CURRENT INITIATIVES & ISSUES

DronesRequest for Proposals (RFP)Update on Revision of KDOT Design

Standards

CURRENT INITIATIVES – DRONES (UAS)

New Director of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Lt. Col. Bob Brock is a 22-year Air Force veteran assumed his

new role in July 2016.

Meeting with BSGS. Inspection of structures, sign trusses, and HMLT’s were

discussed. At this time the inspection on HMLT shows promise. Using infrared thermography to scan bridge decks, approach

pavements, and possibly retaining walls. To observe flooding, flood damage assessments, and to observe

stream channels where steep banks make access difficult.

Inspection: Inspection of ancillary structures. Inspect and document state

wide all sign supports structures and HMLTs. Separated into two contracts.

Vertical clearance measurements in metropolitan areas. KDOT will use internal forces to complete the rest of the state.

Rating: Two separate contracts one for Concrete and one for Steel.

Prepare both STAAD and BrDr models for complex structures that do not fit the AASHTOware current modeling capabilities. To provide Special Haul Vehicle(SHV) ratings for these structures.

CURRENT REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP)

Standards for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, 6th Edition, AASHTO 2013 Review specifications and current standards Review NCHRP 411,412,469 and design examples Complete hand calculations and update software Modify Standards, feedback received from fabricators and erectors

AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification, 7th Edition, AASHTO, 2014, with 2015 Interim Revisions Investigate Standards and Base sheets Determine if a refined analysis or modification is required to bring

all standards into compliance

KDOT has remained current on the structural design requirements, but it will require a considerable effort to verify compliance. The relative impact should be minimal.

PLAN OF ACTION: 23 CFR Part 625
