A brick kiln

Bricks are made from clay soil dug from the ground.

Stones are sieved from the clay.

Clay is pressed into rectangular moulds.

Bricks are left to dry.

Then they are stacked over channels of burning charcoal and baked at high temperature in a kiln.

Brick feels 1.hard - moulded clay is baked at a very high temperature to form bricks

2. roughish and looks dull 3. dry4. easy to handle - bricks are all the same regular shape and size making them easy to carry and build

Brick takes a weight - they make a strong structure when bonded together

Brick resists 1. cold - brick keeps in heat (insulates)2.electricity - they will not carry an electrical charge 3. weather - bricks are hard-wearing and reasonably weatherproof4. fire - they will blacken but not burn.

Brick changes1. if frozen - bricks are not waterproof and will slowly absorb water - if the water freezes and therefore expands then the ice will lead to the bricks flaking and breaking up 2. if knocked - bricks are brittle and will shatter - some bricks are stronger than others depending on the sort of clay used

we must remember these facts ,to make

good houses when we grow up.

Lets find out which arrangement of bricks is the strongest!Testing brick bonds • The strengths of different types of bonds (patterns of building

the bricks) can be tested as shown below. • 1. You need some rectangular blocks, a length of guttering

propped up at one end, and a big marble. • 2.Build the blocks in a regular pattern a short distance away

from the guttering. • 3. Place (not push) the marble on the top of the guttering to

roll towards the blocks. • 4. Count how many move or fall down. • 5. Build the bricks again in a different way (another bond) in

the same spot and try again. Find the strongest way to build the bricks.
