BENGALI N LEVEL FOR SINGAPORE

INTRODUCTION This document provides details of the Normal Level Bengali syllabus for candidates in Singapore. Normal Level Syllabuses are also available in Gujarati, Hindi, Panjabi and Urdu. This syllabus is available in October only.

OBJECTIVES The main objective of the examination is to assess the skills outlined in the Bengali syllabus. On completion of the Bengali course, students would have acquired the following abilities. 1. To carry on a meaningful and effective exchange of ideas with Bengali-knowing persons inside and

outside the school.

2. To read and understand a variety of prose texts for gaining knowledge and pleasure. 3. To develop the capacity to express ideas and feelings in Bengali with imagination and creativity. 4. To enhance the ability to take rational decisions by considering every issue on the basis of reasoning. 5. To take the examination with self-confidence and to be successful by meeting the challenges posed by

developments taking place in the language and the expanding area of the language teaching activities. 6. To acquire adequate knowledge of Bengali to be able to meet one’s needs and activities for one’s own

development. 7. To develop an attitude of appreciating useful ideas and cultural refinement expressed through the

language. 8. To develop respect for one’s own culture through a knowledge of its origins and to develop an attitude

of appreciating other cultures and interacting with people of other cultures. 9. To develop an understanding of and respect for the life-style, philosophy and general behaviour pattern

of the Bengali people. 10. To be introduced to outstanding literary works in Bengali.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS The examination comprises two papers. PAPER 1: Composition (2 hours) (90 marks) The paper consists of two sections, A and B, to be completed in two hours. Section A: Letter (30 marks) Candidates are required to write at least 90 words on one of two topics given. Section B: Essay (60 marks) Candidates are required to write at least 170 words on one of four topics given. PAPER 2: Language Usage and Comprehension (1 hour 30 minutes) (110 marks) Section A: Language Usage (60 marks) Questions set will include Combination/Separation of Words, Idioms, Proverbs and Words in Pairs, Sentence Transformation, Structural Cloze and Vocabulary. Section B: Comprehension (multiple-choice questions) (14 marks) Seven questions based on a prose passage of about 250 words will be set. Section C: Comprehension (open-ended questions) (36 marks) Six questions based on a passage of about 240 words will be set.

URDU N LEVEL FOR SINGAPORE

(Syllabus 3240)

INTRODUCTION This document provides details of the Normal Level Urdu syllabus for candidates in Singapore. Normal Level Syllabuses are also available in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi and Panjabi. This syllabus is available in October only.

OBJECTIVES The main objective of the examination is to assess the skills outlined in the Urdu syllabus. On completion of the Urdu course, students would have acquired the following abilities. 1. To carry on a meaningful and effective exchange of ideas with Urdu-knowing persons inside and

outside the school. 2. To read and understand a variety of prose texts for gaining knowledge and pleasure. 3. To develop the capacity to express ideas and feelings in Urdu with imagination and creativity. 4. To enhance the ability to take rational decisions by considering every issue on the basis of reasoning. 5. To take the examination with self-confidence and to be successful by meeting the challenges posed by

developments taking place in the language and the expanding area of the language teaching activities. 6. To acquire adequate knowledge of Urdu to be able to meet one’s needs and activities for one’s own

development. 7. To develop an attitude of appreciating useful ideas and cultural refinement expressed through the

language. 8. To develop respect for one’s own culture through a knowledge of its origins and to develop an attitude

of appreciating other cultures and interacting with people of other cultures. 9. To develop an understanding of and respect for the life-style, philosophy and general behaviour pattern

of Urdu-speaking people. 10. To be introduced to outstanding literary works in Urdu.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS The examination comprises two papers. PAPER 1: Composition (2 hours) (90 marks) The paper consists of two sections, A and B, to be completed in two hours. Section A: Letter (30 marks) Candidates are required to write at least 90 words on one of two topics given. Section B: Essay (60 marks) Candidates are required to write at least 170 words on one of four topics given. PAPER 2: Language Usage and Comprehension (1 hour 30 minutes) (110 marks) Section A: Language Usage (60 marks) Questions set will include Combination/Separation of Words, Idioms, Proverbs and Words in Pairs, Sentence Transformation, Structural Cloze and Vocabulary. Section B: Comprehension (multiple-choice questions) (14 marks) Seven questions based on a prose passage of about 250 words will be set. Section C: Comprehension (open-ended questions) (36 marks) Six questions based on a passage of about 240 words will be set.
