Thiscomesasnosurpisetoanyonewhohasbeenabletofollowtheincreasingpowerofattraction,whichthetoxinuncommonlyoftenbestowsupontheaddict.Thephenomenonisasundeniableasitsreasonsareconcealed.Onecansurmisethatinthecourseofthealterationswhichthetoxinengenders,italsointerruptsapatternofbehaviorwhichforthemostparthinderstheindividual.Unkindness,fanaticismaboutbeingcorrect,andpharasaismaretraitswhichoneonlyseldomencountersinaddicts.Addtothisasedativeeffectofthetoxin,solongasitspotencylasts,andnottheminutestfactorisabletojustifytheconvinctionthattherecouldbevirtuallynothingsignificantorworthwhileintakingthetoxin.Nowallthiscangiveeventhoseofamoreunassumingnatureasovereigntywhichtheyoriginallydidnotpossess-especiallyintheirvocationalcapacity.Suchastateofmindbecomesespeciallyvaluabletosolitaryindividualsbecauseitmakesthechanges-incharacterandevenphysiognomy-knownnotonlyto
