THE LEGEND:Controlling Variables, Color and Appearance of the Map

Navigating the LegendThe Legend controls the map display.

Variable SelectorClick here to change the variable being displayed.

Variable Selector

The column on the left lists all the categories to choose from, which includes ARC’s employment estimates as well as a variety of socioeconomic data.

Variable Selector

The column on the right lists the specific variables, including total jobs and jobs by type for 2012. (We selected the “SD10_2012 Employment Estimates by Sector” table from the left side.

Appearance and Color

The wrench icon allows you to access the display settings, such as color and appearance.

THE MAP:Selecting and

Presenting Data

Map Basics

The scale bar allows you to zoom in or out.

The hand tool allows you to pan and drag the map to your desired picture.

The arrow tool allows you to select specific Superdistricts or groups of Superdistricts.

Map Basics

When moving the mouse over the map, you can see individual Superdistrict values for the variable being displayed in the legend.

Selecting on the Map

Click the arrow tool, then click and drag to highlight specific areas. Add to your selection by clicking on the “Ctrl” key while dragging the mouse. (You’ll see a little red “plus” icon) Use “Ctrl+Shift” to remove areas from your selection (a little, red “minus” icon)

Selecting on the Map

You can also click and drag on the data table to highlight specific bins. These selections will appear on the map.

Printing the Map (or entire application)

To print the screen, simply “right-click” the mouse and select “Print/Export Application Image” from the box that pops up.

THE SCATTER PLOT:Graphically Presenting

Data

Know Your Scatter PlotThe Scatter Plot is a useful representation of the data portrayed on the map.

It consists of an X- and Y- axis, with each dot representing a Superdistrict on the map.

The “line of best fit,” or slope, illustrates the relationship between the two variables. Here you can see that the two variables – education and income, are strongly correlated.

The intercept represents the value of Y when X=0.

Selecting on the Scatter Plot

Like clicking and dragging on the legend, click and drag on the scatter plot to select specific areas. Here we selected those above the “line-of-best-fit”, showing those areas that have higher-than-expected educational attainment.

Customize Your Scatter Plot

Double-click on the variable names to access the attribute selector. This will allow you to change the X- and Y-axis variables.

Customize Your Scatter Plot

Just like the Data Table, you can choose variable categories on the left column and specific variables on the right. You can change both axes from the same box.

DATA TABLE:Enhancing the Data’s

Effectiveness

Data Table

This icon at the bottom of the page is housing the Data Table. This is another useful tool for data selection, as it is essentially a “build-your-own” table.

Data Table

This table lists all 78 Superdistricts in the Atlanta region. You can select individual or multiple areas by using +Shift (to grab adjacent records) or +Ctrl (to add to your selection one-at-a-time).

Data Table

Click here (the “wrench” icon) to add more columns full of data.

Getting the Data You Want

The “Open selector…” button will allow you to access the list of variable categories to add to the table. Select the only the data you want.

Getting the Data You Want

The data table is now populated with the desired values. You can sort highest to lowest by clicking on the top headers.

ENJOY!
