Definitions • To prevent the opposition from scoringwhile playing in or near the goal area

• A pass that is caught by an opposition player who usually gains possession for his/her team

• Man marking is a defensive strategy where defenders are assigned a specific opposition player to mark

• Zonal marking is a defensive strategy where defenders cover an area of the pitch rather than marking a specific opponent

Defending – Technical points for tackling

Task 2• In pairs, discuss and

Defending 1- Technical points for Tackling

• Side on position to opponent • Shoulders opened out • Knees bent and body weight

The Defenders Role

• When not in possession of the ball, Futsal players must take on the role of defenders

• Each player has a different defensive role depending on their start position in relation the goal, to the ball, to their team mates, opponents and the pressure being applied on the ball at the time

• Decision making – can the player intercept, spoil or delay the play ?

Performing the defensive roles

• Task 3, you have 20 minutes to work within small groups to perform a defensive task as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd defender

• Task 4, you must complete your practical assignment assessment task within your booklet for the section on defending

Marking strategies

• Marking is an organized defensive strategy which aims to prevent a member of the opposing team from taking control of the ball

• There are three strategies for marking and they differ to each other according to duties assigned to the defenders, positioning and off-the-ball style. The there strategies for marking are;– Man to man marking – Zonal marking – Combined man to man and zonal marking

Man to Man Marking• Man-to-man marking, or man

marking, is a defensive strategy where defenders are assigned a specific opposition player to mark rather than covering an area of the pitch.

• The greatest man marking performance was done by Claudio Gentile in 1982 World Cup in which his performance completely destroyed a young Diego Maradona

Defensive Lines in Futsal

NoteThe defensive lines are the for team to use in order to apply pressure in relation to where the opposition are in relation to each line.

Some teams apply pressure high up the pitch, whereas other teams apply pressure low up the pitch.

Zonal defending • Zonal marking is a

defensive strategy where defenders cover an area of the pitch rather than marking a specific opponent. If an opponent moves into the area a defender is covering, the defender marks the opponent. If the opponent leaves this area, then marking the opponent becomes the responsibility of another defender.
