Brace Map

This thinking map helps to organize relationships of physical objects. It allows you to break a physical object into its components for a deeper analysis. As you move through the process of making this map, the parts of the object become “smaller” and more specific.

To be sure if you are using this map correctly, ask yourself if you are thinking about “concrete” physical relationships of objects.

Other Examples

Following are some of the ways teachers have introduced the Brace Map to their students:

• The word "noun" was put on the left line.  We have studied six different types of nouns (compound, abstract, concrete, proper, common, collective); they were to pick four of the types.  On the far right lines, they were to give criteria for the nouns and an example.

• We used the Brace map to describe the parts of a sentence. We included the subject and verb. We then went into more detail to find the words that describe a noun and a verb.

• We chose exercises and went on to say 4 of our exercises we do and one of the they went farther and described what body parts we were working out for that particular exercise.
