BIJI JALI (Coix lachryma-jobi L.)

Jali (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) commonly known as Job’s tears, are originally from India and now are native to South East Asia region, such as China, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia. In indonesia, it can be found in Sulawesi, Sumatra, Java island, which have hot or humid climate. This plant grows at 1000 meters above sea level and has 1-2 meters in height (Balitsereal, 2009).

There are 2 kinds of Jali, ma-yuen and monilifer variety.

Ma-yuen used as staple food and formed cylinder with brown, yellow or purple colored.

Monilifer have hard skin with black or grey colored, which used as beads in ornamental purpose, rosarie, and necklace (Balitsereal, 2009).

ACTIVE COMPOUNDS

Jali contains some active compound such as cotoxenolid, coixol, coicin, and some amino acid (leusin, tirosin, lisine, glutamic acid, arginin, and histidin) (Chang et al., 2003).

HEALTH BENEFITS

Cotoxenolid used as anticancer. Jali’s oil also gives some health benefits, such as reducing liver fat accumulation, protecting against viral infection, reducing allergic reaction, and osteoporosis (Chang et al., 2003). In China it is used as traditional medicine and supplementary medical food.

APPLICATION IN FOODS & BEVERAGES

The grain can be polished and milled as flour and used in bakery products.

In Thailand, the seed coat is removed and the sees are consume whole. The seeds also boiled with water to produce beverage products (Cheappensuk, 2006).
