A Note FromJeanne’s Journal

If you are feeling a littleexhausted this month, I don’tblame you one little bit! 2016 wasa very busy year for us at BelmontVillage! We spent a lot of timehelping our neighbors and friendsthis past year. Some of thehighlights from the past yearincluded our trip this summer tothe Neighborhood FoodPantries-Lutheran Church of theMaster Site, where we were giventhe “Good Neighbor Award.” Wehad all worked so hard to raisemoney for the food pantry withour “Fill a Pot and Feed a Family”flower pot raffle.

In September, we set up thebicycles in the Great Room androde for 12 continuous hours inorder to increase awareness andraise money for Alzheimer’sdisease. Throughout the course ofthe day, we had residents fromAssisted living, Circle of Friendsand both neighborhoods ridingbikes as well as their familymembers, friends and staffmembers. Even the Mayor ofCarol Stream and a Village Trusteecame and joined us in our event.Together we raised more than$800.

We visited local elementaryschools, went to the ButterflyGarden, out to eat at restaurants

and to the theatre. We put on anart show, participated in our veryown “Tour de Belmont” andwatched the productions of ourBelmont Drama Club. We sharedEaster Brunches and ThanksgivingFeasts with so many familymembers and friends who wefilled our first floor entrywayto capacity.

We celebrated the birthday of a109 year old resident and helped aleap year baby celebrate her“19th” birthday. We welcomedmore than 60 new residents to ourcommunity and sadly had to sayfarewell to many, too. You evencelebrated with me this year as Iwelcomed my first grandchild intothis world.

What a year it was! There’s justa little bit of time now to rest andcatch our breath. But please don’ttake too long as we have just asmany exciting times to lookforward to in 2017. And I lookforward to sharing every minutewith you!

On behalf of the entire team atBelmont Village-Geneva Road,Happy New Year to you and yourwonderful members. Thank youfor allowing us the honor to sharein your lives. We look forward toall the magic and wonder that anew year brings.

It is estimated that 60 millionpeople worldwide suffer fromglaucoma, with 4 million living inthe United States alone. ThisJanuary, National GlaucomaAwareness Month, BelmontVillage Senior living wants to helpprevent the progression of thisdebilitating disease byencouraging residents and theirfamilies to have their eyes checkedfor glaucoma.

If glaucoma goes untreated, vision loss will usually occur inthese three stages:

• Blind spots in yourperipheral vision (hazardousfor important activities suchas driving)

• Tunnel vision (loss ofperipheral vision)

• Total blindness (vision lossdue to glaucoma cannot berestored).

According to Glaucoma.org, theeconomic impact of Glaucoma tothe U.S. government is estimatedto be over $1.5 billion annually.

Often referred to as the “sneakthief of sight,” glaucoma is aleading cause of preventableblindness worldwide. The Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention estimates that nearlyhalf of those affected by glaucomado not know they are afflicted.

This staggering statistic is due tothe fact that vision damage is sogradual you may not even noticeit until it has reached an advancedstage. Since there are often nosigns or noticeable symptoms ofglaucoma, we urge everyone tohave regular eye exams to checkfor this disease.

Because the risk for developingglaucoma increases with age, regular vision screenings areimportant. Persons with diabetes,a family history of glaucoma, nearsightedness or who are ofAfrican-American orMexican-American origin are at anincreased risk of the disease andshould therefore be checked morefrequently. An annualophthalmologist eye exam isrecommended.

We urge everyone to make aNew Year’s resolution to care fortheir eyes.
