However, Africans have lagged behind in providing biodiversity data in comparison with European and American countries.

To support and build capacity in African countries to mobilisefoundational biodiversity information on the status, trends and

pressures on national biodiversity

Mainly focusing on three IUCN knowledge products:

• Species

• Ecosystems

• Key Biodiversity Areas

Spatial prioritisation for mainstreaming & protected area

expansion

Specific Objectives

• Identify three pilot African countries to develop the necessary capacity

needed for national red listing and KBA identification √

• Identify and engage key partners in each country through a scoping visit √

• Together with country based partners raise the required resources (Twinning Process)

• Provide extensive training of country based officials to red list species, ecosystems and identify KBAs

• Ensure the IUCN knowledge products data generated at national level are fed into land-use decision making processes √

African Analysis for Choosing Pilot Countries

Criteria:

• Mega-diversity! Biodiversity Indicators Total number of plants, birds, mammals Number of Endemics *Birds *Plant>500

• Strong institutional support including government and NGOs

• Willingness to take up the dataset that will be generated for decision making and policy implementation

Receiving Environment Analysis?• What is the Institutional capacity for managing biodiversity data (e.g.

storing and curating mobilised species occurrence records, managing spatial data generated from assessment processes etc)?

• Is there political will to mainstream biodiversity data?

• Are there champions: Biodiversity experts who are dynamic willing and able to contribute to Red Listing and KBA identification?

• Strength of BirdLife Partner.

Application of National Red List and KBAs

Biodiversity Indicators

• Informing the Convention on Biological Diversity on progress achieved towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (5, 7, 11, & 12)• by enabling the development of Red List indices, to highlight the

overall trends in the status of species and to track progress towards halting biodiversity loss.

• As an indicator of Target 11, KBAs guide countries on where to expand protected areas and conservation areas.

• Reporting on the SDGs 14 & 15, using KBAs as indicators.

Application of National Red List and KBAs

Conservation Policy

National Red Lists and KBAs are an essential tools for reporting on the state of national biodiversity• Informing the development of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans

(NBSAPs)[NBA, State of Env Report] – establishing a baseline measure of the status of biodiversity, from which the causes of biodiversity loss can be identified and conservation priorities can be established

Informing large developmental projects• Integrating biodiversity values into national and local development and

planning processes.
