Benefits of Biosecurity

What are you bringing into the barn?

What is GloGerm™?Since 1968, GloGerm™ has

provided a fun and safe product that casts a revealing glow when exposed to GloGerm™'s U.V. light

To assess the effectiveness of on-farm biosecurity practices

GloGerm™ was used to

simulate disease spread & contamination

at the Arkell Poultry Research Station

in Guelph Ontario

The ExperimentWe all know what good

on-farm biosecurity programs are about:

• washing your hands,

• wearing barn specific clothes & • keeping good records

But how good are we at preventing contamination by

practicing biosecurity?

The Experiment

This project gathered 15 volunteers ranging from

producers to marketing board & CFIA reps

Each participant was asked to perform

multiple biosecurity tasks

GloGerm™ allowed us to observe how well project

volunteers were able

to contain the

“spread of disease”

by using everyday biosecurity techniques

The Experiment

Part 1: Hand Washing

Hand Washing“How Clean are

your hands?”

1. Completely cover hands with GloGerm™ gel

2. Get Picture taken under UV light

3. Wash Hands like you normally would with soap and water

4. Get second picture under UV light to see if there is any residual GloGerm™ still on hands

What’s getting into your barn?

boot covers?

Part 3: Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment“How clean are your street clothes?”

1. Donning – put on personal protective equipment (PPE) – Boots, boot covers, coveralls, hairnets, gloves, masks etc.

2. Get Dirty – Sprinkle GloGerm™ dust on PPE

3. Doffing – Take your dirty barn clothes off without contaminating your street clothes

4. Take a picture under UV light to see if there is any residual GloGerm™ on your street clothes

The Bottom Line•Every time anyone enters your barn, you need to make sure that biosecurity practices are taken seriously and are adhered to.

•Even the most careful participants still did not complete all tasks perfectly.

The Bottom Line

•There are huge potentials everyday for disease to transfer from property to property and it doesn’t take long for disease to spread
