets andrecipes based on a patientrsquos symptoms
including ldquoWhat to Eat During Cancer
Treatmentrdquo and ldquoThe Essential Cancer
Treatment Nutrition Guide and Cook-
bookrdquoJenson said a well-balanced diet is al-
ways good to keep your body healthy
Cintrin said regular exercise avoiding
cigarettes and tobacco getting adequateamounts of vitamin D and calcium and
drinking little to no alcohol also are
lifestyle changes to reduce your risk ofbreast cancer
He said patients with breast cancer
should always consult with an oncologist
and registered dietician in developing in-

Family History and Genetic Fac-tors If your mother sister fa-ther or child has been diagnosedwith breast or ovarian canceryou have a higher risk of beingdiagnosed with breast cancer inthe future Your risk increases ifyour relative was diagnosed be-fore the age of 50
Personal Health History If youhave been diagnosed withbreast cancer in one breast you
have an increased risk of beingdiagnosed with breast cancer inthe other breast in the futureAlso your risk increases if ab-normal breast cells have beendetected before (such as atypicalhyperplasia lobular carcinomain situ (LCIS) or ductal carcinomain situ (DCIS))
Menstrual and Reproductive His-tory Early menstruation (beforeage 12) late menopause (after55) having your first child at anolder age or never having givenbirth can also increase your riskfor breast cancer

make lumps harder to detectSeveral states have passed lawsrequiring physicians to discloseto women if their mammogramindicates that they have densebreasts so that they are aware ofthis risk Be sure to ask your phy-sician if you have dense breastsand what the implications ofhaving dense breasts are

Studies have been conducted by various
researchers studying the link between
specific food items and their ability to
fight breast cancerAccording to a study published last
May in Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment dieting may decrease chances
for metastases in triple negative breastcancers by strengthening the tissue sur-
rounding the tumor The study discovered
when mice models of triple negative
cancer were fed 30 percent less than what
they ate when given free access to foodthe cancer cells decreased their produc-
tion of microRNAs 17 and 20 MicroRNAswere decreased most when mice were
treated with both radiation and caloric
restrictions
A clinical trial known as PREDIMEDalso reviewed the affects a version of the
Mediterranean diet heavy with extra
virgin olive oil has on reducing the risk
of breast cancer The clinical trial com-pared the version of the Mediterranean
diet with women who simply reduced the
overall amount of fat in their dietsThe results of the study suggested a
benefit of a Mediterranean diet supple-
mented with extra-virgin olive oil in the
primary prevention of breast cancerSusan P Wheatlake Cancer Center Di-

breast cancer patients practice a diet that

including ldquoWhat to Eat During Cancer

ways good to keep your body healthy

cigarettes and tobacco getting adequateamounts of vitamin D and calcium and
drinking little to no alcohol also are
lifestyle changes to reduce your risk ofbreast cancer
He said patients with breast cancer

Gender Breast cancer occursnearly 100 times more often inwomen than in men
Age Two out of three womenwith invasive cancer are diag-nosed after age 55
Race Breast cancer is diagnosedmore often in caucasian womenthan women of other races
Certain Genome Changes Mu-tations in certain genes such asBRCA1 and BRCA2 can increaseyour risk for breast cancer Thisis determined through a genetic
test which you may considertaking if you have a family his-tory of breast cancer Individualswith these gene mutations canpass the gene mutation ontotheir children
Dense Breast Tissue Havingdense breast tissue can increaseyour risk for breast cancer and
make lumps harder to detectSeveral states have passed lawsrequiring physicians to discloseto women if their mammogramindicates that they have densebreasts so that they are aware ofthis risk Be sure to ask your phy-sician if you have dense breastsand what the implications ofhaving dense breasts are

We can think of severalreasons you should
stop procrastinating
(1) Mammograms can detect lumps
in the breast long before they are
discernible any other way (2) Properly
performed by trained technicians it
takes only minutes from your day (3) Itrsquos covered by most insurance plans
but if yours doesnrsquot special nancial
arrangements can usually be made
(4) It can save your life
We can think of several more reasonswhy women 35 and older should
have regular mammograms But we

Studies have been conducted by various
researchers studying the link between
specific food items and their ability to
fight breast cancerAccording to a study published last
May in Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment dieting may decrease chances
for metastases in triple negative breastcancers by strengthening the tissue sur-
rounding the tumor The study discovered
when mice models of triple negative
cancer were fed 30 percent less than what
they ate when given free access to foodthe cancer cells decreased their produc-
tion of microRNAs 17 and 20 MicroRNAswere decreased most when mice were
treated with both radiation and caloric
restrictions
A clinical trial known as PREDIMEDalso reviewed the affects a version of the
Mediterranean diet heavy with extra
virgin olive oil has on reducing the risk
of breast cancer The clinical trial com-pared the version of the Mediterranean
diet with women who simply reduced the
overall amount of fat in their dietsThe results of the study suggested a
benefit of a Mediterranean diet supple-
mented with extra-virgin olive oil in the
primary prevention of breast cancerSusan P Wheatlake Cancer Center Di-
etician Debra Jenson said itrsquos important
breast cancer patients practice a diet that
can assist in maintaining their weightldquoWith chemotherapy your medications
will be determined by your weightrdquo Jen-
son said ldquoAlso when you lose weight rap-
idly you are also losing muscle Maintain-ing muscle mass can reduce side effects
of treatmentrdquo
She said practicing food safety also isessential in protecting your immune sys-
tem
Jenson said there are a number of cook-
books providing individuals diets andrecipes based on a patientrsquos symptoms
including ldquoWhat to Eat During Cancer
Treatmentrdquo and ldquoThe Essential Cancer
Treatment Nutrition Guide and Cook-
bookrdquoJenson said a well-balanced diet is al-
ways good to keep your body healthy
Cintrin said regular exercise avoiding
cigarettes and tobacco getting adequateamounts of vitamin D and calcium and
drinking little to no alcohol also are
lifestyle changes to reduce your risk ofbreast cancer
He said patients with breast cancer
should always consult with an oncologist
and registered dietician in developing in-
dividualized diets and meal plans

Age Two out of three womenwith invasive cancer are diag-nosed after age 55
Race Breast cancer is diagnosedmore often in caucasian womenthan women of other races
Dense Breast Tissue Havingdense breast tissue can increaseyour risk for breast cancer and
make lumps harder to detectSeveral states have passed lawsrequiring physicians to discloseto women if their mammogramindicates that they have densebreasts so that they are aware ofthis risk Be sure to ask your phy-sician if you have dense breastsand what the implications ofhaving dense breasts are

performed by trained technicians it
takes only minutes from your day (3) Itrsquos covered by most insurance plans
but if yours doesnrsquot special nancial
arrangements can usually be made
(4) It can save your life
We can think of several more reasonswhy women 35 and older should
have regular mammograms But we

Studies have been conducted by various
researchers studying the link between
specific food items and their ability to
fight breast cancerAccording to a study published last
May in Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment dieting may decrease chances
for metastases in triple negative breastcancers by strengthening the tissue sur-
rounding the tumor The study discovered
when mice models of triple negative
cancer were fed 30 percent less than what
they ate when given free access to foodthe cancer cells decreased their produc-
tion of microRNAs 17 and 20 MicroRNAswere decreased most when mice were
treated with both radiation and caloric
restrictions
A clinical trial known as PREDIMEDalso reviewed the affects a version of the
Mediterranean diet heavy with extra
virgin olive oil has on reducing the risk
of breast cancer The clinical trial com-pared the version of the Mediterranean
diet with women who simply reduced the
overall amount of fat in their dietsThe results of the study suggested a
benefit of a Mediterranean diet supple-
mented with extra-virgin olive oil in the
primary prevention of breast cancerSusan P Wheatlake Cancer Center Di-
etician Debra Jenson said itrsquos important
breast cancer patients practice a diet that
can assist in maintaining their weightldquoWith chemotherapy your medications
will be determined by your weightrdquo Jen-
son said ldquoAlso when you lose weight rap-
idly you are also losing muscle Maintain-ing muscle mass can reduce side effects
of treatmentrdquo
She said practicing food safety also isessential in protecting your immune sys-
tem
Jenson said there are a number of cook-
books providing individuals diets andrecipes based on a patientrsquos symptoms
including ldquoWhat to Eat During Cancer
Treatmentrdquo and ldquoThe Essential Cancer
Treatment Nutrition Guide and Cook-
bookrdquoJenson said a well-balanced diet is al-
ways good to keep your body healthy
Cintrin said regular exercise avoiding
cigarettes and tobacco getting adequateamounts of vitamin D and calcium and
drinking little to no alcohol also are
lifestyle changes to reduce your risk ofbreast cancer
He said patients with breast cancer
should always consult with an oncologist
and registered dietician in developing in-
dividualized diets and meal plans

have an increased risk of beingdiagnosed with breast cancer inthe other breast in the futureAlso your risk increases if ab-normal breast cells have beendetected before (such as atypicalhyperplasia lobular carcinomain situ (LCIS) or ductal carcinomain situ (DCIS))
Menstrual and Reproductive His-tory Early menstruation (beforeage 12) late menopause (after55) having your first child at anolder age or never having givenbirth can also increase your riskfor breast cancer

Studies have been conducted by various
researchers studying the link between
specific food items and their ability to
fight breast cancerAccording to a study published last
May in Breast Cancer Research and
Treatment dieting may decrease chances
for metastases in triple negative breastcancers by strengthening the tissue sur-
rounding the tumor The study discovered
when mice models of triple negative
cancer were fed 30 percent less than what
they ate when given free access to foodthe cancer cells decreased their produc-
tion of microRNAs 17 and 20 MicroRNAswere decreased most when mice were
treated with both radiation and caloric
restrictions
A clinical trial known as PREDIMEDalso reviewed the affects a version of the
Mediterranean diet heavy with extra
virgin olive oil has on reducing the risk
of breast cancer The clinical trial com-pared the version of the Mediterranean
diet with women who simply reduced the
overall amount of fat in their dietsThe results of the study suggested a
benefit of a Mediterranean diet supple-
mented with extra-virgin olive oil in the
primary prevention of breast cancerSusan P Wheatlake Cancer Center Di-
etician Debra Jenson said itrsquos important
breast cancer patients practice a diet that
can assist in maintaining their weightldquoWith chemotherapy your medications
will be determined by your weightrdquo Jen-
son said ldquoAlso when you lose weight rap-
idly you are also losing muscle Maintain-ing muscle mass can reduce side effects
of treatmentrdquo
She said practicing food safety also isessential in protecting your immune sys-
tem
Jenson said there are a number of cook-
books providing individuals diets andrecipes based on a patientrsquos symptoms
including ldquoWhat to Eat During Cancer
Treatmentrdquo and ldquoThe Essential Cancer
Treatment Nutrition Guide and Cook-
bookrdquoJenson said a well-balanced diet is al-
ways good to keep your body healthy
Cintrin said regular exercise avoiding
cigarettes and tobacco getting adequateamounts of vitamin D and calcium and
drinking little to no alcohol also are
lifestyle changes to reduce your risk ofbreast cancer
He said patients with breast cancer
should always consult with an oncologist
and registered dietician in developing in-
dividualized diets and meal plans
