Outcomes· Understand the 6 Shifts in the CCSS compared to SD state standards· Understand the difference between Bloom’s Taxonomy vs. Depth of Knowledge/Webb Leveling and why SD is using Webb

Leveling· Know and Use the SD State resources:

· Know and Use the Smarter BalancED assessment resources

Who is Bison School District?--Activity

1. Look at Wordle made from Vision and Mission Statement

2. At your table, make an ABC Graffiti Poster for the title: WHO IS BISON SCHOOL DISTRICT?

Making Connections

● Look again at the Wordle and your ABC Graffiti.

● Read the Vision/Mission statements.● As a group, write a sentence

explaining how your words support the Vision/Mission statements.

● Share with the whole group.

How does this activity support the Common Core State Standards?

CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

CCRA.SL.1 Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

CCRA.SL.4 Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Think about your knowledge of each of the above.

● Bloom’s Taxonomy vs. Webb Leveling

● Changes in Text Complexity

● Focus on Informational Texts

● Literacy Standards for all Contents

● Smarter BalancED assessment

UnderConstruction Rocky Road Yellow

Brick RoadHighway to Heaven

Think about a child, a student, a group of students in your school for whom you have high hopes and expectations.

• Where and how are they living?• What are they doing professionally?• What are they doing outside of their

work time?* How are they solving problems?

• What science, math, reading, writing skills will they need?

Think about this student in a class with a teacher, a school, a district, a principal, a system, etc. that you

work with.

Use this to think about how Common Core Instructional Shifts, Common Core Standards, Webb

Leveling, and Smarter BalancED assessments will improve his/her readiness for College and Career.

Statistics

MEMORABLE QUOTES Reflections, questions, wonderings...

Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable.---Mark Twain

It is the mark of a truly intelligent person to be moved by statistics.-----George Bernard Shaw

NAEP(National Assessment of Educational Progress) tracked overall annual rate of growth in student achievement in math, reading and science in 49 countries from 1995 to 2009.

How does the Common Core help “fix” these statistics?

Be able to analyze statistics, which can be used to support or undercut almost any argument.----Marilyn vos Savant

How do we add rigor, then needed to standards?

Webb Level Practice

Now let’s look at several standards:CCRS--R.2---Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

11-12.RST.3---Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks; analyze the specific results based on explanations in the text.

7.RP.1 - Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction 1/2/1/4 miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.

Let’s practice now with Assessment Questions:

Let’s just start with the READING standards ONLY.

Small group activity -- look @ Literacy Standards

Together, discuss:• what you notice, • what seems to be a strength

of how the CCSS's are written, and

• what seems to be a challenge to teach them.

Think about that student(s) from earlier:

If every teacher, in every state, across the nation is using these standards, how will that impact the student’s learning?

Now look at the WRITING standards ONLY.

Other Content Areas (not ELA/Math or Elementary teachers)

ELA, MATH, and Elementary Teachers

Objective: to become familar with the ELA and MATH Blueprints and Checklists

The GREAT understanding of this exercise:

Teachers ARE already teaching LITERACY, but they need to do so EXPLICITLY.

What does this mean?
