C hambers of Commerce are vital, dynamic links for any business looking to succeed and grow in today’s competitive environment. From acting as an advocate for business in-terests, to providing opportunities to network within our community, the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce is uniquely positioned to provide every business owner

with resources to help them to both survive and thrive.Simply put, the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce is in the business of serving busi-

nesses, as it has for more than 80 years.To do this effectively, the Chamber has successfully partnered with area municipalities, local legisla-

tors, area school districts, Luzerne County Community College and a number of community and busi-ness leaders to promote and sustain a healthy and vibrant business environment and community.

Each year the Chamber coordinates several community activities, including a Plant Exchange, Duck Drop, School Counts and 5K Run/Walk. On the business side, the Chamber organizes local ribbon cuttings, Chamber Salutes, the Annual Dinner, Annual Awards Dinner, Job Fair and golf tournament.

As a Chamber of Commerce in the 21st century, the Chamber is a marketplace for business net-working. The members of the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce understand the impor-tance of staying connected to their peers and colleagues, each contributing in their own way to the success of the area. Representatives of corporations, large and small businesses, our local government, Small Business Development Center, and educational institutions are united through the Chamber to protect the economic viability of our communities.

The Brush Valley Chamber has a mission to be a catalyst and advocate for economic and social growth and development while providing positive leadership throughout the region.

From establishing an energy pool with other chambers to enable businesses to purchase energy at reduced costs, to taking the forefront in trying to keep workforce develop-ment training within the region, the Chamber is always looking for ways to better serve our members.

According to Pamela Burns, chamber president and manager at First National Bank, various action committees explore every avenue and pos-sibility to enhance the quality of life for the entire region.

“From Economic Development, Business & Education, Membership, Events, and Wellness, these committees give direct benefits to each indi-vidual and business throughout the Brush Valley. As we move ahead into the new year, we have pledged to continue to effectively communicate the views of the business community and to support constructive initiatives on major issues affecting our area,” said Burns.

The Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce serves the commu-nities of Shamokin, Coal Township, Kulpmont, Mount Carmel, Paxinos, Elysburg and their surrounding areas.

At the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce we hope to build on the proud heritage and great work ethic within our Coal Region communities.

With our various committees for membership, wellness and governmental affairs, we proactively provide leadership that has helped to spearhead civil, economic, educational and social development within the Brush Valley.

For example, our Chamber, in cooperation with other area chambers, has helped to create an energy pool to enable businesses to purchase electricity at a reduced cost.

Chamber leadership has openly voiced and advocated for retaining workforce development within the region and have been actively involved in new recreation initiatives and development.

We have taken a leading role in educating the electorate about important issues throughout Brush Valley and surrounding communities.

The Shamokin Area School District (SASD) consists of the city of Shamokin and the town-ships of Coal, East Cameron and Shamokin. Of the students who graduate each year, 4.3 percent enter the military, and 72 percent go on to higher educational institutions.

The district maintains active sports programs, excellent music programs and an extensive out-door athletic complex. On state assessment tests, the district is consistently at or near the upper end in relation to other schools of the same size. SASD was ranked in the top 3 percent of school districts statewide in 2010, and U.S. News and World Report awarded Shamokin Area High School a Bronze Medal in its 2012 “Best High Schools” report. The Mount Carmel Area School District serves 1,650 students from Mount Carmel Borough, Mount Carmel Township, Kulpmont Borough, Marion Heights, Atlas and Centralia. The 154-square-mile Line Mountain School District provides students with the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. Zerbe and Herndon. Trevorton Elementary School serves kindergarten through fourth grade. Grades five through 12 attend Line Mountain Junior Senior High School.*

The Southern Columbia Area School District is comprised of Catawissa Borough and the town-ships of Catawissa, Cleveland, Franklin, Roaring Creek and Locust in Columbia County, and Ralpho Township in Northumberland County. Schools include an elementary center for grades kindergarten through four, a middle school for grades five through eight, and a high school for grades nine through 12.

Serving an area population of 10,000, the district strives to provide a quality learning envi-ronment and offers students opportunities for academic and athletic achievement. Students also have a chance to contribute to their community through service activities throughout the year.

Our Lady of Lourdes serves over 400 students from seven supporting parishes in eight sur-rounding school districts. The private parochial school offers an average class size of 15 to 20 in

grades Pre-K through 12 and a comprehensive curriculum of academic and nonacademic pro-grams to meet the needs of students at all levels. Our Lady of Lourdes offers academic and honors courses in English, foreign languages, math, sci-ence and advanced computer applications as well as fine arts, music, vocational training and athletic opportunities.

Students receive a values-based education focused on spiritual and moral growth along with academic development. Lourdes graduates have gone on to attend Harvard, MIT, Notre Dame, the University of Pennsylvania and other notable colleges and universities, as well as mili-tary academies.

Northumberland County Career and Technology Center celebrated 40 years of ser-vice to the community in 2012. The specialty school for grades nine through 12 serves over 400 students each year with programs designed to prepare them for jobs in technical, skilled and semi-skilled positions.

Students from the Line Mountain, Mt. Carmel and Shamokin area districts may enroll in train-ing programs including automotive technology and collision repair, cosmetology, culinary arts, health occupations, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, occupational childcare, protective services, and welding. Many school graduates continue their education in college, trade schools and military programs. Evening courses offered throughout the year include a variety of com-puter programs, photography, sign language, floral design, carpentry and fitness classes.

Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) serves the Northumberland County region with credit and non-credit classes at the Northumberland Regional Higher Education Center in downtown Shamokin. The college offers a variety of programs that are accessible, affordable and flexible in delivery. LCCC credits are transferable to other accredited colleges and universities nationwide.

In addition to the many academic and workforce training classes available, students have many opportunities to participate in student organizations at the Northumberland Center, including the Student Government Association and History Club as well as many community service programs. Day and evening classes are available to help students meet their educational and employment goals.

Founded in 1967, LCCC is the largest college in northeastern Pennsylvania. In addition to the Shamokin location, Luzerne has a 167-acre main campus in Nanticoke and 10 additional off-campus sites, including dedicated centers in Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Kulpmont and Berwick. Founded in 1846, Bucknell University is ranked No. 32 among national liberal arts colleges in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2013.” The university has grown to include 3,500 undergraduate and over 100 graduate students and 350 full-time faculty. Featuring more than 50 majors and 65 minors, Bucknell boasts a 10-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, and 90 percent of students graduate within four years — a rate among the highest in the United States.

Among the 100 buildings situated on the 450-acre Lewisburg campus are a performing arts center, art gallery and state-of-the-art fitness center. Bucknell has one of the largest varsity programs in the country, with 27 teams competing in the Division I Patriot League, and has won the Patriot League’s Presidents Cup, the league’s all-sports trophy, 17 of the 22 years the cup has been awarded. Founded in 1839 and known for its rich history of academic excellence, Bloomsburg University is one of 14 public institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Set on 282 acres in Columbia County, a mile south of I-80, Bloomsburg University is the largest comprehensive university in northeastern and north central Pennsylvania. Through four colleges — Education, Business, Liberal Arts, and Science and Technology — BU offers 54 undergraduate majors, 44 undergraduate minors and 20 graduate programs. The university enrolls approximately 10,000 students and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 22-to-1.

a s part of its commitment to promote quality, cost-effective care and enhance access to services through an expanded health care network, Shamokin Area Community Hospital merged with Geisinger Medical Center in January 2012. Now known as

Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital (G-SACH), the medical facility has over 360 employees providing local residents and the sur-rounding communities with superior health care.

Founded in 1912 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to offer health care to coal miners and their families, the hospital divested from the state in 1992 and has re-invested over $18 million over the last decade to expand its facilities and bring state-of-the-art equipment and enhanced services to the region.

G-SACH offers a cardiac rehabilitation center, a same-day surgery center, a women’s health center, a center for joint replacement, an occupational medicine and wellness center, and a rehabilitation services center for physi-cal and occupational therapy. Specialty clinics include cardiology, dermatol-ogy, general and vascular surgery, gynecology, gastroenterology, oncology/hematology, neurology, nephrology, and orthopedics.

The Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities was established to enhance the quality of life and encourage economic development and tourism in the region, as well as to promote the arts for all age groups through cultural and educational programs and exhibits in Northumberland County.

Featuring a diverse array of community events, art shows, museum exhibits and after-school arts programs, the Council also hosts the Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts, Downtown Christmas, the Fall Fun Festival and children’s summer theater and arts programs. Visited by over 40,000 people each year, Pioneer Tunnel is a horizontal drift mine in the anthracite coal region of eastern Pennsylvania. Experienced guides take visitors on a 35-minute tour in mine cars rebuilt to carry passengers. Also offered are rides on a narrow gauge steam train that travels 3,000 feet along the side of Mahanoy Mountain. Located off Route 54 near Elysburg and Bear Gap, this popular forest area features 9,000 acres of woodlands and reservoirs. Located in Northumberland and Union coun-ties, this state park features two scenic overlooks, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and boat-ing, fishing and water-skiing at Lake Augusta. Located a mile east of Montandon on PA Route 45, this historic octagonal schoolhouse was built in 1836 and used until 1915. Constructed of limestone from a nearby quarry, it is a one-story

This landmark church was named for the Indian occupation of the region. Founded by Presbyterians in 1769, the present brick church was built in 1835 after two prior structures burned. Warrior Run Fort Freeland Heritage Society hosts Annual Heritage Days, a huge his-torical event in early October featuring colonial foods, crafts and lectures. WhalebackShamokin

Discovered during strip-mining operations in 1948, this unusual rock formation resembles a whale. Weighing 300 tons, the anticline is believed to be more than 200 million years old. It is located southwest of Shamokin in an area man-aged by the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area.
