It is a great pleasure to introduce the Italian Design Innovation – ADI Design Index 2012 exhibition which
is being held at the World Intellectual Property
Organization on the occasion of the 51st session of the
Assemblies of Member States of WIPO.
Italy’s people have long been admired for the everyday
creative expression that contributes to la dolce vita.
This includes a culture of excellence in design that
applies aesthetic considerations to everyday objects,
taking them from the prosaic to the sublime.
The Italian Design Innovation – ADI Design Index 2012is an annual collection of notable designs by Italian
companies compiled by the Milan-based Associazione
per il Disegno Industriale. Since 1956, ADI has brought
together design professionals, researchers, teachers,
critics and journalists to help judge entries.
ADI plays a leading role in the development of
industrial design as a cultural and economic
phenomenon, creating a relationship between
products and users through research, innovation and
engineering.
An ADI Design Index selection is an honor and, every xyear, three projects among the ADI Design Index are xchosen for the Premio Nazionale per l’Innovazione
(National Award for Innovation) that is conferred by
the President of the Italian Republic.
Winners are also entered into competition for the
Compasso d’Oro, the historic design award granted
by ADI every three years. Set up in the early 1950s by
famed Milanese designer Gio Ponti, the ADI Compasso
d’Oro has become one of the most important and
respected awards in the design fi eld. Awards are
granted by international juries to designs on items
presso la World Intellectual Property Organization in
sublime.
capo a Milano.

ranging from toys, sports gear, car interiors, furniture
and electric appliances to web sites.
This year, ADI is exhibiting at WIPO selections from the
128 products or projects chosen for inclusion in ItalianDesign Innovation – ADI Design Index 2012.
You will see design work in this exhibition that both
provokes and pleases. The projects on display range
from tea spoons to Bluetooth-enabled ski goggles to
snack vending machines to ocean-going yachts.
Also of particular note are the youthful proprietors
of 17 Targa Giovani projects – work done by younger
designers who will hopefully carry Italian design
forward for years to come.
We aim to help. Our goal here at WIPO is a more-
robust and enabling environment for future designers
around the world. Through the Hague System for the
International Registration of Industrial Designs, WIPO
offers a rapid, cost-effective route for protecting
designs against unauthorized copying and imitation in
international markets.
WIPO’s Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks,
Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications is
considering the draft of a new international treaty that
will further simplify standards for industrial design
registration procedures at a global level.
This work refl ects the growing importance of industrial
design protection in the marketplace at a time when
the role of design as a source of innovation and
economic growth is emerging. Let us all work together
to encourage this.
I thank the Italian Government, in particular the
Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations
Offi ce at Geneva, as well as the Directorate General
for the Fight against Counterfeiting, Italian Patent
and Trademark Offi ce (UIBM) for sharing with us this
remarkable exhibition. Special thanks go to ADI, as
curator of this exhibit, and for its work in promoting
design in Italy and beyond.

piacevole. I progetti esposti vanno dai cucchiaini agli
negli anni a venire.
Attraverso l’Hague
System for the International Registration of Industrial
illegale e l’imitazione sui mercati internazionali.
Lo Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks,
Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (il
promozione del design in Italia e all’estero.

Designg between
crisis and
development
Oftentimes, a crisis is seen as a phenomenon that
indicates decline. In fact, a crisis may be a sign
of decline – or it can be a change that is also an
opportunity for development. We want to believe
this: the concept of crisis as the initial phase of a
development that takes on form and substance
through innovation. Hence the title of this exhibition,
which focuses attention on what is new and stirring in
the fi eld of design.
Design is not just a beautiful shape or form conferred
upon an object produced through human intelligence.
Rather, it is form and function that are born together
during the creative process.
Therefore, form, function and conception (that
is, innovation, because without ideas there is no
innovation), represent three aspects of the same
phenomenon and the ADI Design Index 2012 is
testimony to this.
Through this venture, the Italian Government has
declared its intention to stimulate and spread
awareness that design is a cultural and artistic
phenomenon, as well as being an activity linked to the
world of industrial production. All too often, design is
viewed as a secondary activity simply connected to
the external aspect of a few products. In fact, design is
an entire universe, of which we are proud to offer you a
glimpse today thanks to the activity of ADI Association
for Industrial Design.

Il design,g
tra crisi
e sviluppo
Dunque forma, funzione e ideazione (cioè innovazione,
tre aspetti dello stesso fenomeno e l’ADI Design Index 2012,
visione riduttiva legata all’aspetto esteriore di alcuni
intero.

Ethics
and aesthetics:
a challengeg

Etica
e estetica:
una sfi da
perr l’innovazione
Every year, through its permanent Observatory, ADI (the
Association for Industrial Design) chooses the best in Italian
design. This is a complex task involving more than 100
experts divided into regional, thematic and fi nal selection
commissions. The process is aimed at identifying each year’s
fi nest design creations, which are represented in the ADI Design Index. Many of these creations are then included
in the triennial Compasso d’Oro award competition. Those
award winners become part of a continuously changing
collection that bears witness to the evolution of Italian
design from the 1950s to today.
Selecting the best in design means refl ecting on which
evaluation criteria are used to express a judgement and
design’s role in directing actual production.
A successful relationship between form and function is
now taken for granted. But there are now new criteria
also used to identify innovative expertise: environmental
sustainability; product life-cycle design; waste reduction;
societal inclusion; resource utilization and others.
An “ethical and economic sustainability” also implies
respect for intellectual property, which recognizes the work
of those involved in the process, from the designer to the
creator, through to the distributor. They contribute to the
overall quality of a product, allowing everyone involved to
expand capabilities and reinvest in new experiences.
Conversely, counterfeiting, illegal rights acquisition and the
exploitation of workers do not distribute wealth or create
culture.
processo è fi nalizzato a individuare ogni anno i migliori
Design for All, all’uso delle risorse e alla preservazione della

Design is not aimed simply at the production of goods, but
rather represents an intellectual challenge for the creation
of a better world.
And protection of intellectual property is not merely a
strategy for the legitimate defence of commercial interests,
but of an ethical principle recognizing an objective quality
on an object and a value in the commitment of the people
involved in its creation.
This is what we are trying to do through promoting better
design and its creators.
Today, the question can be asked: Does innovation even
need to lead to a new product? Or is a new process, usage,
material or formality enough in itself?
If it is the latter, it is necessary to invest in research and
people. Often the journey is long and arduous. At times it
does not bring the hoped-for result, but incessant research
will eventually lead to an intelligent, useful and winning
product – an icon that becomes recognizable to all.
From beginning to end, its value should be defended against
commercial and intellectual theft.
The historic Compasso d’Oro Collection, which consists
of 300 award-winning products, was declared a “cultural
heritage of national interest” in 2004.
This means that those who copy these products cause harm
not only for the designers and businesspeople who created
them but also to the Italian State, given that these products
are testimony to a collective identity. This may well establish
a precedent for the defence of all those products that have
been publicly recognized through a structured selection
process.
Thus, it is with great pleasure that we bring this annual
collection before an international audience. The exhibition
illustrates how design can be a continuous innovation, a
well-informed process, formal research or the victory over a
technological challenge. These products come from almost
every sector: furniture, vehicles, tools, building and other
materials, exhibitions, graphics, publishing and services in
general.
Design is a qualitative global process that allows a
humanistic approach to be integrated into production,
an approach that today is more desirable than ever before:
a task of manufacturing while paying constant attention to
the needs of the world around.
Luisa Bocchietto President ADI
all’impegno delle persone.
e i suoi autori.
conduce al prodotto vincente, intelligente, utile, all’icona
i trecento prodotti premiati (e i tremila segnalati) è stata
editoria, servizi.
ci circonda.

ADI, the Association for Industrial Design, was
founded in 1956 by a group of intellectuals, architects,
designers and entrepreneurs who defi ned a new
industrial aesthetic. In over 50 years of history, some
of the greatest names in Italian design have joined its
membership, contributing to the group’s international
success.
Today ADI has over 1,300 members. They are not
just designers, but companies, distributors, schools,
universities, historians and journalists. ADI looks
at all aspects of design: planning, production,
communication, distribution and training. It works to
spread the culture of industrial products in relation to
technological innovation, to the evolution of society and
the economy, and care for the environment.
ADI is committed to recognizing the designer’s role on a
national and international level, promoting the adoption
of regulations for individual sectors and safeguarding
intellectual property through public and private
institutions.
Since its foundation, ADI has also organized the
Compasso d’Oro award, the most prestigious award
for Italian design. In 2001, it encouraged the creation
of the ADI Foundation Compasso d’Oro Collection,
which preserves and promotes the heritage of design. It
consists of the best of Italian design from 1954 to today
in a collection that that expands every three years with
new award-winning objects.
In oltre
progetto, produzione, comunicazione, distribuzione,
formazione. Si adopera per diffondere la cultura
del prodotto industriale in rapporto all’innovazione
tecnologica, all’evoluzione della società e

ADI Designg Index:
The journey y

Compasso d’Oro
ADI Designg Index:
un percorso
verso il
Compasso d’Oro
Each year, ADI publishes a volume containing more
than 100 objects selected from among 800 potential
candidates. The publication of the ADI Design Index is
a not-to-be missed event that attracts the attention of
Italian designers and producers, since only the objects
selected can take part every three years in the Compasso
d’Oro award.
Selection takes place through a fi ltering process: the
permanent Design Observatory, a group of more than 100
experts (designers, critics and journalists) who are active
across the country.
The potential candidates are vetted by the 13 local
sections of the Observatory and therefore represent
a panoramic view of all the Italian design landscape.
Afterwards, 11 themed commissions provide a selection
according to product sectors. Finally, a Selection
Committee establishes the range of products to be
published, which can also include theoretical works on
design together with some of the best projects created
by students from Italian design schools. Selected
products stand out for their originality and functionality,
formal and typological innovation, material or production
research, or communication and distribution processes.
Every year ADI grants an ADI Design Index Award for
Innovation to three of the selected products. The
designers of these three products also receive a further
recognition of national importance: ADI recommends
them for the National Innovation Award, which is
presented every year to the winners by the President of
the Italian Republic.
Editor for the 2011-2013 editions of ADI Design Index isxMaria Cristina Tommasini.
gruppo di oltre cento esperti (designer, critici, giornalisti)
attivo in tutto il paese.
Le candidature vengono segnalate dalle 13 sezioni locali
dell’Osservatorio e rappresentano quindi un panorama
di tutto il design prodotto in Italia. Poi 11 commissioni
tematiche provvedono a una selezione per settore
merceologico.
originalità e innovazione funzionale, formale e tipologica,
Repubblica italiana.
Curatrice delle edizioni 2011-2013 di ADI Design Indexè Maria Cristina Tommasini.
