Prayer | Breathe Out

I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.

Courage, wisdom, faith, the choice to love, the audacity to dream - all of the virtues I long for the most begin with the heart. And not just any heart, the best of me was born inside a heart that’s free.

All of us know what its like to be paralyzed by a heart that isn’t fully engaged. At times, we refuse to embrace life because we’re convinced that real freedom is unattainable, our hearts are held captive by this lie.

But what if your heart was set free? What if, instead of fear, possibility took residence? What if, instead of despair, hope?

I love this verse because it reminds me of the source of my freedom. My life is whole because of a God who fought to set my heart free. And so, of course, I pursue God with all my heart, because I know that’s where real freedom lives.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe your-selves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Unity and uniformity are not one and the same. As the only representatives of Jesus to a hurt and broken humanity, it’s of utmost importance that we as Christ-followers stand and live together in unity. Our love for Jesus must exceed our passion for our opinions. Our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ must supersede our distinctions and personal preferences. Our “oneness in spirit” must be practically demonstrated by giving preference to one another. Love is the superglue that bonds each of our broken lives into a united and beautiful whole in Jesus Christ.

I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten—the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm—my great army that I sent among you.You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you;never again will my people be shamed. Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.

At 52, I have many more years behind me than ahead of me. This promise moves me forward with hope. God has fulfilled this great promise to me by the very opportunity I have to serve in our Mosaic community. -Octavio M.
