BiographyChristian T. Herbst, born 1970, earned a master’s degree inclassical voice pedagogy from the Mozarteum University,Salzburg,Austria.Duringhiscareerasvoicepedagogue(TölzerKnabenchor, amongst others), Christian took interest in thephysics and physiology of the voice. After a one-year stay asvisiting researcher at the Center for Computer Research inMusic andAcoustics (CCRMA), StanfordUniversity, he decidedtoputvoicescienceathisfutureprofessionalfocus.In2012hereceived his PhD in Biophysics from the Department ofBiophysics, University of Olomouc, Czech Republic, under thesupervisionofDr. JanŠvec.Followingapositionasheadof theBioacoustics Laboratory, Department of Cognitive Biology,University Vienna, Christianwas a post-doctoral researcher atthe Voice Research Laboratory, Department of Biophysics,University of Olomouc. As of 2016 he works on the project "Comparative Biomechanics ofMammalian Sound Production", funded by an APART grant from the Austrian Academy ofSciences.HeisaneditorialboardmembertheJournalofVoiceandofLogopedics,PhoniatricsandVocology. Christianhaspublishedseveralprize-winningpaperson laryngeal configurations in singingand on electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive technique to gather physiologicalinformationoflaryngealdynamicsduringvocalization.Hehasinventedthephasegram, anewmethod to visualize chaotic phenomena in non-linear systems, and EGG wavegrams, atechniqueforvisualizingandanalyzingvocalfoldvibrationproperties.HehascreatedasetupforexcisedlarynxexperimentsattheLaboratoryofBio-Acoustics,Dept.ofCognitiveBiology,University of Vienna. The gathered data are used to perform cross-species comparisons ofphysical sound production mechanisms in mammals. In this context Christian recentlypublishedapaperaboutthelow-frequencyphysicalsoundproductionmechanismsinAfricanelephantsintheprestigiousSciencejournal.ShortBiographyChristianT.Herbst is anAustrian voice scientist. He studied voice pedagogy atMozarteumUniversity,Salzburg,Austria, andworked forseveralyearsasavoicepedagogue.Drivenbyhis interest in the physics and the physiology of voice, he enrolled in a PhDprogramme inBiophysicsattheUniversityofOlomouc,CzechRepublic,fromwhichhegraduatedin2012.Hecurrentlyworksontheproject"ComparativeBiomechanicsofMammalianSoundProduction",fundedby anAPART grant from theAustrianAcademyof Sciences.
