Booster Bias Supply Upgrade

January 18th, 2012

Ferrite Bias Supply Testing Four thermocouples added to MADC

Monitoring: center winding, core, input and output water temp of delta winding.

All testing done at full power (2000A) @15Hz

For the first test, the supply was run for two straight days. The final temps were: 100C on the winding, 91C on the core, input was 33C, output 41C

It was interesting to see the transformer core and winding temperatures vary directly with small fluctuations in the input water temp.

Modified water connections so both delta and wye winding have their own direct connections to supply and return. Total water flow increased about 3 GPM and is running at 16.5 GPM now. Final Temps: winding 97C, core 94C, input 34C, output 39C

A quick test to check the potential gain possible with maximum air flow. Propped the back door open and set a Supervac fan up, rated at 1/3 HP and 3200 CFM

Temperatures dropped surprisingly fast. The winding temp went from 97 to 55C, core went from 94 to 68C.

The next day I unplugged the fan for one hour to see if everything would cool down smoothly when turned back on, everything was fine. The next step is to find a fan that will work in the very limited amount of space that is available.
