The word Westminster unquestionably brings to mind images of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall and Downing Street, names that personify the might of British political power, yet this impressive built environment is amply served by equally grand open spaces.
Throughout the area, neatly manicured green squares both public and private, are bordered by stately Georgian and Victorian terraces, but the true lungs of Westminster are undoubtedly the great Royal Parks. St James’s Park is skirted by three palaces and the stately Mall and covers a gloriously verdant 58 acres. It is full of exotic flora and fauna and the lovely, sprawling central lake is home to ducks, geese and the rather more distinguished pelicans and black swans. Green Park offers a more traditional landscape with long columns of impressive trees and wide grassy expanses to attract picnic goers and comes ablaze with colourful daffodils every spring.
